Meet Garland A. Baker, a young man in the middle thirties, a Beagler and a true and good Sportsman, and his beagles. Let's say a few words about Garland before his hounds are mentioned.

Garland served as President of the Oklahoma Beagle Club Inc., and at present is on the executive board and now ram-rodding the first licensed beagle specialty show of the club which will be held at Edmond, Oklahoma, on November 5, 1955.

The Oklahoma Beagle Club is looking forward to Seventy-five to One Hundred entries. This event will be the first Beagle Specialty show in the State of Oklahoma. And why shouldn't it be? The Oklahoma Beagle Club is always first. First Licensed, Field Trial, the first women President of a Beagle Club and now the first Licensed Show.

Garland is to be given a lot of credit for this as he is the proud owner of Gar-Lane Kennels headed by that great show champion, Thornridge Admiral who has the credit of siring nine (9) champions.

Two of his recent get are Ch. Gar-Lane Candi owned by Mrs. Floyd Alcorn, was shown to her championship by her breeder Garland A. Baker. This 13" bitch is the 5th Champion sired by Ch. Thornridge Admiral x Ch. Opus Crescendo. She finished her Championship at the Missouri Valley Kennel Club show under Mr. John Banks, Judge Dr. Rex. B. Foster of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Two days later the 6th Champion a litter mate finished his Championship at Grand Junction, Colo. This was Ch. Gar-Lane Cavalier a 15" hound and was shown by Mr. Baker.

Garland knows beagles, bench as well as Field hounds. He has judged at club field trials and there never was a complaint on his decisions. He knows a running hound as well as a show hound and is an excellent handler in the show ring. His main ambition is to breed that Dual Champion.

Garland is a Beagler that helps his fellow Beagler, for instance at a Bar B Q held by the club on the 9th of July. He gave a talk on the show beagle and what the standard beagle should look like, winding up the program by grooming Al Lininger's show bitch Gar-Lane Kiss me Kate, giving a complete and comprehensive demonstration of showing the beagle.

If you note the pictures of the two champions that finished, Garland is showing both of them; one he finished and the other he carried to nine points and was finished by somebody else. Although Garland is not a professional he is hard to beat, will handle a hound for his friends anytime whether his own breeding or not. Always fight for the beagle and help others to breed better beagles. His motto is: "`If You Don't Breed a Better Beagle, Somebody Else Will." Always looking for that out-standing hound to better the breed and if a litter does not meet his standards they are destroyed.

The two hounds pictured is a demonstration of what can be accomplished by careful selection in breeding and should be followed by more. Then there would be less puppy factories.
