INTRODUCTION

VANDERHOOF , VAN DER HOEVE and any other variation.

A letter written to Governor John D. Vanderhoof, State of Colorado dated 09-24-1974 from Wilson Ledley a Vanderhoof surname researcher.

Wilson Ledley noted that a "Richard" was born in New Jersey in his New Netherlands Families; New York, 1959-1960. However, in the letter written to John Vanderhoof, Ledley did not specify which Richard is this researcher’s ancestor.

Wilson Ledley never wrote any further documents after this letter was dated that we have been able to trace.  John Vanderhoof, then governor of Colorado,  turned over all inquiries into the family surname to Thomas Vanderhoof, his cousin. I research with Thomas Vanderhoof’s granddaughter, she is unsure as to why Wilson never wrote back to the then governor of Colorado regarding his letter.  We have speculated that he died while doing this research.

RICHARD VANDERHOOF SR., son of Abraham Vanderhoef and Saertje Ryke (She died before 1752) Richard is named in Abraham's will

 b. Abt 1747-1750 New Jersey  d.. Abt. 1836, Franklin, Stark, Ohio.

Richard Vanderhoof Sr. moved to Turbot Township, Northumberland Co.,Pennsylvania. Probably before 1790 three of his sons state in the US census that they were born in Pennsylvania. A Richard Vandehugg, is named living in Turbot, Northumberland is in a 1800 U.S. Census, Pennsylvania index, 169:03.  (His date of birth would be 1740-1750, according to the 1820 census lists him as over 45.  The 1830 census lists him as between 80-90 years old.)

He married twice: First wife: Sarah Thomas before 1783 and then a second time to Catharina/Katrina Young before 1788.  One ancestor of Richard Jr. wrote to me in 1997 and found a written record from her aunt who was doing research on the family in the 1960's. She believed he married Katrina Young. Then Wilson Ledley's document also states Richard (#167) married Catharina Young and moved farther out of New Jersey. Known children of 1Richard VANDERHOOF (SR):

2        Richard Jr. 08-25-1788 New Jersey

3       Henry* 1780-1790 Pennsylvania

4      William 1790-1800 Pennsylvania

 5      Abraham 1790-1800 Pennsylvania

Richard VANDERHOOF Sr. is buried in the  Himelrigh Cemetery, Franklin Township, Summit Co., Ohio which  is located on the North side of Vanderhoof Rd. (County road 215) West of the railroad tracks. It is on the Charles Himelrigh Farm. The cemetery is no longer used and is totally uncared for. There were originally from 50-60 graves; but the stones have been carried off, too old to read or impossible to find.” Summit County Chapter, OGS newsletter The Highpoint, pg. 56, August 1989 issue. Miss Gladys E Chamberlain and Mrs. Bertha Sisler copied the stone inscriptions in 1939. A total of 22 names were copied for Himelrigh Cemetery. The following is listed:

VANDERHOOF HEADSTONE

1 Richard Vanderhoof Sr., d 1836.

Mary d 03-13,1831 age 41y or 44y, wife  of Richard (Jr.)This would be Mary ZIMMERMAN.

Richard VANDERHOOF  and 14 other Vanderhoof's moved to Franklin Twp, (formerly Stark co) Summit co, OHIO.

Refer to pg. 788 FIFTY YEARS AND OVER OF AKRON AND SUMMIT COUNTY'. Ex-Sheriff Samuel A Lane. 1\17\1887.(film# 1000344)

Per the Stark County Tax Records: Richard VANDERHOOF Fam and Richard VANDERHOOF jun settled on sections 4,5, and 9 of Range 10, Twp. 2(Franklin Twp.) and first tax payment was in 1824. If he bought his land as a patent purchase, the tax was deferred for the first five years. That would mean he bought his land in 1818-1819. It appears that  both Richard's  had their own household. These farms were side by side. The original VANDERHOOF purchase totaled 408 acres of land in the Stark Co. Ohio area about 1816-1819.

HISTORY OF FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP

Franklin Township (Twp) is located just south of Akron Ohio. This township was in Stark County until 1840 when it became part of Summit County. It was comprised mostly of German farmer's from Pennsylvania. Per author Samuel A Lane. The main crops of this time were cranberries and peaches. Peach Brandy was the bi-product. Ohio land was patented to many men who fought in the war of 1812 and some revolutionary soldiers, during 1800 through 1820. By 1820, there were at least 30 families living in Franklin Township.

The area was rich in natural features: Numerous lakes, fertile soils, hardwood forests and wild animals made a excellent area for early day settlers. The Tuscarawas River, was the borderline for Franklin and the Tuscarawas Indian tribe. The Tuscarawas Indians were of the Iroquois Six Nations federation. They were also one of two tribes to side with the Americans in the Revolutionary War.

In 1840, Summit County took over jurisdiction of the township. The people of Franklin were extremely upset by the county seat changes. For years the town would ignore the new county seat of Akron, OH and still use either the original town seat of Canton, OH or go into Clinton, Wayne Co, OH to do business.

VANDERHOOF road (Ohio County road 215) is north of Franklin Township. It is a east/west road that still is used today by the local community. Franklin is still a farming community.

The headstone was reported to be in very bad shape, so the dates and the age maybe incorrect and subject to interpretation of the researcher for this record.

Mary ZIMMERMAN VANDERHOOF delivered her eleventh child, Mary in 1834. The writer of this document feels that Richard Jr.'s wife, 1aMary did die in 1834, giving birth to her youngest daughter 2Mary.      Richard remarried in 1835 to 2aMary KING.( see below)

WILLIAM VANDERHOOF

In 1850 he is 60 years old and states he was born in Pennsylvania. This indicates that WILLIAM VANDERHOOF was born about 1790 .

His wife Sarah was 65 in the 1850 federal census for the area. In the 1820 federal census, she can be identified as the (1) female 26-45 year old.  This bit of information indicates to me that 1Richard Sr. was a widower before 1820.

In 1850, William and Sarah have one(1) daughter

Mary Ann age 15. (b. Abt 1835.) This is the only known child to date.

Little else is know about this family.  Other children were on the 1820 census but never researched.

ABRAHAM  VANDERHOOF

Very little is known about him.  He was unknown as to how he fit into the family until he was named as administrator in Henry VANDERHOOF's  probate records by a Franklin Twp., Ohio area judge.  It was then determined that he was a brother to Henry.  He states he was born in Pennsylvania about 1780-1790.

b. Abt 1790-1780in Pennsylvania, d. Abt. 1841-42 Franklin Twp., Summit Co., Ohio.  He married Margaret DENNIS of Pennsylvania. She was born Abt 1805. They were probably married in Pennsylvania as no record has been found in Ohio for this couple.

1HENRY VANDERHOOF* and WILLIAM VANDERHOOF, brothers, were listed together in the 1836 Stark County tax list as co-owners of 164 acres of land. The 1840 federal census for Franklin lists the two men living next door to each other.
