The Buna Veteran's Memorial Organization was formed to provide an organizational framework through which U.S. military veterans of war and peace, past, present and future,
who were either born, lived or died in the Buna Texas area, could be shown the respect and honor deserved by those who have earned the special distinction of "VETERAN".
The memorial is located on Hwy 96 just North of the Business 96 intersection, South of the Buna crossroads. It is near the road indicating the way to downtown Buna. Funds
to build the memorial were donated or earned by the citizens of Buna through fund raising activities. Land on which the memorial is placed was donated by Bubba and Bernice Horsley.
Maintenance and future expansion of the memorial will be handled by a board of Trustees elected by the Buna Memorial membership committee.
MONUMENT DESIGN
The memorial is made of Fox Hill Granite and includes one center die, two side center dies and four wings.
The center design includes a 6 ft. tall, 3 ft. 6 in. wide, 10 in. thick, die flanked by two 2 1/2 ft. tall, by 2 1/2 ft. wide, by 8 in. thick side dies. The three dies are placed on a 14 ft. long by 18 in. wide by 1 ft. tall base.
The four wings of the design are 4 ft. tall, 4 ft. wide, 6 in. thick. The four wings are placed on individual bases, each measuring 6 ft. long, 8 in. tall, 16 in. wide. Two cement extensions have been built on the monument for future wing additions.
Placed on the front of the large center die is the name of the memorial, Buna Veteran's Memorial, A Dedication to Our Veterans, a single Lone Star representing Texas, a colored etching of an eagle on the U.S. flag, and the third verse of " America the Beautiful." On the back of the center die is a five foot etching of a soldier representing all the veterans listed on the memorial.
The emblems of the six different branches of the service are displayed on the two small center dies.
Veterans' names listed on the memorial are from the War of 1812 through the present.
These words, "Chiseled in Stone, Etched in our Hearts" and the names of the fifteen Buna veterans, who were killed in action are located around the base of the center dies.
Listed on the front and back of the four wings are the names of the Buna veterans, both peacetime and wartime, who qualified to have their name placed on the memorial.
A 60 ft. walkway connects the memorial to the parking lot. Approaching from the parking lot at the beginning of the walkway to the right side, is a 2 ft. by 4 ft. granite marble marker. Written on this marker is a short history of the memorial. Halfway down the walkway is the flagpole where the U.S. flag is proudly flown. Running the length on both sides of the walkway is the Memory Walk. On these memory stones families and businesses pay honor to individuals or organizations. Two additional flag poles were added on each side of the center pole in 1992 and flys the Texas State flag to the left and the Disable Veterans flag on the right. |
