OLIVER GEORGE BAKER

Oliver George Baker was born 25 September 1857 in Worth (?), Worth County, Missouri.  May have been born on 12 September 1857 or in 1858.  He was living in Fremont County, Iowa in January 1886.  While living in Cass County, Nebraska, he married Martha Bell McQuin from Fremont County, Iowa on 8 February 1881 in Otoe County, Nebraska.  She was born on 27 May 1862.  They lived near Union, Cass County, Nebraska in July of 1890.
In the spring of 1895, they moved in three covered wagons to the South Canadian River, in Oklahoma Territory.  Here he homesteaded (SE ¼ S19-16N14W).  The moved due to land grant from Teddy Roosevelt.  There was Oliver, his wife and two of the older boys, Charlie and Walter (Hop).  Four of the children, Joe, Gertie, Blanche (Pete) and Edgar stayed with Oliver’s sister Mary, and her husband, Will Marks in Nebraska.
Martha died at the birth of her son on 28 July 1895 on the farm in Dewey County, Oklahoma Territory.  She was buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Dewey County.  She was the first person to buried there.
along the sandy South Canadian where he chose to live.  He homesteaded the S.E. ¼ of Section 19 in Boyd Township July 1, 1903.
He had a grist mill which he used to grind corn for his family and his neighbors.  Pony Man (an Indian neighbor) would ring his bag of parched corn to be ground.  This smelled good and was good to eat by the hands-full.  He also had a sawmill which he and his family of five boys operated.  This was powered by a steam engine.  Dry cedar was hauled from the hill sides to burn and make the necessary heat for the steam.  The sawmill didn’t stay in one place all the time.  They took the big bundle some thing apart and moved it closer to the trees at times.  They had a dug-out near the mill which was used to put their Dutch-oven in and prepare food.  They butchered and smoked their own meat.  Corn cobs were used for smoking the meat.
There was also the sorghum mill.  Honey-drip cane, which grew twice as tall as a man’s head, was grown and used for sorghum.  Mules or horses powered this mill.  Many a meal was made on cornbread and molasses by the Baker family.

 They had 7 children:

Charles Arthur Baker  b. 10 Feb 1882  d. 25 Dec 1972
Walter Samson Baker  b. 15 Feb 1884  d. 25 Dec 1962
Joel Thomas Baker  b. 1 Jan 1886   d. 9 May 1963
Gertrude Arvilla Baker b. 10 Feb 1888  d. 17 May 1927
Raymond Blanchard Baker b. 24 Jul 1890   d. 7 Jan 1975
Edgar Clifton   b. 16 May 1892  d. 14 Nov 1971
James Oliver Baker  b. 15 Jun 1895   d. 30 Sept 1895

Oliver was living in Thomas, Oklahoma at the age of 43 when he married Mrs. Mary A. Taylor.  She was aged 46 and was from Butte, Oklahoma.  They were married on 4 February 1906 in Thomas, Custer County, Oklahoma.
Mary had a family of 6 children from a previous marriage.  Three of them were already married and had stayed in Missouri.  Jim, Alice and Annie had come with their mother to Oklahoma.
In 1915, Oliver bought a relinquishment of land adjoining the south section of the homestead.
Mary died on 9 April 1933 in Dewey County, Oklahoma (?).  She was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.    They had no children.  Her tombstone reads Mary Alice (Arnett) Taylor.  Believe Arnett is maiden name, with Taylor being her surname from her first marriage.

CHARLES ARTHUR BAKER

Charles was born on 10 February 1882.  He was either born in Fremont County, Iowa or Cass County, Nebraska.  According to census records from 1920 in Oklahoma, he was born in Iowa, which seems the more probable of the two.
In 1905, he married Katie Hazel Roberts, daughter of George Washington Roberts and Catherine Roberts.  She was born in Elk Falls, Kansas on 1 September 1889 and moved with her family to Oklahoma in 1892.  They settled on a farm near Fay, Oklahoma Territory near the South Canadian River.  Her family’s descent can be traced back to the Mayflower through her father’s family, with his mother being a 6th generation Bradford.
Charles and Katie were married at the home of her mother by Edward Prickett,  with Clarence McQuin and Catherine (Katie’s mother) having acted as witness’ to the marriage. These families were intertwined in marriage, with Clarence being a relative of Charles, and Edward being a relative of Katie’s.
After their marriage, Charles and Katie bought the homestead of Dabner McQuin, uncle of Charles.  It consisted of 160 acres.  He would visit the homestead about once a week for a number of years.  Sometime in 1920, the house on the property burned and the barn was then converted to living quarters for the family where their twin children, Hazel and Harold were born.
Charles farmed the land, much as his father before him, and spent his spare time fishing along the South Canadian.   Katie raised their children and ran the household.  The Baker children from this household attended the old Bell school along with their many Baker, Roberts and Prickett cousins.  All with the exception of Harold who had been born blind and attended school at the Muskogee School for the Blind.
In about 1936, Charles and Katie left the family farm after a severe hail storm damaged their crops, as did others of the Baker family,  and removed to California.  When the farm was sold in 1966 for $5000.  Charles had  retained the minerals rights to 25 %  the land.  Oil was eventually found and wells were drilled.  The production was terminated shortly after the discovery, however, with the rise in production costs, and the wells were capped.  These rights have since been passed to the heirs of Charles and Katie.
Upon their arrival in California, they settled first near San Francisco, but eventually bought land in San Pablo, Contra Costa County, California.  Here they owned 2 parcels of land, one on which the house had been built, the other containing land on which Charles had a large garden.  The house was small by today’s standards; one bedroom, dinning room with a large kitchen.  There were several “out” buildings on the property, one being a chicken coop, another which could be converted to living quarters if necessary.  Charles worked in his garden with Katie canning all that he grew.  Chicken were a regular part of Sunday dinner when Katie returned from church services.  Many a week-end were spent with the children and grandchildren that lived in the area assisting in chicken-plucking. Katie would then prepare the evening meal with all the family members gathered around the dinning room table.  It seemed as if there were always children at the old house.  Usually grandchildren following Charles around the garden or watching Katie whip up something divine in the kitchen.
Then in 1956, the world around the Baker household as I had known it came to an abrupt end.  On 1 August 1956, Katie died of a heart attack.  She was buried at the Sunset View Cemetery, in Berkeley, California.
Charles would continue his life at the old place for a number of years.  He eventually went to live with his daughter, Hazel (Baker) Mashburn in San Jose, California.  He died in San Jose on 25 December 1972 and was buried next to his wife of some 50 years.
