High cortisol levels may lead to hypertension, edema (swelling due to fluid accumulation in the tissue), and vascular fragility. Whole body edema may occur, but most commonly in the legs and feet. Minor injuries may result in significant bruising. Blood pressure may be very out of control, requiring multiple medications to control it. All this contributes to the development of cardiovasular disease, possibly even heart attacks and strokes if left untreated.
