TAKE A WALK AROUND COLUMBIA (Find the links in the story)
The weather has been beautiful ... and that's the way I like it. I enjoy taking my 2 mile walk around the town of Columbia in the evening after work when I can. Between 6 and 7 p.m. I put the leash on our cocker spaniel (Sadie) and set off from Green Street to the boardwalk along the river. Most evenings I enjoy the moon as it shines on the Scuppernong River as I walk along the town docks. As we walk along the boardwalk, we see people fishing, relaxing, and feeding the many ducks that make their home along the waterfront. I continue my walk along the bypass to Road street and then home. I always run into someone along the way to chat with for a minute or two. It might be Braxton and Virginia Voliva out for a walk, Carlisle Harrell on his way to a meeting, or Shelton Ludford tending to his flowers. My evening walk is not only healthy and scenic, but a good time for socializing with some fine Columbia folks. Maybe you would like to take a walk around Columbia? Well, the next best thing to strolling along with me and Sadie might just be the Virtual Columbia Walking Tour. You've got a few minutes, go ahead and take a virtual walk and visit some of the historic homes that make the town of Columbia a special place.

Tyrrell County and the town of Columbia ... a place that reminds me of an era gone by. Change can be a great thing and lack of change can sometimes be even greater. I stand on Main Street in Columbia and I get the feeling that it is now as it was then ... and that's pretty darn good!

The 40th annual Reynolds family reunion was held at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church near Columbia on May 20th. There were 36 members and guests that attended the event which reunites the descendants of William Reynolds, Jr and his sister Matilda Jane Reynolds Spencer. Both were orignially from Chelsea, England and immigrated to Tyrrell County in the 1830's. William was a preacher at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church for 20 years and Maltilda Jane married Nathan Spencer and moved to Washington County where she ran a local store. The Reynolds Family Reunion is also the owner and caretaker of Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church (problably the oldest building in Tyrrell County ... built around 1840). The Reunion also collects money to mow and maintain the church yard and Paramore Cemetery on Rider's Creek. Next year the reunion will be on Sunday, May 18th. LISTEN TO A SONG WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY YOURS TRULY
These are songs that I wrote about 10-30 years ago. The first song is Hometown Homesick Blues and is about living in Columbia. The second tune is called Poor Ole Elwood and is about a local fellow named Elwood Cooper that I remember as a boy. The third tune is called Country Way Of Living and I try to describe how it feels living in rural eastern NC. The songs were recorded by Molasses Creek at Madge Vanhorn Auditorium back in May 2000 during a Pocosin Arts community talent show and are included on the cd ... Pocosin Jam. Anyway, click on the links below and give them a listen ... thanks!
