Comments: When I went to Liverpool, England I looked up our last name Wood, the print out I recieved was fascinating. The print out had our family coat of armst on it. the name wood came from a Norman surname which ranks as one of the oldest. The first record of our name is shown in Dumfriesshire in 1150. We were descended from Ernald de Vosco a Norman knight. Later the surname Wood emerged as a notable English family in the county of Dumfries and by 1350 in Peebles. Thomas Wood settled in in Virginia before the mayflower in 1620 this is some of the information you may like to know that i recieved in England. Krystel (Wood) Hodgden

Comments: It is heartening to see so many wood's. I don't know about the rest of you but I get tired of people adding an "s" to our last name. Our Wood line has been traced back to the 1700's with some wood brothers coming to South Carolina from England where som stayed and others moved South to Louisiana.

Comments: My family came to the Carolinas in the 1700s, then spread out to Kentucky, Tennessee and coastal Georgia. I was born in north Alabama as was my father and his. My dad has told me storys of Woods'going to Texas from Tennessee, and more storys about our fa ily during the Civil War. I think my family came to the carolinas from either Scottland or Wales and the name Wood might have been spelled "Woode" until arrival at the colonies. The reason for the droping of the e is unknown to me. You have a great site! Have fun with it. Thanks, M.L.Wood
