James moved to London with his mother after his father's death, where she married an Officer of the English Army. They went to Dublin, Ireland and then to India. James joined a ship and went to sea. Later he was in command of a ship and engaged in trade between Europe and the Islands of the Pacific. After that, he owned his own ship which was wrecked on the Pacific Coast about 1840-1850.
