The tiny Yorkshire Terrier has an engaging personality, spirited dauntless courage, great intelligence, is very trainable, and makes an admirable watchdog with the characteristic fearlessness and tenacity of the breed.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a hardy intelligent little dog with a great zest for life and companionship. A Yorkie is equally adaptable to long tireless walks or exercise in a small space.

The most outstanding feature of the Yorkshire Terrier, distinguishing him from all other small breeds, is his long, silken coat, which requires constant grooming.  A pet owner who may not wish to have the responsibility of daily grooming can keep the coat cut to a suitable length. However, the coat still requires regular grooming and bathing, but is easy to manage.

The coat colour should be dark steel blue with gold/tan furnishings.  Puppies are born with a smooth coat which reaches full maturity usually by 4 years of age.

The Yorkshire Terrier should not weigh any more than 7 lb (3.17 Kg) but there is no height limit

There are no serious hereditary problems known in the breed in Australia.

Both the dog and bitch are equal in intelligence and companionship.  Dogs may take a little longer to housetrain, and it is advisable to have a pet bitch desexed for health reasons which your veterinarian can explain.

The Yorkshire Terrier is an active dog.  It is advisable to train a Yorkie not to jump on the furniture - jumping up is not the problem, it's getting down!  This is the time when little bones, especially in young dogs, can easily be broken and also the patella aggravated, leading to laxating (slipping) patella.
