Comments: | Ginny, You are fabulous! The County needs an historian independent of the Steinhaus gang. I grew up in Red Oaks Mill and Wappingers. First golf lesson at the Cider Mill. Great post cards!!! All Dutchess relatives known and accounted for. Thank you. One of my lines from Job Tyler Andover MA 1640's/Henry Tyler Charles City County, VA. I study Oakwood contacts, Elias Hicks, UGRR etc. Hallowell?/Vassar Guest House tunnels etc. UGRR needs a visitors Center near 84 near Millbrook. I thought that Taconic gas station would do, if cleaned up. Keep up the good work. David |

Surnames I am Researching: | Rees/Tuttle |
Comments: | My 3rd great-granduncle Dr. Ambrose Rees was born in Bristol, England of welsh parents. This family emigrated to Quebec City, Canada c1820. Dr. Rees came to New York State and I located him in the 1850 and 1860 Putnam Co. census living in Cold Springs with his wife Adah M. Tuttle. Adah was born in New York State. I believe the children born to this couple were: Julia Ann c1842; Mary F. c1844; Elizabeth Matilda c1846; Sarah Fredrika c1849; William A. c1854; and John A. c1857. I believe Mary F married Charles C. Pollock, and they were located living in Poughkeepsie in the 1880 census, and her mother Adah was a member of their household. Ambrose died in 1862 and Adah died in 1891 and are buried in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in section 6, lot 84, area 121. I would think the Pollock graves would be in the same cemetery. |

Comments: | In my prior post of today, I neglected to mention that Susan Clyde McNeal Worden's brother, and my great uncle, Archibald McNeal, who was born in Newburgh, died in the mid-1940's and is buried with his wife, Anna Drake, in the old cemetery in New Hamburg, NY. They were both in their 70's when they died. They were also childless. Anna was from a family of rivermen from New Hamburg, and was invalided from a stroke for many years before her death. The couple had lived in various lodgings on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for many years, and Uncle Archie sold dry goods at retail for many years in the city for such firms as R. H. Macy and Plummer-McCutcheon. Do you have anything on the burials in the New Hamburg cemetery that might reference this couple, and of the extensive Drake family? |

Comments: | In a Google search for "Homer Worden" of Poughkeepsie, who died in 1912, and was married at the time to my great aunt Susan Clyde McNeal of Newburgh, your page on the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery came up. I noted that Homer's parents (his father was Abram and his mother was Maria Broas) and his first wife are listed there in a plot. Although I did not do a complete search, I know that when Susan died in Newburgh in 1942, she was interrred with Homer at the same cemetery. Homer was said to have been a wealthy ink inventor and manufacturer whose business may have been in New York City in 1912. Susan had married Homer some time in the 1890's, some 20 years after his first wife had died. Susan and Homer had no children. |

Canada. Searches of Palatine immigrants to the new world yield no version
of Faddle that we can recognize. On with the search!!

Another veteran of the Texas Revolution who came to Seguin soon after the Battle of San Jacinto, was Solomon Brill. When he first came here he was a house guest of Juan N. As stated before Mr. Brill, with several men from our town-then called walnut Springs -were commissioned by Juan N. Seguin, the military commander of the Bexar District, to perform this last service for the martyrs of the Alamo. Mr. Brill was an expert casket maker, and , he with his helpers constructed this walnut casket and in it they placed the five skulls and other bones which they! believed to be those of leaders, because of metal insignia adjacent to 'these bones.! This casket was buried twenty paces from the southeast corner of the Alamo. Until Mr. Brill's death in 1891, he kept the secret of the exact location, and at that time he confided to his son-in-law the above stated facts. It is likely that for some particular reason the location of this burial spot was kept a secret. Juan Seguin in after years deserted the Texas cause. He believed injustice and discrimination had been heaped upon him because of his nationality. He lived in Mexico after the year 1842. If Mr. Brill contributed no other service to the Republic of Texas, he should have a warm spot in the memory of all Texans. Mr. Brill received bounty certificate No.2952 for 1280 acres of land for having served in the Army of Texas from October 25 1835, to October 17, 1836. In 1842 he was a member of Captain Mathew Caldwell's company in the Battle of Salado Creek near San Antonio. Mr Brill married Hepsibah Day, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Emery (HEMBREE) Day. He was a charter member of the Texas Veterans Association, on having attended the first meeting in Houston in 1873. Mrs James Damon of Seguin has a framed collection of his veteran badges and a certificate of membership signed by Moses Austin Bryan as secretary of the association when it was organized. In this same frame is a certificate of membership in the Texas Veterans' Association for Mrs Hepsibah Day Brill, wife of Solomon Brill It is evident from this, that the wife of a veteran was also eligible for membership. Mr. Brill was born in Poughkeepsie New York, and had attended a medical school in New York. At the time of the epidemic of yellow fever in the early eighteen-thirty's, Mr..Brill volunteered to come, to New Orleans for service in the work against the terrible scourge. it was here that he not only gave his service as a physician but became an expert in the making of caskets. (This may also be a reason for his selection by Juan Seguin to make the casket for the martyrs of the Alamo.) New Orleans had so few to render aid to the dead and dying that those there learned to perform many different kinds of work. At New Orleans he enlisted with company who came out to help Texas fight for her independence. Mr. Brill and his wife are buried in marked graves, three miles east of Sequin, in sight of State Highway 3-A (renamed 90-A). There is a concrete wall which encloses the family burial grounds south of highway. This land was a part of the original grant to Solomon Brill and is still in the possession of his descendants. This is located in the files of the DAR Library at the Alamo in San Antonio. The date this article was published in the paper in Seguin was 2/5/1937. TAX ROLL OF GUADELUPE COUNTY 1846 BRILL, S. W. Comments: | One of the names in your coroner's report was James B. Rensley...
Poughkeepsie Sunday Courier Dec. 29, 1907, page 5 AGED OAR-MAKER A SUICIDE. James B. Rensley, the aged oar maker, killed himself Tuesday, in his apartments at No. 96 Union street, where he lived alone. He shot himself through the head with a bullet from a 32-calibre revolver. Mr. Knauss of the firm of Knauss Bros., butchers, called to supply Mr. Rensley with meat about 11 o-clock Tuesday morning. Nobody answered his knock. The shade to one of the front windows was up and through the glass Mr. Knauss saw Mr. Rensley sitting in a chair. He knocked again, and there being no answer, he forced his way in. He saw the revolver on the floor and a wound in the aged man's forehead. Mr. Knauss notified Coroner Selfridge, who took charge of the remains. Dr. John S. Wilson performed an autopsy after which the Coroner returned a verdict of suicide. The deceased was eighty-seven years of age. He was a kind *** man. For many years Mr. Rensley was a familiar figure in Poughkeepsie. Anywhere along the water front the mere mention of his name *** reminiscences of the long ago days when Poughkeepsie oarsmen triumphed in aquatic contest and Poughkeepsie ships sailed the seas of the world. It was Mr. Rensley's claim that in 1853 he made the first spoon oars ever produced in the U.S. Small models of these oars he made with great care and patience in his later days, and from their sale he realized a small and irregular income. Mr. Rensley several years ago wrote a history of his life, which was published in condensed form in the Courier. The following acts are taken from it: James B. Rensley was born in Hyde Park in 1820. He was an all-round athlete, who performed many feats in running, walking, rowing and mowing. He participated in fifty-nine events from 1839 to 1871. Two achievements on which he prided himself were the defeat of the famous Indian, Deerfoot, in two five-mile foot races, and mowing an acre of grass in one hour and twenty minutes. During a trip which he made to the Far West he was captured by the Creek Indians and remained in their custody two years. While in captivity he wooed and won a white girl, the daughter of an immigrant couple, who had been killed in a raid. He had an Indian rival, and to win the girl Rensley "ran the gauntlet." His fleetness saved him from serious injury and according to the Indian code of ethics the girl was given to him as a bride. The chief of the tribe gave the couple a guard to escort them to Chicago. On the way Rensley was obliged to kill his jealous Indian rival. The couple arrived safely at Chicago, but on the way to Buffalo the girl died. For many years Mr. Rensley lived in one of the Southwick houses on South Water street. His wife was a Miss Relyea, of Ulster County. He had two daughters, Mrs. Edward Quigley, who is dead, and Mrs. Lettie Luckey, wife of Rev. Frank Luckey, pastor of the Congregational Church, in New Haven, Conn. For a number of years Mr. Rensley was an inmate of the Firemen's Home, at Hudson. Of late he had been residing in Poughkeepsie. He was in poor circumstances and received aid from ex-Mayor Arnold and other charitable people. Not long ago Lawyer James Carroll successfully prosecuted a suit for him to recover damages from the American Express Company for non-delivery of a consignment of oars made for sale at the Harlem regatta. The sad state of poverty to which Mr. Rensley was reduced in his later days aroused pity for him wherever he was known. There were many ready to help and aid him. It is a matter of much regret that he should have decided to end his life by his own hands. The funeral of James Rensley was held Tuesday from Coroner Selfridge's undertaking rooms. Rev. W. P. George conducted the services. Several friends were present and several handsome wreaths and bouquets were received. The remains were interred in the Poughkeepsie Rural cemetery. A friend defrayed the expenses of the funeral and interment. |

Comments: | Hi, I was pleased to see my SENK ancestors, right where I last remember seeing them, in St. Charles Cem. Dover Plains. Daniel David DeLaney, in St. Denis Cem. Hopewell Junction, seems to have lost some of his relations. Did you not read all the stones surrounding him? Or, are they down and lost since I last visited? Got to be 30 years and counting now. I will look up my pictures and burial records on St. Denis. Maybe some of them didn't have stones? I am currently looking for Michael Newell 1840, Civil War, POW, Andersonville survivor, had blacksmith shop Academy St. Pok., Died 17 July 1897. Can't seem to find his final resting place. My cousin John in Texas is looking too. I'll let you know when I find St. Denis records. Oh, by the way, Himself (Daniel David DeLaney) was born in Kilmadum. Ditto his sister Bridget who marrried Flynn. KILMADUM MUCKALEE are the correct spellings. Check your records. The tombstones ARE spelled correctly. I remember! I would imagine the iron fence surrounding the obliesk is now gone? The family removed the wrought iron gate years ago for safe keeping. They are stolen for souvenirs. It resides with a DeLaney descendant in NH. How can I access 'modern' 1880 to date St. Peter's Cemetery records? Nice thing about living in a cemetery. Quiet neighbors. bj on bearcove in beautiful downeast Maine Thanks for all the work you are doing. It is my history too. bj |

(Their children are found in an orphanage in 1860.) I know they were members of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. (The Church in now restored.) No one seems to know where St. Mary's RC Church parisheners would have been buried. I've looked at the cemetery's in the area that were in existence in the 1850's. They all seem to have fairly well-off persons buried there. My ancestors were Irish immigrants and probably would not be buried in the cemeterys with the Nelsons and Davenports. Any suggestions as to where to look for my ancestors' graves? |

Surnames I am Researching: | Ringwood, Holmes, Converse, Zahn |
Comments: | This is a wonderful thing you do here. I was born in PO-K, but we
moved around and when we settled it was in Severna Park, Maryland. I was
hoping to find the Ringwoods here as my mom said they were buried there
and her baby sister, Theresa Converse, was also buried there with the
Ringwoods. I hope, as you finish, I will be able to find my mother's
relatives. It is very hard to research from Florida, where I now live.
Thanks so much for your work. Going through the pages was very relaxing with the music you have chosen. MY Gr-Grandmother was a Ringwood married to a Holmes, my grandmother a Holmes, married to Converse. My mother is a Converse who married a Zahn. I am a Zahn who married a Ketcham, then a Poole and back to Zahn. I am not sure of the first names of the Ringwoods in question. I sound like I am the woman who swallowed the fly, I don't know why I swallowed a fly, perhaps...... |

Mary G.Ringwood. Married to W.E.Holmes and widowed. Then married James S.Clair. I do know that her Mother is intered there and also William Ringwood and Katherine his wife. Possibly deceased in 1931. |
