Dear Ginny,
Thank you for your lovely tribute to the Rural Cemetery. I was born and raised in Poughkeepsie. As a child, after church, my father would take me for walks in the Rural Cemetary to see the ducks and the beautiful river views. It never seemed odd to me to spend my Sunday mornings in late spring or early fall in the resting place of so many of my relatives. My mother's family ( Hey, Pralow and Vail) have a long history in the Hudson River area. My great grandfather
(Pralow surname) was leader of the band at West Point and my grandmother was born and raised there. She had wonderful memories of growing up at West Point ( her name: Lily Pralow Hey). My Grandmother's brother was a drummer boy in the Civil War and died in his teens in the war. My maternal Grandparents, Parents and sister are all "at rest" at the Rural Cemetery. I am currently in the process of making future arrangments for burial for my husband and myself in family plots at the Rural Cemetery. Our family names present in the Rural Cemetery are : Pralow, Hey, Vail, Dalton and Grant. Your web page brought back so many family memories - thank you for your work and dedication to the rich history of Dutchess County. Sincerely, Pat Dalton ( Mc 'Ilwain)

1860 census shows Michael & Bridget Shanaghan(42?/38) (spelled Shanigan in census)with children Mary (13) Michael(12) John (10 and my great-great grandfather) Patrick(5) and Ellen(?1). There may have been a dtr named Bridget (15) who was already married to a Edward Short and moved out.
1870 census shows Edward/Ellen Herrick (50/45) with children Michael(17)Edward(15)Margret(14)Ellen(11 and my great-great grandmother)Mary A(8)Johanna(6)Patrick(5)Eliza(3)John(10 mos).
John Shanaghan married Ellen Herrick approx. 1878 and had a dtr Mary(my great-grandmother) before moving to Bayonne, NJ by 1880.
Many of the Herricks and Shanaghans remained in Hyde Park and I am hoping to connect with someone researching this same family.

I was a Jesuit from 1961-1968 but only visited St. Andrew's only once. What is most unusal is that my father was a Jesuit from 1922 to 1925 and he spent those three years at St. Andrew's. Undoubtedly he attended the funerals of a number of the men buried in the cemetery. Upon leaving the cemetery, he joined the Marines and was stationed in Washington DC where he was the piano accompanist for the Marine Corps Band and was a member of the Marine Honor Guard at the White House -- one of his duties was attending military funerals, most likely at Arlington National Cemetery. I guess he attended a lot of funerals in the decade of his twenties.

I found that James Callahan who married to Julia McEnroe was naturalized October 20, 1888. He wrote he came from Victoria Queen of Great Britian and Ireland. Now I am struggling with the clue I have now. He came to America in 1884. Probably earlier. Would love to have someone help me and guide me to right path of finding his ship! He was only approximately 23 years old when he came to America.

You missed the grave of Teilhard de Chardin, the famous anthropologist-philosopher. Today Jesuits are buried in upper NY State, but for some years when this was a Jesuit formation house, the cemetery was in use.

Interesting to discover this - I've visited the graves, nice to see them on the net

I am a former Jesuit from St.Andrew-on-Hudson and appreciate so much the welcome you give to visit the cemetery at CIA.

I was 18 years old in 1960 when I greeted my parents at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Way when I was a novice there. I shall never forget the expression of joy on my mother's face. She died three years later. It was outside that chapel that I wept after she died, having returned from the funeral.

I welcome your visit to a site I developed called "The Bible Through the Seasons. The URL is http;//biblethroughseasons.com. I have left the Jesuits, am now married, and serve as pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Vineland, NJ. My wife, Gina is pastoring with me!

Grace and peace to you,
Pastor Nick Connolly

Also a good many are from Onondaga Country and are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse. Do you happen to know if someone has done the work you've done on the Oakwood Cemetery? Is there a site that lists cemeteries and then has links to the work people have done on transcribing headstones like you have done?

Thanks, now I'll start looking at your listings.

Bravo, Ginny! Your efforts to save the old "Poor House Cemetery" is to be commended. It's bad enough when a cemetery is neglected and forgotten, but unforgivable when it could be lost to modern day legalities. In the past, we have lost many cemeteries to construction. I would like to help on a week-end, this way I could bring my kids to see where their great-grandfather is buried. They would also enjoy helping to clean up the area. I could also help to find a local fencing company or help in some kind funding rasing project, you know I will be watching for anymore updates, and it is great to see there are more people interested in the faciliy and cemetery! Dutchess County is wealthy in it's history, a very beautiful place to visit, and the view from rt 84 is spectacular!

Many cemeteries and old schools have gone by the wayside, due to lack of caring by the local citizenry. A few years ago, we were researching at a city cemetery now turned into a park, where kids play ball, and found tombstones turned inward in a circle practically buried under, except for a few still showing, at the top!!! Ginny,
I think it is wonderful that you have decided to try and preserve the cemetery at the poor house in Dutchess county. I am behind you 100%. In all of my researching efforts I have not come across anyone who is as dedicated and thorough as you are. I wish I lived close enough to be one of your volunteers to help clean it up.
I am especially interested as we can not find the grave of our great grandmother. Our greatgrandfather is buried in the Poughkeepsie Rural cemetery, but she is not. Maybe for some reason she is in this cemetery. I will be watching your site for more information on this cemetery. Hopefully there are enough of us that are looking for lost family members to help you win this fight. Thank You.

My mother was born in Bangall and lived in the vicinity
of Pine Plains at the time of the Germond murders...so
I am very interested in that case. Also my grandfather and great grandfather worked for a railroad that went through Pine Plains, crossed the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge and went out through Connecticut. My great grandfather Cahill was from Ireland and was killed by his own train while working on this railroad......The family story tells us that his remains were carried home in a basket to my great grandmother who was left with six sons. The railroad gave over the house (railroad owned) they were living in as part of a settlement. I certainly would like to find out more about this railroad and to see if their records are still available....one of those sons (my grandfather's brother) was also killed while working on the same railroad, some place in Connecticut....so says family tradition......
If you can help me to find more information, please let me know. Thanks, Brian F. McIntyre

Hi,

I am descended from Susan E. Cowles wife of James Odell listed in your transcriptions for Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Cemetery. I know James outlived Susan and was living in Poughkeepsie in 1860. I don't know where he went after his wife's death in 1862. He had quite a few children and might have eventually moved to where one of them lived. If you come across him in the Poughkeepsie area I would appreciate finding out. James was born in 1807 in Clinton, Dutchess Co. Thank You. Todd Peterson

I am looking for my grandmother, Cora Louisa Green, b. 4 April 1856, Poughkeepsie, I think. Also looking for her parents, Francis C. Green and Catherine Euphemia Traver. Francis was born in England. Catherine maybe born in Poughkeepsie. She died 11 Feb 1915 in Poughkeepsie. Francis was in the Civil War. He died of his war injuries 11 June 1887 in NYC. He is buried in Stamford, CT. I am looking for their parents also. His are possibly in Stamford. Cora's first husband was Robert M. Lathrop. In 1880 Cora and Robert were living in Greenburgh, Westchester, NY. They had 3 children with them, Emma, b. ca 1873, Charles, b. ca 1875 and Jessie, b. 1880. I have reason to believe there were 2 other subsequent children born to them. I cannot find these children anywhere. My father was born on Long Island to a second marriage.

Catherine and Francis had one other child, Charles Green, b. 1859. In the late 1880s Charles Green, Catherine and Cora and Robert separately all moved to CT. Catherine died in Poughkeepsie.

If any of this sounds familiar, I would love to hear from you.

hello
I have a headstone in the Greenwood Union Cememtery Rye, New York that says Little Emma and nothing more.
The cemetery office said the burial date and her name was all they had on record for this person.

Buried Oct 12,1894
Emma C. Foshay

I have found the following obituary notice iin the Port Chester Daily Journal Oct. 11, 1894:

Mrs. Emma C. Foshay wife of John Foshay, of the firm of Foshay and Brewer, Rye Neck died Tues, Oct 9th, aged 55 years and 11 months. She was the daughter of the late John and Louise Mosser, and was born in Mamaroneck. Mrs. Foshay was a kindly christian woman, beloved by all who knew her.The funeral services will be held from the house tomorrow afternoon Friday, at 3, O'clock. The Rev. Mr. Holmes, of the M.E.Church , will officiate, and Internment will be in Union Cemetery. (note it does not say Greenwood union cemetery in the Obit).
I noticed that there are some Foshays on this website and also at least one Emma. Could there be a connection, can any one help?

I found my great grandparents on your site. It gave me informtion that I did not have before. I have been looking for over a year now on any kind of information I could find, and came up with nothing everytime. My sister and I will be making time to go to Poughkeepsie in the very near future, get a look at the place where my family is from. We are hoping to get records while we are there as well. Thank you Ginny for making this site without it I would still have nothing.

My grandfather George married Anna Colgan. They moved to Connecticut and took John Colgan, her father along. All of the men worked on the RR. Is is true that all the records are gone? It was a large family. TB went thru the family and killed most.
