Welcome to Benoni-rama, scorecard for the Benoni researcher.
What’s in a name? Wouldn’t a Benoni by any other name smell as Sweet? Who knows. The name Benoni first appears in the Bible (Genesis 35:18) when Rachel names her last son Benoni or “son of my sorrow” only to have Jacob rename him Benjamin “son of my right hand.”
Of the six Benoni Sweets that I have encountered, the earliest appears to be Benoni Sweet, born March 28, 1663 in Warwick, Kent, RI to parents James Sweet and Mary Greene. He begins a line that produces three more Benonis.
- Benoni, son of Benoni and Elizabeth Manchester.
- Benoni, son of Benoni and Isabell (Unknown)
- Benoni, son of Benoni and Lydia Dimmick.
In addition to these four, there are also- Benoni, son of James Sweet and Mary Sherman.
- Benoni, son of John Sweet and Margaret Congdon
I would not be at all surprised to find even more Benoni Sweets out there. If you know of others, please drop a line.
