Sgt URIE Australian Army WW 1

Archibald Urie was born in Glasgow on the 8th February 1884 he was the 5th child born to Archibald Urie and Elizabeth Armstrong and had 2 brothers & 2 sisters.

He became a merchant seaman and travelled the world.

While in Australia he joined the Australian Army on the 15th January 1915 at an age of  nearly 33.

He joined the 5th reinforcements, 14th Battalion on March 23rd 1915.

       He was court martialed for striking a superior officer and using threatening language to a superior officer on 16th June 1915. He plead guilty and got 79 days detention, which the confirming officer remitted to 23 days. He lost a total of 66 days pay.

  He rejoined the M.E.F 9th Sept 1915 and rejoined his unit at Gallipoli 8th November 1915.

    He was promoted to Cpl 1st December 1915.

   On New years day he disembarked at EX MUDROS per Cardinghanshire at Alexandra.

   Six months later he proceeded to join B.E.F. from Alexandria and disembarked at  Marseilles 7 days later on 8th June 1916.

 One month later he was promoted to Sgt July 1916 seven months after promotion to Cpl.

    He was wounded at Mouquet Farm Poziers and sent to England for treatment at the City of London War hospital Epsom.

   Sgt Archibald Urie was awarded the DCM in November 1916 for action at Bois Grenier and Poziers.

    Five months after being awarded the DCM Sgt Archibald Urie was reported missing in action and later the same day was reported Killed in action
