Ray MacDonald - 08/24/00 17:36:02 My Email:rmacdon@execpc.com Surname being Researched: MACDONALD | Comments: I'm trying to find out if a family I've traced through the Antigonish censuses could be "mine". In 1871 they are listed in the town of Antigonish: Hugh 40, blacksmith, Mary 40, Mary Jane 15, William Alexander 9, Ellen Christina 6, Elizabeth Ann b. Aug, Christina 44 widowed, and Hugh 4. The son Hugh could be my ggrandfather Hugh Howard MacDonald, born 1867. In the 1881 census Mary Jane isn't listed, and there is an "Alexr" age 55, Master Mariner. In 1891 they are listed in Antigonish Harbour - West End. Christina isn't listed, nor "Alexr", or Hugh. This fits in with the story that Hugh left Nova Scotia c1887 due to a Halloween prank gone bad. I've been searching for a long time for my elusive Hugh MacDonald. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks. |

Pat Marshall - 05/22/00 17:11:58 My Email:harrypat@ican.net Surname being Researched: Fraser | Comments: Further to my post of 05/13/00 I wish to add that George Fraser was born in Antigonish to Donald Fraser and Margaret? in 1826 or 27. Donald was a farmer and a Roman Catholic as near as I can tell. Everyone from George on down was Roman Catholic. George as a carpenter according to the 1871 Pictou Co. Census which is where I first find him. I got his parents names from his death certificate and he died in 1877 in Albion Mines which is where he lived. Don't know yet whether he moved there and met Flora? r whether she too is from Antigonish and they moved there later. OR, maybe Donald and family moved to Pictou Co. while George was still young. Also I have not been able to locate where George or Flora are buried. I wonder if maybe they were perhaps bur ed in family plots in Antigonish. I think perhaps Flora died sometime between the 1891 and 1901 census becuase she is on one and not on the other. can anybody shed some light on the family of Frasers? I am stuck on this generation!! Michele Doucette - 08/20/99 03:24:59 My Email:michele.doucette@nf.sympatico.ca Surname being Researched: STEWART, SIMPSON and MACNAUGHTON | Comments: I am trying to locate any information on a William B. STEWART (Blacksmith in Merigomish, Nova Scotia) who married a Janet SIMPSON. It is my understanding that William was born in Scotland about 1823. Do not have any leads as to where. It appears as if Janet SIMPSON was born in Nova Scotia. I have no idea as to her parents. William and Janet had a son Samu l David STEWART who was born on September 18, 1865 in Merigomish, Nova Scotia. Samuel married an Annie MACNAUGHTON, born May 24, 1865 in Riverton, Nova Scotia. I feel strongly that Annie was the daughter of Joseph MACNAUGHTON and his wife Janet (surname u known). Can anyone verify this? My father-in-law has a very old portrait of a James MACNAUGHTON that was proudly displayed in his mother's home in Merigomish, Nova Scotia. Her name was Christina MCIVER. The MACNAUGHTON in question would have been related n some way to her husband John Samuel STEWART (a Railroadman and Farmer). Any help would be appreciated! |

Linda Marinelli - 07/26/99 22:40:41 My Email:lmarinel@gateway.net Surname being Researched: Floyd | Comments: My Father, Onis Floyd (b. 1920), believes that an Irish Catholic Floyd ancestor immigrated from Northern, Ireland to Nova Scotia probably in the early 19th century, but possibly earlier. Onis' father was Roy Floyd (Coffee Co, GA-USA) son of Rowan Floyd (C ffee Co, GA-USA) son of Reuben Perry Floyd (b. NC-USA probably betw. 1845-1850). We do not know the name of Reuben Perry Floyd's father. According to oral family history there was a split possibly in the early 19th century along lines of religion. Part of the family remained Catholic and some family members split off to become anti-Catholic. I mention this only as historical fact. I have no preference along religious lines, but would love to identify family members. My son is the only child of two only chi dren. Thanks-Linda Marinelli |

Gerrie Bligh-Shuck - 04/11/98 05:28:40 My URL:http://N/A My Email:ethereal@ican.net Surname being Researched: CAMERON | Comments: Looking for my gg grandmother and her parents. Her name: Mary Donally Duncan McMillan Cameron. She was born: Wine Harbour, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia October 20 1881. She was married to Joseph Henry Mortimer born: (October 20??)1875 Hull England. Family thinks they were married in Halifax? Mary's parent's names were Mary Jane McLean, born in Inverness, Scotland, she was a midwife and herbalist as per family legend, and Donald Cameron born Inverness too?. Family says these two arrived in Pictou on the ship the Hector. If so, dates don't match unless Hector made a later trip than the 1773 one. Story is: Donald Cameron worked on the Panama Canal or in South America. He returned home to find Mary deceased and laid out in her best clothes on the dining table. Don't know cause of death. Story cont nues ..Donald married twice more. To whom? That is the question. Family legend: could have fathered as many as 27 children.(This I find a little hard to believe, but anyway:)) Siblings of Mary Donally Duncan McMillan Cameron: Dan Cameron (fought WWI, contracted eye disease, became blind.) Died in Shaughnessy Hospital (was Veteren's Hospital then) around 1950's, Vancouver BC. Sister: Elizabeth Florence or Florence Elizabeth Cameron nicknamed "Libby" Libby's husband's name, Geor e Lang born Nov 14 1878, Tipperary, Ireland. Libby born in Goldenville? Guysborough County (don't see mention of a Goldenville) July 25, 1883, died Victoria BC Sept 30 1954. Sister: Irene Cameron no birth date, married a Reeves (Norman?) Norman could be s n's name as well. She moved to Toronto, Ontario..many many years ago, family does not know what happened to her. One more note: It would seem that our family practiced the Scottish way of naming, in otherwords the sons and daughters would take on the names of their elders. eg: Mary's middle name, Donally (named for her father Donald)Duncan name of her grandfather???McMillan(don't have a clue who that would be)and of course the family surname Cameron. Okay, I'll stop now before I write a book. Thanks for any info you might be able to pass my way. Gerrie |

B. Naylor - 11/27/97 19:07:59 My Email:bbnaylor@ns.sympatico.ca Surname being Researched: MacAskill (McAskill) | Comments: Attempting to get some info on my grandfather RONALD MC ASKILL. According to his Marriage Register he married Catherine McLean on Feb 16th, 1903 in Whitney, Cape Breton, NS. His birth place is listed as Judique. His parents are listed as Ronald (Roderi k?) and Mary (MacDonald) MacAskill and they were farmers. Ronald the son was listed as a machinist and his age was 28 in 1903 (born 1875?). His bride was born in Margaree and her age was 24 in 1903 (born 1879?). Witnesses were Archie McAskill and Catherin Jameson (?). My problem is that I have been unable to find any Catholic McAskill's in Cape Breton. It seems they were all Presbyterians! Family members tell me that his siblings were as follows: Angus, Archie, Isabella, Katherine, John, and Allan and that there was a connection to HAVRE BOUCHER, NS on the mainland. In a register of St. Paul's Church I found some other McAskill's, one of whom is an Allan who married Mary MacDougall. They had children in 1901, 1904, 1906, 1907 - this would put Allan of an age where e 'could' be a brother to my grandfather. Am I grasping at straws?? Is there any connection?
