Tales from Newf-L
Newf-L is an email list for enthusiasts of the Newfoundland dog.  If you don't know what a Newfoundland is, visit the Newf-L webpage  for pictures of some of our dogs and information on this wonderful breed.Recently, someone posted to the list asking how everyone got involved with the breed.
Lord Byron answered this question in his epitaph for his Newfoundland, Boatswain:

EPITAPH TO A DOG
NEAR THIS SPOT ARE DEPOSITED THE REMAINS
OF ONE
WHO POSSESSED BEAUTY
WITHOUT VANITY,
STRENGTH WITHOUT FEROCITY,
AND ALL THE VIRTUES OF MAN WITHOUT HIS VICES
THIS PRAISE, WHICH WOULD BE UNMEANING
FLATTERY
IF INSCRIBED OVER HUMANASHES,
IS BUT A JUST TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF
BOATSWAIN, A DOG
WHO WAS BORN AT NEWFOUNDLAND
MAY, 1803
AND DIED AT NEWSTEAD ABBEY
NOV. 18, 1808

                        -Lord Byron

But check out the Stories page for a  compilation of some of the (more modern) responses to this question.  Find out why people live with, and say they could not live without, these drooling, shedding beasties who are on average 130 to 150 pounds.  Then visit the Names page  for the whys and where-to-fors of the perfect Newfie name.
If you have a Newfoundland I would love to add Your Story about why you own a Newf or how you named your Newf to this site.
