OUR JOHNSON FAMILY

Not many records have been located on our Johnson family. No doubt there are many hours of research still to be done.  I will enter what I know about our family in hopes someone else can make a connection and help with more details untill that research is completed.

CHARLES JOHNSON AND BELLE HILL

No dates or much other information is known except what info their grandson, Charles Rollin Johnson related to me in 1986, as follows:

".... Charles & Belle Johnson were both born in Germany and came to the United States as kids.  They met and married in Texas. I think around Brownsville.  Grandmother could barely speak English."

"...My Dad's parents (Charles & Belle) came to the United States from Germany.  Belle was Swedish.  Grandfather Johnson was a fiddle player and played for dances all over Texas.  One night when my Dad was about a year old, there was a fight in the place Grandfather was playing.  Someone fired a gun, hitting and killing Grandfather Johnson.  Grandmother Johnson later remarried a man named Kaler (Kaylor; Caler; Caylor (correct spelling unknown).  She later had 3 sons and one daughter which were my dad's step brothers and step sister. "

A request to the County Clerk of Cameron County, Texas reveals no marriage license for Charles & Belle between 1848 & 1948. However, Brownsville may have been an incorrect town for their residence.  More research continues.  Death records of Cameron County and also Gillespie County did not began until 1903. Therefore no record of Charles death has been located.

From the story by Charles Rollin Johnson, we will assume Charles (#1) died about 1874/75 as his son Charles was born in 1873 in Gillespie County, Texas.

From information taken from some old family pictures we find that Belle Hill Johnson married (2) John Henry Caylor.  At present I have no date for their marriage or the date of the birth of their children.  I believe their children to be:

Addie Rebecca Caylor - married ____Lewis. At least 3 children was born from this union. (1) Georgia Nannie; (2) Betty and (3) Tommy. The last 2 being twins.

     Georgie Caylor - no information

     Tom Caylor - no information

Joseph "Joe" Caylor - no information

William Robert "Bob" Caylor - Thought to be buried at Demming, New Mexico.  From Charles Rollin Johnson - "The pocket watch Dad owned was given to him by Uncle Bob Caylor who worked for the railroad.  Clarence had Chas Johnson engraved on it."
The watch in possession of King Johnson at this time.

Stories of CHARLES ROLLIN JOHNSON as told by him in November 1986 at his home in Bisbee,Az.

".....I went to work for the Diamond A. Cattle Company when I was 10 years old.  When I was 11 and Clarence (Brother) was 16 we were in a line shack.  Clarence was washing dishes. We both liked to shoot and I looked up and Clarence had stuck his gum on a nail above the sink where we usually hung the pans.  Well, I pulled my 45 and shot the nail and drove it clear into the wall.  Clarence didn't say anything.  He just finished the dishes, turned around and grabbed me, threw me to the floor, took my gum from my mouth, got up and put it on another nail and drew his 45 and shot it."

".....Once we lived in a big old house that had several bedrooms. In order to keep the place warm Mother closed off some of the rooms.  Well, we kept hearing something in one of the closed off rooms.  One night before we went to bed we kept hearing the noise so Clarence and I went outside and boarded up a window that was broken out and made sure whatever it was couldn't get out.  The next morning bright and early we went into the room and found a hugh cat.  Only one thing to do.  We drew our 45's and shot that cat.  Course we had filled the entire room with bullets before we finally killed it."

"....Clarence played the fiddle and I played the guitar.  We sure made some pretty music every now and then."

"....It wasn't easy growing up but I've always said, "I never missed any meals but I did postpone several.""

"Poncho Villa's army got in a fight with the Mexican soldiers at Agua Prieta, Mexico.  Mayself and Earl (?) climbed on the corral fence so we could see better.  Dad had taken me to buy some new shoes.  I turned and saw Dad peeking out from behind the buildings. Bullets from the fight was buzzing around our heads. Poncho Villa's men would single out a soldier almost like separating a calf from the herd and then shoot him.  Earl got excited and let out a yelp and some of the army men looked our way.  Thats when we left the fence fast."

" Once Poncho Villa was reported to have raided Columbus, New Mexico.  Mother, Clarence and I were alone and she was scared that Poncho Villa would come by our place and kill us.  That night she took us out to the corn field next to the house and we slept there.  In the night we heard the army come by.  Dad was trailing them we found out the next morning when he stopped at the house."

"I did attend some school.  I was working for the Diamond A Cattle Company so before and after school I fed 150 bulls. I rode seven miles to school and back.  One time Clarence tied me to a steer and it almost killed me before I got loose."
