Open Letter To All Mormons

Dear Friend

This letter will question the foundations of your faith. It will examine the claim of the LDS Church to be the restored faith brought by two men Joseph Smith and Brigham Young who the LDS Church claims are Prophets of God.

Since many Christians claim that Mormons are cultist and Joseph Smith was honest about the enmity between Mormonism and Christianity: In his reported first vision he recorded that the angel told him "all Christian Churches were an abomination in God’s sight and that all there members were corrupt and they approach God with their lips but their hearts are far from me". Can we agree that the two faiths are antithetical beliefs and at least one side is wrong. Since all eternity rest on being correct on this issue, I will be blunt.

Years ago I heard many claims about the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" or Mormons. Everything from the idea that they were the true church; or just another denomination inside the church; to claims that their doctrines were Satanic. My brothers and I endeavored to find out for ourselves which view was true. We each read 1 of the holy books, (Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price & Doctrines and Covenants). I have subsequently read parts of "The Journal Of Discourses" and "The History Of The Church" and several other Mormon books as research for dialogues with missionaries at my door.

The Test Of A Prophet

How can we test what a man who claims to be a prophet says or his claim to the office itself? Thankfully the Bible has anticipated this dilemma and provided us with both a caution against false prophets and a test for anyone claiming the office.

Galations 1:6-9 "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that trouble you and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, then let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed".

Dueteronomy 13:1-4 "If there rise among you a prophet, or dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, and that sign or wonder come to pass whereof he spake unto thee, saying Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; thou shalt not harken unto the words of that prophet, or dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you , to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him."

The idea that Mormonism is the true Christian Church, as claimed by Joseph Smith is predicated on the belief that J. S. was a prophet. To meet the test of prophet as described in the Bible he must be 100% accurate; agree with prior revelation; and not teach you to follow after other gods. Let’s examine his record for if it fails then the entire claim of Mormonism is invalid. (J of D vol.21 page 165) "…if the angel of God has not appeared to Joseph Smith, and these things are not true of which we speak, then the whole thing is an imposture…"

Must be 100% accurate

Joseph Smith, The Civil War & The Second Coming

(D&C 130:12-15) "I prophecy, in the name of the Lord God that the commencement of difficulties which will cause much bloodshed previous to the coming of the Son of Man will be in South Carolina. It may probably arise through the slave question. This a voice declared to me, while I was praying earnestly on the subject, December 25th, 1832. I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following: Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty five years old, thou shall see the face of the Son of Man"

(D&C 112:15) Exalt not yourselves; rebel not against my servant Joseph; for verily I say unto you, I am with him, and my hand shall be over him; and the keys which I have given unto him, and also to youward, shall not be taken from him until I come.

(HOTC pg. 182) "President Smith then stated that the meeting was called because God commanded it; and it was made known to him by a vision…..and go forth to prune the vineyard for one last time, for the coming of the Lord which was nigh- even fifty six years should wind up the scene

(HOTC pg. 336) "…After two days, etc. -2520 years; which brings us to 1890. The coming of the Son of Man never will be-never can be till the judgments spoken of for this hour are poured out; which judgments are commenced…."

(HOTC pg. 315, 316) " And now I am prepared to say by the authority of Jesus Christ, that not many years shall pass away before the United States shall present such a scene of bloodshed as not paralleled in history of our nation; pestilence, hail, famine, and earthquake will sweep the wicked of this generation from off the face of this land, to open and prepare the way for the return of the lost tribes of Israel from the north country….Repent ye, repent ye and embrace the everlasting covenant, and flee to Zion, before the overflowing scourge overtakes you, for there are those now living upon the earth whose eyes shall not be closed in death until they see all these things, which I have spoken fulfilled…."

After reading these passages I ask you; When did J.S. predict the second coming to occur? What war would lead to the gathering of the lost tribes? Where did J.S. say that the lost tribes lived? Who would still be alive at the culmination of history? If the Civil War which started in 1861 was not the equivalent to Armageddon in J.S. prophecy, which war that concluded prior to 1890 qualifies? Did Jesus return prior to J.S. death or 1891? J.S. did qualify some of the statements saying he was not sure that the second coming would be before 1891 or if he would die and see the Lord on the other side before 1891 but the teaching is clear that the second coming would be before all of those then living had died. Over 100 years have transpired and all of these prophecies have failed.

The Lost Tribes

In (D&C 133:26-30) J.S. predicts that the lost 10 tribes of Israel live in the uttermost north are possess much wealth. Both statements are false!

J.S. & B.Y Men On The Sun & Moon

(The Young Woman’s Journal "Our Sunday Chapter" pg. 263) "…to prove Joseph Smith to be a Prophet. As far back as 1837, I know that he said the moon was inhabited by men and women the same as the earth, and that they lived to greater age than we do-that they lived generally to near the age of 1,000 years…"

Brigham Young (The Journal Of Discourses Vol. 13 page #271) "…Who can tell us of the inhabitants of the little planet that shines in the evening, called the moon? When we view it’s face we may see what is termed ‘the man in the moon’ and what some philosophers declare is the shadows of mountains. But these sayings are very vague and amount to nothing; and when you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant of their fellows. So it is with regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think there is any life there? No question of it; it was not made in vain…"

Again I put my question to you. Did J.S. and B.Y. falsely teach that people lived on the Sun and Moon? If the modern Mormon Church wants to reject these teachings logic requires that they reject the teachers because the teachers claimed to be Prophets of God. The standard for a Prophet is higher than the standard for someone who is making their own best guess. A Prophet must be 100% accurate or Scripture says he is a false prophet.

Must agree with prior revelation.

Can not teach you to follow other gods

(The Journal Of Discourses Vol. #1 pages 50 & 51) "…Adam is our father and our God and the only God with whom we have to do…."

"…When the virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus the Father had begotten Him in His own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. And who was the father? He was the first of the human family…" (Adam was the first of the human family)

(JOD Vol. #8 pg. 115) The birth of our Savior was as natural as are the births of our children; IT WAS THE RESULT OF A NATURAL ACTION. He partook of flesh and blood, WAS BEGOTTEN OF HIS Father AS WE WERE OF OUR FATHERS"

From these passages we can see that B.Y. says that Mary was a virgin until conception was achieved by Adam. Does Adam need a physical body to produce physical offspring according to Mormon theology?

(Gospel Principles Page 30f.) "When Adam and Eve were placed in the garden they were not yet mortal. They were not able to have children…"

Did B.Y. teach that Adam was God? How else can the statement be understood? He defended his teaching in the Desert News and claimed they were a result of divine revelation. He is quoted by other Mormons as having taught this doctrine. The standard Mormon defense is that "miracles are natural acts". This defense is clearly not valid in this context. The author is equating the act that resulted in the conception of Jesus with the act that resulted in his and his father's conception. The act of being begotten. One can deny the validity of this doctrine but the denial that B.Y. taught it, is unfounded

I just showed why I consider the founding prophets, of the Mormon Church to be false prophets. They taught about different gods who evolved from the level of man and still have physical bodies. They taught about a different Jesus who is the son of Adam conceived through a sexual act between Adam and Mary. They taught of a different nature of salvation where men evolve into gods and populate their own planets with their celestial wives. They made false predictions concerning men on the Sun and Moon; the Lost Tribes on the North Pole and numerous others that I did not include here. On virtually every essential doctrine the Mormon and Christian churches are at extreme variance.

The Christian Church is comprised of many Denominations who disagree in many areas of the faith but on the essential doctrines unity is required. If you are wrong about the nature of God, Jesus, Salvation, The Atonement and The Virgin Birth then your error excludes you from the Church. Even Joseph Smith agreed with the need for correctness in these areas but in each case the Mormon Church teaching are at variance with the Scripture and the Christian Church.

Biblical Warning

(Matthew 7:15)"Beware of false prophets that come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." (2 Peter 2:1) "…there will also be false teachers among you who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who brought them…" (1 John 4:1-) "Beloved, do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out in the world."

I have tried to present the evidence that led me to conclude that Joseph Smith and Brigham Young failed the tests of a Prophet given in Scripture without insulting your faith. I hope I was successful in that endeavor. According to both Christian and Mormon Theology the differences that divide our religions are sufficient to leave the one who is in error in a state of damnable error. Due to the consequences I have been fairly blunt in my assessment but send this information in the spirit of friendship. I can not and will not try to convert you to Orthodox Christianity. Your eternal state is between you and God. I have presented a small portion of the evidence that convinced me of their failure as Prophets and I hope you will look these references up yourself. If you find that either J.S. or B.Y. made ONE false prophecy, teach about other gods or contradict prior revelation, then they fail the test. There are hundreds to choose from. You must make up your own mind if belonging to a church founded by men that are demonstrably false prophets makes sense for you.

I will not pressure you with my faith or instigate another conversation on the subject unless you request that we continue. I open myself to you to answer any question that I can, if you desire to discuss this or any other matter further. I hope your search is fruitful.
