NORTHERN IRELAND WORKHOUSES |
MANY ASPECTS OF THE FAMINE CONTINUED INTO THE PRESENT CENTURY. THOSE LIVING AT SUBSISTENCE LEVEL WERE STILL VULNERABLE, EMIGRATION CONTINUED, AND IN THE 1880S AND 1890S THERE WAS CONSIDERABLE DISTRESS AND EVICTIONS WERE STILL WIDESPREAD. THE POLITICIANS WERE DETERMINED THAT THE CLEARANCES OF THE FAMINE PERIOD SHOULD NOT BE REPEATED. THEY MOUNTED EFFECTICE RESISTANCE, AND EVENTUALLY ACHIEVED THE COMPLETE REFORM OF THE LAND SYSTEM, WHEREBY THE LANDLORDS WERE BOUGHT OUT AND THE TENANTS BECAME FREEHOLDERS. THE REFORM PROVIDED GREATER HARMONY AND STABILITY IN RURAL IRELAND, AND IN THE LONG RUN CONTRIBUTED TO RAISING LIVING STANDARDS FOR MOST CLASSES. |
