The First Church

Records show that the first community was located up the "Tower Road" in the vicinity of the Pioneer Cemetery. Here the first chrch services were held under a tree called "Gaelic Tree". The first church was built near here in 1834, on the only public road, which ran from New Glasgow through Blue Mountain, Garden of Eden, and East River St. Mary's to Sherbeooke. The church was made of loga and the congregation sat on benches for seats. The offering was taken up on long handled wooden ladels which were passed in from the sides.

The ladles can be seen in the back of the present church. At this time there was no regular minister and the people were ministered to by supple ministers. The second church was built in 1856.

In 1968 a Cairn was built, and donated, on the site of the first church by Mr. Allison McCulloch. On the Cairn a plaque bearing the inscription, "Site of the first Church used by the early settlers from 1843 to 1856, donated by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Forshner, and Daughter Diane."
