| The History of Blue Mountain, Pictou County, Nova Scotia | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Soon after the year 1815, William Urquart from Glen Urquart in Scotland settled in Blue Mountain. He ws the first settler, in 1818 William Ross (Deacon) joined Mr. Urquart. It was Mr. Ross who gave the place its name in Gaelic "Bhron Gorm", blue and green are almost synonyms and it was really Green Mountain, he intended it to be. Mr. Urquart was the first settler but he wasn't necessarly the first European. It is believed that in 1398 the crew members of Henry Sinclair walked through Blue Mountain on their was from Guysborough to the burning tar pits in what is now known as Stellerton. William Urquart, the first settler, settled on land that is now the farm of Anne Ross. Family records show that in 1838 my Great-grandfather's, Great-grandmother Isobel MacKay acuired this land that was first taken up by Mr. Urquart. |
