Comments:
G'day, I have been trying to trace my both my maternal & paternal forebears through other lists, without a lot of luck to date, so I thought that I would try this list to see if I can do any better. My thanks to those who have tried to help me so far, especially Nan, and my apologies to those who have seen this lot before. My great great (I think that is enough greats) grandfather William Knox aged 20, (son of Alexander Knox or Jane Clegg) who left Dailly, (Ayrshire), in August 1869 and travelled to Melbourne Australia on the ss Great Britain, arriving on October 13 of that year. He was apparently accompanied by a younger relative Robert (step brother). We have filled in the gaps since they arrived here, however we have no knowledge of his family except for the fact that Alexander and Jane had 3 children - Charlotte born 9.8.1840 James born 2.11.1842 William born 18.11.1849 d 28.2.1920 in country Victoria or Southern NSW, m Elizabeth Penman 17.3.1875. As far as Robert was concerned, he seems to have been a half brother (whose child we don't know). If he was 16 when he came out, that makes his birth date around 1853. Does anyone know if there is a site on the www which deals with the Stawell Gift. My Grandfather, William Christopher Knox from Numurkah, won the gift in 1907, and while we have some information, I am interested in anything else I can find out about the race, his competitors, (Chris King came second, and won it himself the next year), or anything else I can about the period. I have been to the museum at Stawell, but their info is limited to the races. (If anyone knows the whereabouts of the bookie, who skipped town after the race, owing my family 1200 pounds, I would like to find him too!...) On my Mother's side, can anyone shed any light on: Richard WALLIS m Rose ?? Son – Richard WALLIS - (11) m Mary COOPER Son – William WALLIS – (of Halsted Essex) b 22.1.1788 – d 7. 10. 1836 m 17.11.1811 – Esther SANDFORD Sons – Richard Thomas WALLIS ( see below) & William Shepherd WALLIS b 25.10.1812 , d 28.1. 1892 m Ann Byles LANKESTER (nee VERTUE) 1.8.1839. Or Daniel BURTON – Born 5.3.1759 - Son of Robert and Johana BURTON of Hatfield Heath, Essex m Sarah ?? – son Robert b 23.6.1784. Robert BURTON m Ann ?? – Daughter - Catherine BURTON b 28.5.1820 m Richard Thomas WALLIS – (b 23.11.1819, d 5.4.1868 ) on 23.11.1848 They migrated to Geelong, Port Phillip in 1852 Once again we have a complete history of the family since they arrived in Australia, (including the fact that my ggg W.S.ROUND invented, or at least patented a flat chain which was used in mines around Ballarat in the late 19th century - more info would be welcome), however we know very little about them in England, with the exception that we believe that Richard Thomas WALLIS was a vet in Halstead. If anyone can shed some light on any of the above, I would appreciate it. Thank you, Chris Knox.

Bush - 04/29/99 02:41:26
My Email:adi@adi.org

Comments:
Bush Query I am trying to determine the parentage of Phoebe Bush Reynolds who married Joseph Reynolds in Hart County, Kentucky in 1829. I have the following clues and would appreciate anyone's suggestions: Joseph and Phoebe Bush Reynolds named their first daughter Lydia Bridwell Reynolds and there first son William Tandy Reynolds. Lydia was the name of Joseph's sister, and William was the name of his brother, so it is possible that the names came from that side of the family. But Bridwell and Tandy, the middle names, may provide the link to the right Bush family. William (Captain Billy) was born in June 26, 1746 in Orange County, Virginia and died in 1815 in Clark County, Kentucky. He married Frances Tandy Burris (b. 1762 d. 1828) on December 9, 1778 in Orange County, William and Francis were married in 1778, and they had nine children: 1.William Tandy b. 1787 in Clark County, KY d. 1846 (or 1835) in Sangamon County, Illinois; m. Sarah Mathews on May 23, 1806 in Barren County, Kentucky. 2.Willis Allen b. 1797 d. 1856 m. Malinda Robinson Welsh in 1821 3.Elcana b. 1783 d. 1847 m. 1st Polly Sweeney in 1809; Elcana m. 2nd Mary Polly Stone in 1827 4.Cynthia b. 1790 d. 1870 m. 1st Thomas T. Bush in 1809; Cynthia m. 2nd Zachariah Elkin in 1833 5.Frances Tandy b. 1781 d. 1841 m. George Giddings in 1802 6.Luana (Suana?) b. 1792 d. ?? m. Christopher Morrow in 1816 7.Polly b. 1794 d. ?? m. 1st Richard Stittes m. 2nd Ben Hieronymous 8.Jane b. 1800 d. 1852 m. Pleasant Bush in 1816 9.Thomas Jefferson b. 1801 d. 1823 never married Phoebe Bush Reynolds was married in 1829, so we might assume she was born about 1810. She could have been the daughter of William Tandy and Sarah Mathews Bush, although their only child of record was E. B. Bush, born in 1809 in Barren County, Kentucky. [Hart County, where Phoebe was married, was carved from Barren County in 1819.] This would have been the right time and place to be Phoebe's family, but we have no proof. Here is another possibility. Thomas Bush married Liddy Breadwell in Orange County, Virginia on March 22, 1802. Thomas Bush died in the 1820s in Hart County, Kentucky, where Phoebe Bush later married Joseph Reynolds. Dorcas Bush was the daughter of Thomas and Lydia Bush. She was born in old Barren County in 1805 and died in Hart County on November 14, 1853. She married George Waggoner and they named a daughter Phoebe, born in 1845 (the year our Phoebe died). Who was this Thomas Bush? How was he related to William Bush? And then there are the German Bushes. Hannah Bush was born in 1777, maybe in Virginia, the daughter of Christopher Bush and Hannah Davis. She married Ichabod Radley in 1794 in Hardin County, Kentucky (where Joseph and Phoebe lived at one time). Ichabod Radley was the son of Ichabod Radley and Phoebe Broadwell. The Radley-Bush children were born in Hardin County, KY, and most married and/or died in Coles County, IL between 1837 and 1858. Note the name Phoebe Broadwell. Note also that Joseph and his s cond wife, Lydia Burton, spent a winter in Coles County in 1854. Thus, we have a third possibility; that Phoebe was a daughter of one of Hannah's brothers.
