RESIDENCES: A resident of Luray District #3 in 1860, Page Co., Va. He was listed as a student and within the year had graduated from Columbia University as a minister.
RECORD OF SERVICE: Enlisted 03 May 1861 in Co. B, 17th Va. Inf. at Front Royal. Transferred to the Dixie Artillery 10 Oct 1861 and enlisted at Manassas. Appointed lieutenant. Reasssigned by Special Order # 186/14 (18 Ju 1863). Transferred to Mosby's 43rd Bttn. Va. Cav. on 11 Jan 1864. Appointed captain. Paroled 22 Apr 1865 at Winchester: age 26, 5'11", fair complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes.
POSTWAR INFORMATION: S.F. Chapman went on to serve as a chaplain with the 4th Immune Regiment in the Spanish American War, continuing to minister in Virginia, and father of the public school system in Alleghany Co., Va., becoming its first superintendant of public schools. A member of Stonewall Jackson Camp, UCV, Staunton, Va. 6 Feb 1906.
