On May 5th, 2001, the Luray Chapter 436, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Summers-Koontz Camp 490, Sons of Confederate Veterans held the first ever Illumination to honor Page County's Confederate soldiers who died during the War Between the States. The ceremony began at 7 p.m. and was held at the Confederate Monument across from the Luray Post Office in Luray, Virginia. Over 40 descendants participated in the Illumination, some from as far away as Richmond & Hampton Virginia. Mrs. David S.Whitacre, President of the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and 4th Brigade Commander, Mr. John R. Lumsden of the Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans brought greetings from the Virginia daughters and sons.
