Frontosa

Geographic origin: Lake Tanganyika
Size: Males up to 14 inches Females up to 10 inches
Sexual differences: Practically impossible to detect in juveniles, adult male have a much bigger bulge on the forehead than female.
Behavior: Quiet fish, mouthbrooder with the female doing the brooding, non-pair forming.
Care: In spite of it's size, this cichlid can be kept in tanks of 50 inches. Provide a sandy bottom and rock structures that form caves. Plants usually are uprooted. Strong filtration recommended.
Water: 24-27degree C, PH 7-8
Feeding: this species eats fish, attacking sleeping fish in the semidarkness. Needs nutritious food. Frozen food such as shrimp, blood worms & beef heart, it also will happily consume food tablets in great quantities.
Breeding: These fish don't spawn until they are 1 1/2 to 2 years old.
2 Baby Whales

Known locally as 'dolphin fish', this newly discovered fish is extremely rare. The head and body colour is exactly like the sea mammal, the true dolphin. This active fish has no info available on its habits yet as it is so new in the market. It is believed to be found in the Amazon river region.

Baby Whales are from the family Mormyridae, and are obviously not related to true Whales. They like to school in "pods", but the tank must be large or they will be bothered by each other's electrical impulses. The body fish is similar to the closely-related Elephantnose, but lacks the long snout. The body is dark, glossy and elongated, with far set back dorsal and anal fins. The head is blunt and rounded.

Tank Setup : Baby Whales are nocturnal and like to hide out during the day. PVC pipes or a similar cave-like structure is appreciated by the fish as a hiding place. A sandy substrate with rocks and wood are helpful to keep the Baby Whale calm in the aquarium.

Feeding : Baby Whales are carnivorous fish and need a supply of live foods. Earthworms are a favorite, and chopped beef heart is usually accepted. Sinking foods are appreciated.

Water Chemistry : Baby Whales need a very efficient filtration system in order to keep the water clean enough for them to thrive. A pH value between 6.5-7.5 and a temperature between 73-79 degrees F will suffice.

Breeding : Breeding is close to impossible in captivity. With a large enough aquarium and a whole lot of luck, a pair will form and make a nest in a dark corner of the tank. Provide plants and vegetation, as this is what the parents construct the nest out of.

3 blackghost.jpg (17027 bytes) Black Ghost Knife

The Black Ghost Knife is a large fish that has the ability to release a
slight electrical current that it uses to navigate. It's eyesight is almost
nonexistent, so it relies on it's electric navigation. This "electricity" is
barely detectable to other fish, and so cannot stun you. They are nocturnal,
so expect to see them laying on their side during the day, but this is just
sleep, and they will come out as soon as the lights go out or food detected.

Tank Setup : The Black Ghost Knife can become hand tame, which makes it even more of a delight to an aquarium, but there should only be one per tank. Tankmates should not include any fin-nippers or large Cichlids. They should be provided with a heavily planted tank with plenty of rocky retreats and driftwood shelters.

Feeding : Black Ghost Knifefish must be fed a varied diet. This may include live foods, beefheart, shrimp pellets, snails, small fish and worms. Tubifex and Bloodworms are said to be a favorite. These fish are big eaters. If they are not properly nourished, they may hunt other fish in the tank. As always,
live foods are beneficial. Black Ghosts are very quick at detecting the
smell of food. Even when there are just a few pieces and the other fish have gotten to them, you can expect your Knifefish to be out immediately,
zig-zagging and looking for it.

Water Chemistry :The water should be slightly soft with a pH of around 6.5-7.0 and a general temperature range from 72-80 degrees F.

Breeding : The black ghost knife fish is being bred successfully in Brisbane Queensland Australia.
