Surnames I am Researching: BURGESS, COLE
Comments:My brick wall is David Burgess, who I suspect is the son of Thomas Burgess. Thomas died in 1786, after serving in the Ulster militia. However, he apparently moved between Dutchess and Ulster during the years 1765-1786. Thomas's parents were Mathias Burgess and Dorcas Cole. Her father was Israel Cole, who is listed on the tax rolls in Dutchess in 1754. I suspect the whole family came from Yarmouth, Mass., shortly before that. I am looking for a gravesite for Thomas, his first wife (name unknown), and his parents. Their farm was in Southeast, which later became part of Putnam county. Thomas had a sister, Priscilla, and I have conflicting sources about whether she married a PERKINS or a CALKINS. Thanks, Ginny, for all your work!

Comments:I am trying to find out if Ruth Ann Alverson is burried in the poughkeepsie rural cemetery and if so the dates of her birth and death. She married Henry Perkins...the perkins were farmers in the area for many many years. Ruth's son George Alverson Perkins married Catherine (Katie) Wood. I would also like to find out if any Wood's are located in the cemetery. I know Mary Ann Wood married a Campbell and is supose to be located here. Also would like to verify that Flora Kate Perkins is burried here. Have some info on the Perkins, Wood, Burr familes and am willing to share. Thanks for all of the work you've done

Ancestors from Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess Counties, NY - Y/N: yes
If Yes - Which Counties: Westchester
I am from - County/State: Suffolk Co., N. Y.
Surnames I am Researching: many
Comments:I have lots of surnames. Ten Broeck, Leggett, De La Maitre (Le Maistre), Van Buren, Mulder, Hallenbeck, Van Deusen, Freeland, Mellen, Alger, Palmer, Peake, Farrand, etc. on my father's side. Leonard Freeland, b. in Mass. abt. 1786, married Maria Van Deusen, b. Jan. 1789 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack, New York in 1806. Their first born son John (and perhaps only son), b. 1807 at Claverack, married Eliza Bryan, b. 1823, in Manhattan in 1844. Their daughter Helena Willett Freeland, b. 1846, married Charles Alger, b. Feb. 22, 1836 at Stockbridge,Mass., on Jan. 4, 1866 at the bride's home 'Elmwood' at Greenport, Columbia County, New York. Their second daughter, Helena Willett Alger, born Nov. 27, 1870 at Frostburg, Maryland, married Frank Farrand, born Sept. 10, 1866 at Greenport, Col. Co., N. Y., on Oct. 14, 1896 at Christ Episcopal Church at Hudson, New York. Their third son of three sons was Frank Freeland Farrand, my father, born in 1908 at Manhattan, N. Y. My grandfather Frank was a twin of William Peake Farrand. The twins were born to Joseph Steevens Farrand and his second wife Helen Peake, born in Hudson, N. Y. in 1829. Joseph was from England, but Helen could trace her ancestry to Christopher Peake who went to Boston in 1634 and who married Dorcas French who went to Boston in 1633. My grandmother Helena Willett Alger had the most interesting ancestors of all. That is where the Mellens and Freelands of Massachusetts come from and where the New York ancestors going back to the early founding of Albany come from (Major Dirck Wesselse Ten Broeck and his wife Christina Van Buren, etc.

Isaac Sr. gave his son, Isaac jr. a sawmil in 1790, according to history of Putnam Co. But we don't know who he married, how many kids there were, or what church they belonged to. According to his Pension papers, his son Andrew and his daughter Mary Brewer filed for his pension papers and said he died in 1832. This is about all we know, except Andrew moved to Sussex Co. with his 3 children and married a 2nd time. So his 1st wife died in Dutchess/Putnam Co. Anything on Isaac would be great.

Comments:Sis-in_Law sent me Poughkeepsie Newspaper article dated Aug. 8,2003. I worked at the Dutchess Co. Infirmery back in the early 1980's.
I have been trying to trace my great-grandfather, William, and his wife, Elizabeth, Campbell. They lived in UnionVale, what i call lower verbank by the Village Inn. He was a common day labourer. I have found him in several old census's and the last was the 1930 census when he was still alive, in his 70's and living alone and still a labourer in Verbank.
There is a good possibility he and my grandfather were rum-runners. My grandfather said he was under the bridge next to the Germond house in Stanfordville, the night that family was murdered and says it was the brother during an argument over illegal liquor trade money.
I have physically searched every known cemetery in Millbrook, Verbank and up thru Amenia, Millerton and Bangall, where my grandfather is said to have been born, and Stanfordville, and even risked the snakes in the Clove. I figured if there was a potter's field that is where i would find him and his wife. Please let me know if they are in there? William and Elizabeth Campbell.

Comments:Union cemetery in East Park yielded a lot of info. I wish I could get some history of this area but doubt there would have been newspapers back in middle and late 1800's. Sleight is rather common up there but I have never been able to hook up to the original Cornelis Barentsen Sleght --only being able to go back to 1740--and The Hague has said 'Sleight is no Dutch name' so I give in, it's English with perhaps Norse background. I have become convinced as I live in the North of England now and come across it everywhere. Genealogy is fun, a lot of work, and addictive but oh how I wish I'd find a Sleight who was into it the way I am...!

Comments:I can't believe this, my cousin had your page book-marked!!!
I can provide you with information about Charles E. Fagan, Laura Mae Hadden,Christopher Atkinson, his wife Florence Jones,(the former mayor of Poughkeepsie, my uncle). Christopher Atkinson his wife Elizabeth Sheehy,(his parents) their son Edward Atkisnon who died march 24, 1961 in Beacon, NY (he's my dad) my mother Frances E. Atkinson (Fagan) she died October 13, 1963 at Highland Hospital. My Aunt Jacquelyn Atkinson-Heady is still living, in Poughkeepsie. Our brick wall is the Sheehy family in newburgh, NY. With the help of your site I might be able to get a little further ahead on my mothers' family or get a few clues for the next time I hit the FHC in Mesa, AZ. My cousin and I have films down there to look at in the next few weeks. With the info you gave me about John Barton and Abigail Smith i will look down there, it is a pretty big center, (regional) so they have a lot of stuff.

Ancestors from Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess Counties, NY - Y/N: yes, I think so
If Yes - Which Counties: Westchester, Saratoga
I am from - County/State: Monroe, NY
Surnames I am Researching: Lawrence
Comments:My great-great-grandfather was Smith Lawrence, who was born in Saratoga County, most likely in what is now Stillwater,in 1792. He married Salley Marner Townsley, whose father was Samuel Townsley. His father was Samuel Lawrence, b. 1760 (location possibly East Chester or Yonkers). Samuel fought in the Revolution from Westchester County and only settled in Saratoga after the war. (He is in the 1800 Census there and Smith appears later.)Samuel's wife is reputed to be Abigail Pell, parents unknown. Abigail is buried in Saratoga, d. 1828. Subsequently, Samuel removed to Yonkers and died there in 1838.

Since Smith Lawrence is a rather unusual name and appears in your report, as does Samuel Lawrence, I wondered what your connection to them might be and whether you might know who Samuel's parents were. That is a piece of information that has so far eluded me. Smith and Salley Lawrence and their oldest three children migrated westward on the Erie Canal in 1827 and settled first in Barre (now part of Albion in Orleans County), where my ancestor Rowland Lawrence was born in 1840. The family moved to Rochester in the year following his birth.

Please let me know even if the answer is "no."

Thanks,
Cousin (?) Mary

Comments:Hello, thanks for letting me looke at your site.. I don't know much about my father's parents, they died in 1980, 1982 when I was only 5 years old.. they were James Connolley married to Mildred Durham in Galena, Maryland. I grew up in Millington, Kent County, Maryland, and have never been able to find history on anyone from my fathers side of the family. (Joseph Connolley Sr.) It was neat to see such dated material on your site. Feel free to drop a line.

Comments:I have just found one particular family of NATION ancestors are buried in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, early 20th century and 1938 and 1961. Your Grandfather most likely would have tended the cemetery at the of the first 2 burials at least.

I think you have done a wonderful job recording your own ancestor inscriptions.

I am hoping to find a memorial to the NATION family, I will keep searching......

Comments:Hi,
Has been some time since I have checked in. I was wonder if there has been or will be any work done on the Rombout Presbyterian Cemetery , Brinkerhoff? This is the site of the old Presbyterian Church which was build in 1747 and destroyed by fire in 1866.
Always enjoy visiting your web pages.
