My Tennessee Trip | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
My Trip to Tennessee had two purposes. One was to take my mother to visit her sister who lives in Cookville, Tennessee. The other was because I had always wanted to see where my grandfather had been raised. He was raised in Eastern Tennessee, in Carter County. If you have never been to Tennessee, it is worth the trip. It is a beautiful state. We were welcomed to the home of a cousin from our line, that showed us such great southern hospitality. They took us all over the area, and to Taylortown. We saw the graves of Andrew Taylor and Isabel McNabb. Their headstones are in very bad condition, and in a few years no one will be able to tell who is buried there. We also went to the Peoples, Hendrix and Hart cemeteries. One was high on a hill, and you needed a four wheel drive to get up there. We were taken up there by another cousin, the grandson of Governor, Alf Taylor. I was not able to find the graves of my great great grandparents, Jonathan Taylor and Barsheba Daniel. Nor was I able to find the grave of my great grandfather, James M Taylor. I did read the the will of Jonathan again, and realized that they are buried on the property that they owned at the time of their deaths. The will mentions the buriel grounds on Jonathan's land. It would make sense that Jonathan and Barsheba, and maybe other family members are buried there. Now all I have to do is find this property. If anyone knows where these people are buried, please let me know. I am working on finding this property. I have a discription. When you are standing on one of the hills and looking over the countryside, you can almost imagine how it might have been back in the 1800's. The countryside has such beautiful rolling green hills, and more trees than I have ever seen in my life. With the help of a Hart family member, we found what we think is the old home of James M Taylor and Mary A. Peoples. It is on Buffalo Creek, at the base of Buffalo Mountain, not far from Johnson City. I was also fortunate to meet some of the Peoples. who are related. My great grandmother was a Peoples. I found everyone to be so helpful and friendly. I could have used another day or two to look through the courthouse, and to try and find the property I am searching for. I plan to return next year, to look some more, and to spend more time. It was a beautiful trip, and a memory builder for sure. |

This is typical of the views in Tennessee. This is in Cookville, Tennessee, at my cousins home. Looking from their house, down toward their shop. |
