CREEK INDIAN LETTERS TALKS AND TREATIES 1705 - 1839 COMPILED, COPIED AND BOUND WITH AUTHORITY OF JOHN B. WILSON, SECRETARY OF STATE UNDER DIRECTION OF MRS. J. E. HAYS, STATE HISTORIAN 1939. ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPTS IN DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES & HISTORY OF GEORGIA. W.P.A. PROJECT O P. 665-34-3-224. P. 244 Greensborough 14th April 1792

Abt the same time Brigade orders were handed to Me, a Letter from Captain Alexr. Reid was put into My hands informing Me that on 11th Inst. a Mr. JAMES YARBROUGH & his Son were killed by the Indians upon Cedar Creek about two miles above the big Shoals of the Oconee. Capt. Reid adds that at the same time the account of the Murder reached his house, he was from home but that it is Certain the Murder was Committed, that the Indians were Tracked Some distance from the place, That from the Tracks the pursuers Supposed There were no more than three of them; that from the appearance of the deceased they (the pursuers) were of the opinion the Indians rushed on them & tomahawked them, for no other wounds were to be Seen nor were their Scalps taken. [This was signed y Henry Karr Col. Green County, Ga. to Elijah Clark.] p. 246 Rock Landing 28th Apl. 1792 From the current reports here there can be no doubt of the death of JAMES YARBROUGH and his Son -- but as retaliation was expected by the frontier people for the Indian killed last year, it has not caused the usual alarm among the Settlers and I have heard of none breaking as yet... Greensborough 16th June 1792 ...I lately observed in one of Mr. Smith's publications that it has been said the two YARBROUGH's were killed by white people and by some others that they were killed by lightning - but it has been sufficiently proved by several people they were Killed with hatchets and one of their heads cut almost off... [H. Karr colo. G. C.] p. 264 ...If we may tract their Barbarity we will find them early begun after the Treaty with the murder of Mr. Rory's son in Green County near the Rock Landing and Since with the murder of Mr. YARBROUGH & Son near the Scull Shoals on the Oconie in May last...[Saml Alexander]

Robert Patton Killed
Wednesday night at Blanton's Mill about twelve miles from here Robert Patton was shot and instantly killed by Forest McNorton. Patton is about 25 years of age and a good farmer. McNorton is from Indiana and is not well known in this section. Robert Patton and his brother Tom were fishing at the mill crossing it is said, Robert being on one side of the stream and Tom on the other. McNorton and Lum Cannady who had been to Brooks Station came by about midnight in a buggy, saw young Patton standing in the bushes in a few feet of the bridge and McNorton asked who it was. Patton made no reply. McNorton drew his pistol and told him he would make him talk, opened fire and the ball took effect just below the heart, death resulting instantly. The men in the buggy drove across the bridge and went on a mile further when Cannady went back to see if Patton had been hurt. Tom Patton it appears was not aware that his brother has been killed and this discovery was made some forty minutes after the tragedy was enacted. Many are of the opinion that the deed was perpetrated with out any provocation and much indignation is expressed.
