South Africa Pohl's Coat of Arms
Overview
POHL Abbreviated History and Family Tree
Due to the passage of time as well as the destruction of
documentation in the wars of old, very few facts could so far be
obtained in regard to the early European history of the
POHL family. There may however
be, through the respective family coat of arms, a connection
with a family by the name of von Polentz (Polenz, Polenzk, Polenski.) who lived in the eastern German regions along the Polish border during the fifteenth century. Investigation has
revealed that members of this family accompanied Duke
Bogislaw of Pomerania on an expedition to the holy land and following this, a coat of arms, which can be connected
to that episode, was adopted by them. Principal features
of the coat of arms are the blue ostrich plumes from the Duke's, the silver star of Jerusalem and a golden ship's bell.
The South African Pohls are in possession of a similar coat
of arms which may have been brought here by their ancestor Carl Friedrich Pohl (1768-1844). A connection between the families is therefore a possibillty and it is also suspected that the name Pohlentz gradually became Germanised through time to become Pohlentz and later, simply Pohl.
Carl Friedrich Pohl's father, Ephraim Pohl(1735-1815) married to Sophie Judith Dopecke (died 1806) and as his grandfather, Bonaventura Pohl(1700-1757) married in 1728 to Barbara Rindfleisch(1701-1785), were both esteemed merchants and
master-weavers from the town of Schivelbein in
Pomerania, Prussia.(Currently Swidwin in Polland.)
It is from this town that Carl in 1787 departed on a adventure into the unknown, never to return and tradition has it that his destination was not the Cape of Good Hope, but that at some stage on his journeys he fell ill while at sea and had to go ashore at Cape Town in 1793.
While recovering there he met and fell in love with a girl by the name of Hester Isabella Marx(1779-1861), who
was the daughter of a well-known Cape burgher. He stayed on and they were later married in the town of Swellendam in 1799. They had ten children.
