Sir David Lindsay contructed the garden in 1604. He patterned it after the great gardens of Europe, popular at that time. The garden is surrounded by a fine wall. There are hearaldic and symbolic carvings in the wall. This one is of a Cardinal Virtue:
The garden is planted with the Fleur de Lys, Shamrocks, Roses, and Thistles for France, Ireland, England and Scotland.
