Winter Wonderland, April 4-9, 2003
Hello, here's a pictorial update from Michigan, the new capital of the Winter Wonderland! As some of you may know, we had ice storms Thursday and Friday, which downed a lot of trees and power lines (our bush in front that was toppled). I have heard estimates that about 700,000 people (or about 270,000 homes) were without power, and Detroit Edison had to call in 20 crews from outside Michigan.
It is truly an amazing sight to have everything encased in silvery ice. There is a constant, all-consuming crackle of sound outside as the wind blows, and the sun glints off everything like it had a spell cast on it.
We lost power late Friday night, and lit some candles (Rachel said "Take a picture with me!"). Then, we huddled in bed with layered clothing (the warmest room, especially with the 5 of us and candles burning). We played Uno, read books, and "camped out."
Meanwhile, since all our phones are cordless, the only ones that worked were our cell phones. Jeremy took it upon himself to call for help, and he had a couple lines going at once.
We got about 6 inches of snow Monday morning, and freezing rain Monday afternoon. Our power was restored Wednesday afternoon, and Cable Internet Thursday afternoon. Imagine, one day living with Lisa Without Internet! Ugh!
All of this is unusual weather for April! Hope you all have a great spring.
