There are many books available about Tyrrell County. The Genealogical and Historical Society have published and continue to publish some great materials to assist in researching your ancestors and the heritage of our county. There are also some very nice Tyrrell County momentos that are made available at certain times promoting the county's history or festivals. I will try to keep a list of what is available in the way of Tyrrell County books, momentos, etc. on this page.

RESEARCH BOOKS AVAILABLE


The Tyrrell County Genealogical & Historical Society has the following research publications for sale:

TYRRELL COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA OBITUARIES Vol. 1 (January 23, 1959- October 17, 1964) A collection of 300 obituaries from the Walker Funeral Home files. The obituaries contain such items as the parents, siblings, and spouses of the deceased. Each obituary is also indexed by name in the back of the book. A great reference and research book.

TYRRELL TIMES An annual publication of Tyrrell County stories, folklore, poems, nostalgia, and other information for good reading is published each fall in September/October.

TYRRELL COUNTY CENSUS RECORDS Census records from 1784 thru 1830 have been transcribed and published in 1997/1998.

  • The 1840 and 1860 Census records will be published as soon as possible.

TYRRELL MOMENTOS AVAILABLE

THE TYRRELL COUNTY COVERLET
Each year, the Festival Committee plans a special commemorative momento to offer to Scuppernong Festival visitors. This year they are offering a 50"x70" 100%cotton coverlet featuring the county seal in the center and a Tyrrell scene in each corner. The corner scenes include such local sites as the courthouse and veterans park memorial along with a border of Scuppernong grapevines and grapes.

BRIDGING GENERATIONS
There are copies of the book "Bridging Generations, A Tyrrell County History also available. This is a hardbound book which includes many pictures dating from the mid 1800's, which help tell the story of Tyrrell County using its history, customs and folklore, fashions, schools, the present,and some plans for the future.

TYRRELL COUNTY XMAS ORNAMENT
To get into the Xmas Spirit you should check out the Tyrrell County collector's Christmas ornament. The Christmas ornaments are 2.5" diameter, red satin finish with the confederate monument in silver on one side and "1997 Third Edition" surrounded by a silver wreath of holly leaves on the reverse side.

THE NORTH CAROLINA COASTAL FOLKLIFE JOURNAL VOL.45 NO.1
This edition of the North Carolina Folklife Survey (Winter-Spring 1998) features a look at the local history, personalities, and ways of life of the people living in Washington, Tyrrell, Hyde, and Bertie counties of north eastern North Carolina. Representatives of the Folklife Program of the North Carolina Arts Council organized the survey and asked three fieldworkers with expertise in folklore to conduct the survey. The book documents local artists, recreations, memories, and much more. It also contains some very nice photos of area citizens and scenery.
