Christmas is my
favorite holiday! Not just for the gift giving,
goodies, or the decorating, but I truly love the
feeling I get around Christmas time. The feeling
of joy and love and happiness just fills me up
inside.
On this page you
can find the history and some facts about
Christmas and what it really means. Some of us
seem to forget the reason Christmas is
celebrated, and that it has nothing at all to do
with what you receive or what you give....it's
the love inside you share that really
matters......
Christmas is the
celebration of the birth of Christ (also known as
the Nativity). Scholars believe that Christmas is
derived from rites held by pre-Christians to
celebrate the Winter Solstice. Christians have
observed Christmas since the 4th century and it
is believed that this is where pagan customs such
as mistletoe, holly, and the Yule log came from.
Christmas carols
were banned in England around 1650 by Oliver
Cromwell because he thought Christmas should be a
solemn day. Silent
Night was
written in 1818 by Joseph Mohr, but the first
American Christmas carol called Jesus Is Born was written by
John de Brebeur in 1649. Bing Crosby's White Christmas is the biggest
selling single of all time.
The use of the
first Christmas tree began in France in the early
17th century. In 1856 President Franklin Pierce
decorated the first White House Christmas tree
and in 1924 the first living national Christmas
tree was planted in Washington D.C. Every year
since then the President ceremonially turn on
it's lights.
