Miss World 2003: Contestant Commentary (Part I)
Miss Ireland, Rosanna Davison - What can I say about this girl? Ever since she was crowned in August, it became fairly obvious that she was going to be up at the top, and gradually, she left the competition in the dust. Not to say there were no more beautiful women there, but Rosanna shined like a gem throughout and will make a fantastic Miss World, allegations or no allegations. In terms of personality, Rosanna in post-pageant interviews did not strike me as the 'intellectual beauty queen' type, when she started telling a reporter about how she wants to 'Be a great Miss World and work with charity' with the least bit of enthusiasm. Indeed, she is a real deal beauty queen.
Miss Canada, Nazanin Afshin-Jam - First of all, it is great to see Canada back up there after a long hiatus (Same with Ireland). This girl really heated up going into the final week of the pageant and represents the best of so many worlds. she is tall, exotic, has great stage presence and is well-spoken. My only complaint is that her make-up should have been more natural on the final telecast, like it had been in the other events.
Miss China, Guan Qi - This is a controversial one. A lot of people claim that she was given the Second Runner-Up spot because she is Miss China, but there is something striking about her. She has that model stage presence, yet there is something sweet and confident about her. I did not personally care for the hairstyle, however. Maybe it was just enjoyable to watch the happy Chinese attendees in the audience waving flags and cheering her on.
Miss India, Ami Vashi - Here is one delegate who was highly under-rated by pageant followers. First of all, the evening gown by Hemant Trivedi was quite a surprise, mostly because of its offbeat style and nude cuts throughout. Ami is a beautiful woman (compared to India's last two representatives) and on top of that, she exuded a lot of down-to-earth vibrance and personality which helped her into the top five. Where she made her big error was in the final question & answer round. Her response should have been simple and to the point. Instead, she began talking herself into a corner and the hostess had to cut her off.
Miss Philippines, Mafae Yunon - This was no surprise either. As I commented earlier, she had been showing up all over Chinese television. There is something about her looks which is attention-grabbing. She is not a classic beauty, but her features are striking and combined with her extremely outgoing personality, it was something the judges must have warmed up to. One criticism is her hairstyle...I think a few of the others she had tried before would have flattered her more. Oh, by the way, this had to be one of the most high-fashion evening gowns of the night. It is 100% catered to her unique sense of style and the shoes just add to the killer effect.
THE FINALISTS
Miss New Zealand, Melanie Paul - For me, she is one of the stars of December 6th. I absolutely loved this delegate, who has the whole 'celebrity' style with a great tan, and most of all, a stunning evening gown. Her lime-green number was one of the most fantastic pieces in the whole pageant. In fact, I would have preferred to see her to see her in the top five than a few others. What a long way she has come from going un-noticed in Miss Asia-Pacific 2000.
Miss Ethiopia, Hayat Mohammed - An absolutely stunning African beauty! Armed with an absolutely 'sweet' face and killer smile, Hayat puts Ethiopia on the beauty pageant map. In the last week, Uganda seemed like the clear frontrunner from Africa, but unfortunately, she did not deliver on the final telecast, whereas Hayat finally came back with a vengeance. Along with New Zealand, she was my other big 'Miss' among the top five finalists. I hope to see more great Ethiopian delegates in the world of pageants.
Miss Peru, Claudia Hernandez - A strong contender from the start, Claudia's spark may have dulled a bit on her way to the final, but she made an impressive showing nonetheless. One of the best things about her is her sensational, exotic looks (especially the eyes) and to top it off, she is fine-tuned. I don't agree with her winning the best eveningwear award, even though the dress is elegant and suits her well, but does not necessarily make her stand out. In South America, she is my favorite only behind another delegate (more on that later).
Miss Norway, Elisabeth Wathne - When she was crowned, I did not quite see it. A pretty blonde, yes, but no Katrine Sorland. At the end of the day, she was surprisingly stylish and stood out with her own, unique look. Her performance peaked at the Miss World finals with a very nice bobbed hairstyle and an excellent gown choice. Her pure Scandinavian features are lovely and she has great stage presence. If there was a top ten, she would have been among my pickings. If there was a top ten, she is among those I'd include.
Miss Puerto Rico, Joyceline Montero- Contrary to her country's representatives in other pageants this year, Joyceline ends up being one of the most stylish, fashion-oriented contestants at Miss World. One of the things I picked up most about her is that she is very professional and polite in all of her tv appearances, and undeniably attractive. I think she fell beyond the radar for a while, but on the final night, it was that professionalism which boosted her ahead. That, and a gorgeous, flowing gown in light shades. If there was a top ten, she is among those I'd include.
Miss Greece, Vassiliki Tsekoura - Again, not a surprise but dropped a few notches after the U-Decide Program. The good thing was that a poor physique was covered by an excellent evening gown choice (very Victoria's Secret). When she came onstage and presented it, the effect was very strong and her hair and make-up choices were toned down, but still fierce enough to work with her gown.
Miss Switzerland, Bianca Sissing - Her biggest asset is a beautiful face. she practically shines and if there was a top ten, I am sure she would have been up there. If she continues on to other pageants, she should stick with the formula and will go very far.
Miss Australia, Olivia Stratton - This gorgeous Meg Ryan look-alike chose the worst possible look on the final night. she might have been able to go further, but a terrible hairstyle, unflattering evening gown and poor make-up job did her in. It was truly unfortunate to see one of my favorites crash like this. Her best look was a very natural, chic one that she had been sporting in the HMW (Hair-make-up-wardrobe) area for the previous weeks.
Miss Trinidad & Tobago, Magdalene Walcott - She has many assets, which include an excellent body, Trinidadian atti-tude, superb styling and one of the sexiest gowns in the entire pageant (if not the sexiest). Facially speaking, she is pretty but there were some other stand-outs left out. Overall, she is a pleasant addition to the top 20.
Miss Jamaica, Jade Fulford - Here is another surprise. While she had been consistently strong, her placement and capture of the Caribbean crown was quite a surprise. On the other hand, here is another girl whose peak performance came on the final night of the pageant. I love her sassy sashay down the catwalk and offbeat look. Therefore, the bright red gown suits her onstage personality quite well.
Miss Venezuela, Valentina Patruno - Here is a contestant with a fair amount of potential and facial beauty who screwed up altogether. In terms of make-up, hair and her evening gown for the night, Valentina was a disaster. On top of that, she looks like she had gained weight (Along with the delegate from Norway). Her primary saving grace is that she has a pretty face, but otherwise, she would not have had a chance to break the top ten had there been on.
Miss Lebanon, Marie-Jose Hnein - Like some of the others, Lebanon had been looking good in the past month and make some excellent choices, so it was not a surprise to see her up there. She an adorable baby face, an infectious smile and bubbly onstage personality. The pink gown and accessories are also tasteful and classy. Had there been a top ten, it would have been great to see her up there.
Miss Dominican Republic, Maria Eugenia Vargas - I have mixed feeling on this one. She is a very pretty young woman, but I feel like she was more girl-like than a lot of the other semi-finalists. Still, the evening gown is sexy and she works it well onstage. A nice choice for the top twenty.
Miss Georgia, Irina Onashvili - Moulin Roughe seems to have inspired Irina's evening gown designer. The talent winner, this amazon beauty could have easily placed on her own. Maybe a bit more vibrance would have pushed her ahead of some of the others, but a great performance for this newcomer nation.
Miss Bolivia, Helen Aponte - Here is one disappointment. The evening gown, accessories and hairstyle was unflattering and it is unfortunate to see that she looked much better in other events, with a more natural look which complements her exotic genre of beauty. In any case, it is nice to know the girls liked her.
THE NON-FINALISTS
The Americas: One expected finalist was United States. Once blown away by her evening gown presentation, in this pageant the same effect was not there. A change of hairstyling, a new dress and tanning would have done some wonder. Costa Rica makes some excellent choices and has a beautiful face, and is only hurt by her height. Uruguay is my big 'MISS' for this region. Armed with great model looks and a gown that I personally love, she is the best overall in this region after Canada and Peru. Brazil looks good, but ends up with some bad choices in the styling department which brings her down.
The Caribbean: Antigua & Barbuda and Bahamas are two very pretty, finely-polished contestants in the final. Aruba has a gorgeous face and a stylishd dress but lacks height, but still is my big 'MISS' for this region. Guadeloupe is impressive but has looked better in other events.
Asia and Oceania: For this particular region, my big 'MISS' is Hong Kong. Again, due to a lack of height, her chances may have been hurt, but she has a very pretty face and I think she looks very sweet in her gown. The other mention is for Japan, in a surprisingly modern gown and again, with a very pretty face and smile.
Africa: The big 'MISS' in this group is Uganda, although she does not look as good as I had hoped initially. Still, she is a great overall package and could have easily placed. South Africa is cute, but something seems to be completely missing from the girl we saw in Miss Universe. She simply does not stand out in the group as much as she could. Lesotho and Swaziland get honorable mentions for making a strong impression.
Europe: There are many excellent contenders not in this year's finals. Albania has great stage presence, Andorra is a knock-out, Belgium is cute and vivacious, and Russia could have made better choices but still looks great. Sweden is a big surprise with a gorgeous face. Turkey takes the cake with a high-fashion gown and some excellent runaway skills and beauty. Ukraine looks straight out of the 70's - a mysterious, haunting beauty. My big 'MISS' for this region, nonetheless, goes to Poland, who is sheer pefection.

Dublin Prepares to Welcome Miss World
December 8th: As the city of Sanya cleared up, the new Miss World headed back home to revel in her victory, despite some scathing allegations that her connections helped her win. The Miss World Organization, as well as Davison's parents, have refuted the allegations altogether, claiming that she was the clear stand-out. Andrea Roche, former Miss Ireland and Rosanna's national director, defended her delegate, claiming that she could not help who her father was.
Miss Davison and her parents were said to be on a flight from Hong Kong to London due to arrive Monday morning. It is expected they will then travel on to Dublin in de Burgh's private jet. Daddy de Burgh is said to have a personal fortune of over $60 million (U.S.)
Miss World Delegates Pack Up
It has been a beautiful month in China, and as Miss Ireland will learn about her duties and fly off to London, the remaining 105 delegates and their families, friends and supporters also say goodbye to China. On Sunday morning, the delegates exchanged their goodbyes as photographers clicked away their last photographs, before they too head home. 7th-grade students provided some musical accompaniment for the farewell, and on Chinese television, clips of the delegates' month in China were displayed with almost 'emotional' music. The delegates will certainly never forget their month in China, nor will China forget the 106 beautiful visitors. To Miss Ireland, Rosanna Davison, a new journey begins. Aside from the international press, the Irish press, not to mention the British press, has shown considerably more interest in Miss World this year after a 'local' girl was crowned. Not since Sarah Jane-Hutt, also a ravishing, unstoppable beauty, has the British Isles furnished a Miss World winner.
The coronation ball was not a place for tears or sadness. Most of the delegates drank, ate, talked and danced. It was a time to relax and let loose before saying goodbye. Miss India had ten relatives and supporters fly in, who were very excited about her placement and brang two giant Indian flags. Miss China told the press that the first thing she had to do was call her parents, who could not be in the audience with her that night. She expressed satisfaction over her placement and said that she spoke in Chinese, instead of English, because she is Chinese.

'Rahul's World of Pageants' Readers' Choice
Thanks to the hundreds of voters who chose their favorite delegate(s) for the pageant. This is the first time since 1998 that such a poll has been run here. The winners are:
Readers' Choice - Miss World: Miss Peru, Claudia Hernandez
First Runner-Up: Miss Ireland, Rosanna Davison
Second Runner-Up: Miss Venezuela, Valentina Patruno
Finalists: Miss India, Ami Vashi, and Miss Philippines, Rafaela Yunon
Semi-Finalists: Bolivia (6th), United states (7th), Thailand (8th), Uruguay (9th), and Andorra (10th)
Top 20: Aruba, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Israel, Nepal, South Africa and Vietnam
It should be noted, that votes were tabulated, allowing each person only two votes (per IP address) in the final round. Further votes were not counted to prevent bias from repeated voting.
Indeed, the Chinese reports of more judges were not untrue! Added to the list: Krish Naidoo, a leisure entrepreneur, was born in South Africa, but has been in Ireland since 1963. Among his ventures is a Dublin nightclub. Also added to the list is Ory Slonim, President of Variety Clubs International, the charity Miss World has been most affiliated with. He started out in his native Israel as the chairperson of the foundation there, and now heads the whole operation. The judges are all in China and were introduced in a press conference.
Zhou Yingqi (Angela Chow) will serve as the 3rd host for Miss World 2003. She was born in Taiwan, but completed her studies in Canada, and upon returning to Canada, led a successful entertainment career. Furthermore, she has already competed a few of the other Miss World events, such as the Xi'an Gala, Beijing Charity Event and Talent Competition, and her energy and smile are likely to make it a memorable night.

The interviews with all 106 delegates were held on Friday morning. In a radical shift, the delegates did not wear evening gowns, but casual outfits and a hand-written country nametag, to feel comfortable. In this session, they
They must choose 15 finalists, and if one of the award winners is among those 15, another delegate may have an opportunity to advance. Voting for the Miss World 'People's Choice' ends tonight at midnight, GMT. The judges were also at the final dress rehearsal to take a look at the girls in their evening gowns.
Stress will get 'em! The delegates have been working nonstop, with too little time being alloted for rehearsals. They have been practically rehearsing around-the-clock, with little time for rest. The final dress rehearsal is on Friday. The show goes out at 8 AM EST.
Miss World 2004 in Sanya? The mutual partnership between Miss World and Sanya has been a beneficial one, and Sanya authorities are ready to bid for Miss World 2004. Right now, no host venue has been finalized. Rumors about Queesnland, Australia, hosting the event have dampened, but anything is possible. Julia Morley was very pleased with this year's event, and could look forward to doing it all over again, next year.
SHOW FORMAT: The opening will feature a special line of Chinese-style dresses in which the delegates will dance for the opening. Then, they will change to evening gown for the usual parade, before announcing 20 semi-finalists, who will present their video diaries. Out of these 20, only FIVE will go on to the last round, where question and answer will be done. Out of this, the Miss World and her two runners-up will be named.
News Update (12/4/03)
Only 2 days left!
Several press conferences have been held in recent days to lead up to the event. One of them featured Azra Akin (Miss World) and Gustavo Gianetti (Mr. World). They both expressed a mutual liking, but Azra says her real boyfriend is in Turkey, not Sanya. No more travelling for this beauty! She is taking a break and enrolling in acting courses. Gustavo said that he found Sanya to be beautiful, just like his hometown in Brazil. He is there to serve as a finals judge
Riot police have been trained for the Miss World Pageant. They are often employed at sporting events to keep wild fans under control. At a beauty pageant, one can only wonder how rowdy supporters might get!

6 delegates were specially chosen to speak about China in a press conference - from left to right, China, Hong Kong, Canada, Venezuela, Poland and England (AP Photo)
Along with entertainer Bruce Forsythe and his wife, ex-Miss World Wilnelia Merced, Julia Morley conducted a press conference to show off the three beautiful winners of the Beach Beauty competition. Curiously enough, Miss Norway, Elisabeth Wathne was chosen to model a white swimsuit which will serve as the official swimsuit for Miss World 2004.
The delegates from China, Venezuela, Hong Kong, Canada, Poland and England were chosen to speak at a conference about their experiences in China thus far, and what their impression was.
Prime tables at the Miss World final have been auctioned off for over $40,000.00 each. Proceeds for various ticket sales have gone to charity.
Miss Ireland, Rosanna Davison, has gone beyond being a fan and press favorite. She is also the favorite of people who have been placing bets on her. Betting on Miss World has been going on for several decades, although its seriousness has gone downhill lately. Nonetheless, she leads the odds in most bookmakers' lists. If she wins, those bookmakers will have to pay out some serious dividends. However, if she loses, a lot of people will lose a lot of money!

News Update (12/2/03)
Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi has been confirmed as one of the artists to perform in Miss World 2003. The other artist is Bryan Ferry, who sang at Miss World 2000. Luis Fonsi will be performing after the evening gown presentation with his single 'Es lo que llaman amor', while Bryan Ferry will serenade the contestants near the end of the show with his hit 'Jealous Guy'.
Miss World judges will be here within the next couple of days to choose the finalists in private assessment. The girls wear their evening gowns and arrive in small groups, where they will be interviewed, and then will pose briefly to allow the judges to make a decision. Curiously enough, the Puerto Rican newspaper El Vocero has an interview with their delegate, where she says that once the 20 delegates are chosen and presented (like last year), they will immediately select five finalists. Of course, this could be a mistaken notion on her part, but will Miss World indeed have a top ten? We'll see in the next few days
World-Class Beauties: Gustavo Gianetti, Mr. World 2003, and Azra Akin, Miss World 2002, spend some casual moment togethers (Xinhua Photo)
The Miss World Web Site has released the list of countries who are currently leading the People's Choice voting: Albania, Australia, Brazil, India, Macedonia F.Y.R.O, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Thailand & Venezuela. Of course, this year's votes are not counted straight, but with each country getting a set number of points. So keep voting, one of these girls could make the top 20 with your help!
On Tuesday night, there was a short Christmas Party held with the close friends and family of the Miss World delegates by Julia Morley at the hotel. This is a Miss World tradition for many years, and the night was full of fun, food and lots of love for the delegates. 28 executive chefs and their assistants prepared a delicious buffet for all of those invited.
Exposure of Hainan has been great, as an influx of tourists from mainland China and abroad, particularly Asian countries, has been the result of holding the Miss World Pageant in Sanya. Approximately $12,000,000 was raked in by the host committee, including ticket sales.
The set for the final show has been set up. Currently, the stage has been done in complete shining white, with giant stones representing the famous 'Ends of the Earth' in Sanya. On the final night, jade green and gold lighting will be used to enhance the effects. British technicians are currently working round-the-clock to put on the final touches.
U-DECIDE: A Review
December 1st, 2003
Group 1
Stand-outs: Turkey, Malta
Strong: Philippines, Israel, Iceland
Group 1 is an average group and will probably produce 1, possibly 2 semi-finalists. Coming out ahead if Turkey, who is the overall package. Malta is also a personal favorite, and has confidence and is sassy. In the strong line, Philippines has the overall package and looks her best here. She is sexy and vibrant but not a classic beauty. Israel is a very pretty girl but lacks charisma and does not shine here like before. Iceland is a pleasant surprise, but possibly too boring to make an impact. Antigua is also cute and Korea and Japan are let-downs.
Group 2
Stand-outs: India, Bolivia
Strong: Aruba, Curacao, Peru
Group 2 is an strong group and could produce 2-4 semi-finalists. India leads this group, doing everything right and absolutely glowing. She is full of personality and that gets her attention. Bolivia is close behind, guaranteed a semi-finalist spot. She is slightly exotic, tall and polished and apparently a very nice girl. Coming behind them is Aruba, who has the facial beauty (one of the best faces) but not the height or presence. Its really a toss-up for her. The same goes for Curacao, who looks less pageanty here and more simple and lovely. Finally, we have Peru, who has gained a bit of weight and does not have the charisma expected of her, which does not help her to shine. Hopefully she can fix this when meeting the judges. I also can't forget Belgium and Spain, who look good and could always surprise on the final night.
Group 3
Stand-outs: Brazil, Guadeloupe, Georgia
Good: Angola, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Group 3 is an above average group and could produce 1-3 semi-finalists. First off, we have guaranteed finalist Georgia, who looks beautiful and definitely deserves that spot. She is a classic beauty. Then, there is Brazil, who wears a clean, sexy look and has a fantastic walk/presence. Another one who has been largely unnoticed is Guadeloupe, who is vibrant and has a beautiful face, very much like Zizi Lee. Also mentionable are Angola, who is quite polished, Croatia, who is sexy but did not make the best impression, and Bosnia/Herzegovina, who is also quite sexy but also doesn't leave one's mouth open. Jamaica is pretty, but seems too unpolished for a beauty queen. Nepal is also, surprisingly striking.
Group 4
Stand-outs: Venezuela, Denmark
Strong: U.S., China
Group 4 is strong for its content of SASH countries, and should expect 3-4 semi-finalists. Topping this group is Venezuela, who was weakening up since her landing in China, but in U-Decide she makes a strong impression with her gorgeous Mediteranean looks. Denmark is a wonderful surprise. In earlier events, her outfits and hairstyles were very tacky (and this may kill her chances in the end), but in U-Decide she presents the best of herself, and is the strongest Scandinavian at that point...beautiful, sexy, and full of personality. United States looks good as usual, but this program was not her strongest point. She seems somewhat flat (in a figurative sense) but should bounce back in the personal assessment. China suffers the same sickness. She does not make the strong impression I am used to from her. Still, it would be nearly impossible for her to be kept out of the top ten. Also worth mentioning are Nicaragua, who looks her best and is adorable; Hong Kong, who is tiny but has a very pretty face and charisma and Norway, who does not look her best here but will surely deliver later.
Group 5
Stand-outs: Poland, Ireland
Strong: Canada, Slovakia
Group 5 is more of an average group, with 2 guaranteed semi-finalists and the possibility of maybe 1 more semi-finalist, if at all. Topping this group is the gorgeous Poland, who may appeal more without the distinctive bangs. Equally beautiful, but not quite as impressive in this event was Ireland, another guaranteed semi-finalist. Both are in top form. Following behind them is Slovakia, who is absolutely clean-cut, well-tanned and stunning (but not quite as much as in her first photos), and Canada, another guaranteed semi-finalist who seems more characterized to represent Persia. She is tall, sultry and polished. Also worth mentioning are Lithuania, a cute, fresh European who could pull a surprise; Finland, who does not look her best here but is still somewhat of a beauty.
Group 6
Stand-outs: Ethiopia, Macedonia
Strong: Lesotho, Paraguay, Serbia&Montenegro, Zambia, Zimbabwe
Group 6 is unfortunately a below average group, but it is also pretty consistent overall and should expect about 1-2 semi-finalists. Topping this group is the stunning Macedonia, FYRO, and we could go on and on about her being tall and beautiful, but she seems to lack some brilliance in this particular event. The same seems to go for Ethiopia, who definitely loses her spot as the best African in this event. In this case, we see Africa fire up with the likes of Lesotho (Tall, confident and an excellent model but maybe too exotic), Zambia (A consistently pretty woman) and Zimbabwe (A surprise in this event, mostly because her styling is toned down). From Latin America, there was a surprise from an unphotographed latercomer: Paraguay (Tall, good-looking, and extremely polished). Serbia & Montenegro looks surprisingly polished and beautiful and sexy here, something I had not seen in earlier photos. Maybe she still has a shot?
Group 7
Stand-outs: Russia, Ukraine, Uganda
Strong: Kazakhstan, czech Republic
Group 7 is an above average group. It has the potential to produce 2-3 semi-finalists, maybe even strike it lucky. In my opinion, topping this group was the statuesque, elegant yet modelesque Uganda, who reminds me of former Miss World Agbani Darego and clearly surpassed the others as the best African delegate. Sharing the honor with her is Ukraine, who reminds me of Miss Russia 2001. She is simply sexy with offbeat looks and when she walked down the beach, my jaw nearly dropped open. Of course, that is not to belittle Russia, who has all the polish and charisma to top this group, not to mention a more conventional beauty. The surprises in this group are Kazakhstan, a teenage type with very offbeat looks who looked more polished and charismatic, and Czech Republic, an under-rated delegate who is absolutely beautiful and could easily bring her country back to the semi-finals. I also can't help but give mentions to the girls from Estonia, Romania and Chile for their looks.
Group 8
Stand-outs: Switzerland, Dominican Republic
Strong: Puerto Rico, Lebanon
Group 8 is more of an average group. It will probably produce 1-2 semi-finalists. The best one was Switzerland, whose country is not usually known for very competitive contestants, but in this case we have a very poised and polished beauty with a great body and facial beauty, above all. Behind her was Dominican Republic, who is also very pretty but needs to shine a bit more to make it. Following her is Puerto Rico, a good-looking girl who is well-polished but not highly attention-grabbing, along with Lebanon, the baby face of the competition. Also worth mentioning in this group are Guyana and Thailand, who I think could be a major surprise come the final night.
Group 9
Stand-outs: Belarus, Australia
Strong: Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa
Group 9 is a 'more or less' group to wrap it up. It has the potential to produce 1-2 semi-finalists. Ahead of the back, and this is just on a note of personal favor, was Belarus. I think this girl has been severely under-rated and is a real beauty with one of the best smiles. More realistically, it would probably go to Australia, who did not stand out as much as expected but still has that modern effect. Also looking good were South Africa and Trinidad/Tobago. I also want to mention both Holland and Moldova, who don't stand out quite as much as some others but have their own niches (Holland is a sexy beach babe, Moldova is a more of a vamp).

Miss Canada, Nazanin Afshin-Jam won the Miss World Fitness and Sporting Skill competition (AKA "BEACH OLYMPICS" and won herself a spot in the top twenty semi-finalists after going through various physical regimen tests with the other contestants. She joins Miss Ireland, Bolivia and Georgia in the top 20 list so far. It seems that against what Chinese press reports said, The winner of the Best Eveningwear Award will not be guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals. The fifth award will be the People's Choice. Nazanin is the first Canadian to advance to the semi-finals since Miss World 1989 First Runner-Up Leanne Caputo. Miss World 2003's fourth semi-finalist is 24 years old, 5'9" and was born in Iran. She is a model, actress and aspiring journalist. Thanks to my Canadian friends for this tidbit and congratulations to Nazanin.
The delegates visited a Deer Park and some other natural sites to a take a break from their tight schedules on Saturday afternoon, before the talent competition. Miss Wales celebrated her 21st birthday with a cake baked for her by Miss Philippines.
On Monday, the public of Hainan will get a chance to see the girls when they have a special parade starting from the shoreline all the way to the Miss World Crown of Beauty, where there will be a small tree-planting activitiy
Miss Malta, Rachel Xuereb might be going for the Miss World crown, but if that does not work out, her boyfriend came to propose to her yesterday, and she accepted. After the pageant, they intend to get quickly married

November 29th, 2003

Miss Georgia, Irina Onashvili won the World Talent Award on Saturday night at the Sanya Theater, beating out 18 other finalists who competed in the finals. She sang a beautiful vocal (twice, with one at the end for her victory) and will now fast-track to the semi-finals. She is Georgia's first representative ever in Miss World! Miss World's third semi-finalist is 18 years old, 5'11" and studying Law. Congratulations!
The First Runner-Up was Miss Puerto Rico, Joyceline Montero who did a crowd-pleasing magic act and the Second Runner-Up was Miss Estonia, Kristiina Gabor who performed a very energetic dance to Young Hearts, Run Free, which garnered a lot of applause.
The remaining finalists were: Antigua (Vocal, There can be miracles), Canada (Persian dance), Lithuania (dramatic monologue), Macedonia (poetry recital), India (Bharatnatyam, classical dance), Latvia (Dance), China (operatic vocal), Colombia (folk dance representing exorcism), Argentina (tango), Ireland (poetry about her experiences at Miss World), Korea (folk dance), Venezuela (flute performance), Botswana (African vocal), Northern Marianas (Pacific dance and fire spinning performance), Dominican Republic (traditional Native Indian dance) and Ethiopia (African dance). Judges were: Julia Morley, Ken Warwick (British 'Pop Idol' producer), Gustavo Gianeti (Mr. World), Bruce Forsythe (British entertainer), Mike Dixon (International music director for the show 'We Will Rock You').
Did You Know? The talent competition is not a new addition in Miss World. It has been going on for at least 25 years, although it was not always held. In 2001, the competition was judged for the first time.
MISS PERSONALITY: Miss Bolivia is voted into the semi-finals by her fellow competitors
November 29th, 2003

Miss Bolivia, Helen Aponte was named Miss Personality 2003 at the beginning of the talent programme on Saturday evening. She is now one of SIX winners to fast-track to the semi-finals (Top 20) list before the final judging takes place. The girls were given a chance to reflect who they felt was their personal favorite, and Miss Bolivia did it. Miss World's second semi-finalist is 21 years old, 6'1" tall and a model who is studying law. Bolivia has not placed in Miss World since 1995 - Congraulations!
Did You Know Miss Personality has not been awarded in Miss World since 1998, when the Seychelles' own Alvina Grandcourt took the title.
News Run-Down 11/29/03
Only one week left until the world will be graced with a new Miss World
The Talent Competition will take place tonight at the same theater where the welcome show was held a few weeks back. Apparently 20 finalists were chosen for the show out of those who rehearsed, and there will be a great diversity in talents: Romania performed Tae-Bo, Czech Republic did a gymnastic routine, Russia designed some clothes for her fellow contestants to model, Dominican Republic did a professional ballet performance, Belize and Tanzania sang, Peru performed a very traditional local dance, Ukraine recited poetry, Hong Kong performed a martial arts routine, and so forth. Make sure you check out the live web cast tommorrow, 7:30 local time.
According to the press, five special award winners will get automatic entry into the top 20 semi-finalists. Miss Ireland, who won the Beach Beauty title yesterday, is one of them. Another one is the winner of tonight's Talent Competition. Another award is the People's Choice, which is the winner of the web/telephone vote. The final of the five awards is Miss Personality, which will be voted upon by the delegates themselves. Miss World hostess Amana Byram is in China and praising Sanya for its beauty. She says she is nervous, but excited, about compering the telecast for 2 billion people. She will be joined by the New Zealand-originated host of "The Amazing Race", Phil Keoghan.
On the talent note, it has been confirmed that Miss World 2000 opening act Brian Ferry will be back this year, and the other talent of the night will probably be from Latin America.
Unsurprising Omission: Miss Armenia is no longer listed on the Miss World web site. Many people have been struggling to find a photo of this delegate in China, but it seems she never went in the first place. The exact reason can only be speculated on at this point.
Where in the world? Miss World 2004's venue has not been confirmed, despite strong indications that Queensland, Australia might be the successful bidder, which has been announced one a few ocassions. However, this comment was also heard: "It may stay here next year, it's very likely - there is a lot we can do together," Mr Morley said, adding that Chinese officials had first approached her about holding the event in Sanya. Will Miss World 2004 be held yet again in China? Julia Morley is no doubt pleased with everything in the contest, from its level of press coverage, professionalism, government support, and so forth which have made this year's edition unique.

Miss World 'Beach Babe' Is Named
November 27th, 2003
So much for 'top secret' until the final night! The Miss World organization officially announced the winners of its first-ever "Beauty Beauty" contest yesterday. The winner is Miss Ireland, Rosanna Davison, and on an interesting note, she will be given automatic entry into the semi-finals (Top 20). Ireland has not placed in the semi-finals since 1990, when hot favorite Siobhan McClafferty placed second. Rosanna is 19 years old, 5'11" and a liberal arts student.
The First Runner-Up was Miss Switzerland, Bianca Sissing and the Second Runner-Up was Miss Bolivia, Helen Aponte.
This particular award was chosen by Julia Morley, Wilnelia Forsythe (Designer of the swimsuit line and ex-Miss World), Liu Zhankun, Ken Warwick (British 'Pop Idol' Producer) and Donna Derby. The remaining semi-finalists were from: Philippines, Ethiopia, Uruguay, New Zealand, Belgium, Poland and Jamaica
Down to the Grindstone in Sanya
November 25th, 2003
The delegates have been busy shooting the U-Decide special in sites around Hainan. They will be shown in swimsuit on the beach in activities such as beach volleyball, water polo, and riding speed boats on the bay. Meanwhile, another group was busy rehearsing in a studio for the final event. The "Crown of Beauty" is ready and now the stage itself is being put together, and then the girls will begin rehearshing there. For now, they are learning a number of stage movements and have even been seen going to the restroom during shoots to practice in private.
They will be given a chance to speak in U-Decide and will state their name, career/educational pursuit and an interesting tidbit. A line of swimsuits has been created by ex-Miss World 1975 Wilnelia Forsythe, which is a change from having the girls choose their own swimwear. The swimsuits include the Miss World logo.
On Monday, the delegates handed in their applications and went through interviews with International Educationalist Dr. Colin Niven for the 'Miss World Scholarship', a special award which will be presented on the final night. 54 of the girls are presenting themselves for the award, which will allow them to receive some funding for higher education. Miss Costa Rica and Miss Swaziland were the previous winners of this award.
As the date of the pageant comes closer, the press and tourists have been pouring in to follow the remaining activities. 200 press outlets from all over the world are in China, including those from the BBC, Reuters, Associated Press and so forth. they are eagerly awaiting the first staging of a major public event in China. Meanwhile, tourists from all over have arrived to watch the pageant. One man from Hong Kong said that seeing Miss World in China was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and he brought his whole family to see the festivities and enjoy beautiful Hainan Island. Many tour operators arranged similiar packages for visitors to have some fun in the sun and watch Miss World, as well.
Julia Morley was grilled by China's top journalist, Shui Junyi, in an interview held recently, where he asked her all types of questions about the need for a Miss World and the problems of last year's edition. She of course made sure to mention the whole idea of "Beauty With a Purpose", and how she is aiming to make the pageant relevant to society. He personally has said that he has not paid much attention to the contest, and is not fond of such competitions, but realizes that the Chinese people view it much differently, and that as a means of exposure and liberal reform, the pageant has served its purpose to China.
If there is one problem that the girls have had, it is the fabulous food being served at all of the parties and banquets they have been attending. Miss Wales and Miss Peru are among those who said that sticking to a diet is a really tough thing at the pageant. There always seem to be one or two girls who come to the pageant skinny, and in a matter of a month, grow out several sizes. Indeed, the girls have generally gained a little weight on their trip, and will probably be busy working out before putting on those swimsuits. Also, after switching from freezing cold to tropical climates in a matter of days, the girls visited the special Miss World clinic to get checked up on and get treatment for the colds some of them developed on the way.
Miss World will return to British tv on Sky One after a one-year boycott. The pageant is also returning to tv in Brazil, Australia, South Africa and several other countries. Not quite as many countries, however, are opting to show the U-Decide special to be shown a week earlier.
In most of the events, to keep rehearsals simple, the girls seem to be wlaking in pairs with their respective roommates. Some of the pairings include Wales/New Zealand, India/Northern Marianas, Ireland/Canada, Malta/Turkey, Czech Republic/N. Ireland, Slovakia/Slovenia, Mexico/Nicaragua, Panama/Paraguay, China/HK, Germany, Georgia, Jamaica/Barbados, Kenya/Hungary, Macedonia/Ethiopia, Lithuania/Poland, Chile/Colombia, Uganda/Tanzania, Lebanon/Mauritius, Puerto Rico/Ecuador, Moldova/Holland, South Africa/Belarus
A surprised Aishwarya Sukhdeo from Fiji was surprised to receive an e-mail from a friend about a newspiece about her withdrawing from the Miss World Pageant. Apparently, her friend had visited some sort of Spanish tabloid about beauty pageants and translated the piece, which said that Aishwarya fell sick from food poisoning at the pageant and had to leave. Says a surprised Aishwarya "I don't know who started these rumors. I was never at the pageant to begin with!"

Review - Beijing Charity Gala
Well, the second Sunday Miss World special was just televised on Phoenix Chinese Channel, and I was glad to have viewed it. Unlike the Xi'an Celebration, there is not quite as much to say, but here goes anyhow:
The venue and decoration was very modern compared to the previous event. The large hall was set-up with tables and one gigantic table in the middle, with a special area with the charity items brought from each of the delegates' respective nations. There was quite an array of different items up, but unfortunately we did not get to see the auction itself (unless it was silent?). The opening began with the Chinese hosts speaking a bit, and then Stephen Morley himself coming to mention how big the pageant was this year and so forth. He makes an excellent Emcee, I must admit. He has taken over his father's duties after his death along with his mother. The Chinese crowds seem very reluctant to applause, from what I've seen in Miss World and both Manhunt pageants held. He actually had to beg the audience to applause a bit.
After this, we got an *edited* look at the opening walk, done in pairs down the steps as they all gathered onstage to some club beat. I actually wish they had shown the whole thing and given viewers a chance to see all the girls, but I guess not. Still, it gave me a chance to take a look at most of the girls, comments coming below. Following this, the beautiful Azra Akin was introduced wearing a peach-toned evening gown and Ms. Morley delivered a speech about the importance of "Beauty with a Purpose".
There were some more speeches by the President of the China Charity Federation and some major sponsors, and also a performance by a childrens' choir, as well as an exotic group dance performance which looked more akin to South/Southeast Asia than China. There was also a riveting vocal by a Jazz performer, so entertainment was not lacking if exposure of the girls was. The delegates spent most of the gala at their tables, speaking with the special guests in attendance. At the end of the show, there was a presentation of some awards (Probably for the largest contributions) and another colorful dance performance to the end the show.
Australia looked beautiful, as usual, in blue ballgown and the usual style. Belarus is also a very pretty girl and one of the best Blonde contestants, and always dressed tastefully. Cayman Islands was wearing a copy of the famous 'Halle Berry Oscar Gown' and looked very sweet. Miss China herself chose a very innocent evening outfit and looked her best. Czech Republic was stunning in a bright pink gown and was among the best lookers of the night. However, even more stunning was Dominican Republic, who looked more 'grown-up' in this event in a sexy black dress, the first time I've really seen her stand out in the group, one of the absolute best of the night. Gibraltar is quite cute. Holland is severely underestimated and could give some of the blondes a run for their money. Ireland is still at the top of her game, BUT her outfit leaves a lot to be desired in the taste department (The color/style and the feather-like decoration on her head). Miss Korea and Lebanon are both dressed in traditional outfits and look fantastic, especially the latter who has a lot of charisma. Lesotho looks nice and is dressed well. Macedonia looks ravishing in metallic make-up and a matching gown. She is someone to really look out for. Malta is consistent with her alluring 1970's look, and Norway also stands out in a simple black gown, although she is no Katrine Sorland. Panama is finally seen and is a cute, small girl who looks like Miss Nicaragua. Philippines and Puerto Rico are both dazzling. Slovakia and Switzerland are both impressive European beauties, but still get overshadowed too much. Uganda is one of the top 3 beauties of the night, doing everything just right and making a real 'splash' onstage in a semi-ethnic design. She is someone to watch out for as the pageant wraps up. Ukraine is also making waves with her 'Ice Princess' style, much like Miss Russia did the previous year. She is also one of few best delegates of the night. Obviously, more events are to come and I especially look forward to the U-Decide program this weekend for more information.

Welcome Back to Hainan
November 23rd, 2003
On Friday morning, there was a press conference at a large shopping center where the girls got a chance to shop for all types of little gifts. From what I could see, they looked quite engrossed in the activity, busy finding gifts for friends and family. Miss Puerto Rico commented on what a 'difficult' task the shopping activity was (I am sure she was joking).
On Friday night, there was a huge charity gala at the Great Hall of the People. There may be a special on this event, and I will bring my commentary on that later.
On Saturday at 12 P.M., the plane flew back onto Hainan Island. This time they did not fly into Sanya, but into Haikou, a seaport on the north of the island. From the 22nd to December 6th, the Hainan Island Festival is taking place and apparently 150,000 visitors are on the island to enjoy the numerous tourism events planned, such as a sand castle project and various festivals. Obviously, it was planned this year to concur with the Miss World Pageant.
At night the girls went to some Golf Resort where a special 'homecoming' party was held, simply to welcome the delegates back on the island for the final 2 weeks of the pageant.
The delegates will travel back to Sanya on Sunday and have a chance to recover from all the travelling they have been doing around China. In the coming week, they will be travelling to some of the most beautiful sites around Hainan Island, emphasizing beaches and some environmental sites. Aside from touring, they will be donning their swimsuits to tape the U-Decide special to be aired in the coming weekend and footage to be used in the telecast. There is also a talent competition coming up.

Week 2 Review
I got a chance to review newsfootage and daily coverage on Phoenix Chinese Channel and CCTV4 from this week, and here are some contestants I want to mention because they stood out.
BOLIVIA - I went back and forth with this girl, but seeing her show up in some recent coverage, it is tough to strike her when she really is one of the strongest South American contestants. It is all a matter of choosing the right outfits and styles, and currently she is making a comeback with a lot of good taste. It will really be a hit or miss with this Miss.
CZECH REPUBLIC - This is another stunner who hit me by surprise. I realized that I had totally overlooked her in the fact of two other blondes - Australia and Ireland. Nonetheless, this girl deserves as much attention as those two, she has the height, the beauty and the hair, plus she also communicates well in English and her a certain 'model' air to her.
FINLAND - This girl is an absolute doll and also fluent in English. Her porcelain features are so outstanding and she gets herself noticed more than some of the others with her extravagant hairpieces and outfits, but facial beauty could be a clincher for her to surprise. Best Scandinavian delegate.
INDIA - This girl really flew under the radar for a couple of weeks, but suddenly she has made a splash. I am not sure what she is doing differently, but she looks more radiant and practically glows in coverage from the last few days. India's prospects look better than expected.
LESOTHO - This girl has been a major surprise, and although I am not saying she will place, I think she merits more attention than she gets. She is incredibly cute and expressive on-camera and is slowly crawling up my list as one of the top African beauties in China right now.
PERU - Continues to be consistent and has the confidence, exotic factor (Mostly with the eye structure), yet she does not overdo anything and that has been a key factor to her success. Her outfits continue to be in excellent taste and she speaks excellent English, which will help her in the long run.
PHILIPPINES - In most of the highlights this week, I notice that Miss Philippines was frequently presented and has really made quite a splash. She is a very stunning young woman and knows how to grab attention. The cameras seemed to be especially stunned with her skimpy, backless outfit which she wore into chilly Xi'an, but she looked sexy in it and could be looking to go very far, especially with the level of confidence as seen when she speaks to reporters
RUSSIA - This girl has managed to blow me away since her arrival. She seems to have just about everything in the package. There are a lot of gorgeous delegates from Eastern Europe, but she has that extra polish which makes her stand out to the press. Plus, her English is perfect and that will be a plus
SOUTH AFRICA - This girl has joined India by flying under the radar and coming out of her shell on-camera a little bit more. There is no effort to be made for Cindy. She is the same, classy, intelligent delegate from the other pageant and looks much better here. Her prospects are looking much better.
UKRAINE - This girl has also been appearing on tv more and more. I don't even imagine this is a matter of being expressive, but she has this cold, stern attitude and never smiles. She wears a lot of make-up, but it all seems to be part of this packaging of 'glamour doll'. Don't underestimated.
ZAMBIA - Tall with hints of beautiful African features which stand out for her, Miss Zambia is really shaping up. She is not a highly-expressive type, but she has the right, fly-in-the-middle style which cold play well for her.
Whirlwind in Beijing
November 20th, 2003
On Tuesday at 1:00 PM, the delegates flew into Beijing for yet another stop in their China tour. Their were some festivities, of course, and a press conference was held that night at the Chang An hotel. Over one hundred reporters were there to take photos and chat with the girls. As usual, Julia Morley gave her usual speech thanking everyone and the girls helped them to plenty of the great food.
The temperatures are chilly in Beijing, and the girls were bundled up in special red winter coats for videotaping at the Great Wall of China. Snow was everywhere to be seen and the girls did not miss the opportunity to play in the snow and have some fun with snowball fights and anything else possible. There also seemed to be some sort of tree-planting activitiy nearby. At night, they returned to their hotel to see a special show.
On Saturday, November 29th, the Miss World U-Decide program will be telecast. Star Television holds contractual rights for most Asian countries for the telecast of this program and the live telecast of the finals on the 6th. Check your local listings to see when these programs will be on for you. This Sunday, Phoenix TV will be running its second one-hour special, presumedly covering the grand charity event to be held at the Hall of the People on Friday night.
Telephone voting numbers are available now on the official web site at http://www.missworld.tv. It is unknown how these votes will affect the outcome of the finals. On the one hand, it seems that an award will be given out for the Web Vote and the Phone vote, but that these votes will be converted into points to be added in to the judges' totals.
On Thursday morning, the delegates continued their tour of Beijing by visiting some beautiful historical sites, specifically: The Temple of Heaven, a peaceful, serene location where Chinese people would go to worship in centuries past; The Summer Palace, an imperial garden surrounded by a beautiful lake which was used a 'retreat' for royalty from the main palaces; Forbidden City, the residence to 24 emperors, built in the 15th century.
World Peace China and India have been involved in a war and several territorial disputes in the past century, but Miss Ching, Guan Qi and Miss India, Ami Vashi, showed reporters at a press conference that 'world peace' can exist: "China and India are all developing countries and I hope our countries will attain greatness," Qi, a budding fashion designer said. "Of course, I wish her all the best," Vashi, who hails from Gujarat said when she heard Qi's remarks. The two posed together for photos.
The 'Happy Hainan Island Festival' is an annual celebration which will run from November 22nd-December 6th. When the delegates arrive, they'd better be ready for another party! Grand-scale celebrations are planned to welcome the delegates to Sanya.
Coming up tommorrow: A review of this week's Phoenix coverage...who is looking good, who is standing out, etc.

Short Shanghai Stopover
November 18th, 2003
On Sunday morning, the delegates came to Shangha for a two-day stopover. Shanghai, one of the most important cities in China with over ten million people, is a modern, fast-paced financial hub. Miss Paraguay and Miss Panama, who were sent Promociones Gloria of Bolivia, flew in together and will join the other girls already in China. Miss Fiji disappeared from the Miss World Web Site, strangely enough. Rumors had it that she was choosing her studies over a month-long pageant.
Sunday morning/afternoon: Arrival of the delegates at the airport. No arrival reception. Girls were taken to their hotel to recuperate a bit after a hectic schedule in Xi'an
Sunday Evening: Chinese and foreign press gathered for yet another press conference, and the girls were all doing their usual poses and having fun. Miss Macedonia, FYR, just turned 19 years old and the hotel arranged a birthday cake for her to cut. It is unknown is the delegates actually ate any of the cake...just kidding!
Monday Morning/Afternoon: The delegates toured the city of Shanghai. The city is so big that it is split up into different zones. Among the places visited: Xintiandi district, which according to guides online is a tourist-geared cultural center featuring every type of restaurant, entertainment and shopping possible. There they got to visit a huge, 25,000 sq. meter shopping center. They also went to Pudong financial district, which is not exactly a tourist location, except to get some photos of these gigantic, modern buildings. Another stroll was through the historic Bund promenade, which contains some narrow old streets which can only be accessed by foot. It is a special place because it offers some of the best views of the city and the seascape.
Monday Evening: The girls went to yet another charity gala for 'the impoverished child'. Take a look at some of the photos, courtesy of SINA, from this event, where the girls auctioned off small gifts they brought from their respective countries.

Xi'an Gala: Review
November 17th
Yesterday, I was lucky enough to catch the telecast of the Xi'an gala for the delegates, this being the biggest of the three. It was held at the very large Xi'an stadium and had been planned for a month in advance, and 5,000 people packed the venue for the sold-out show. Since the Xi'an tourism ministry had poured a lot of money into the event and bringing the girls to the city, it was no surprise that the quality was excellent, in fact just as grand as many recent Miss World productions.
Unfortunately, the delegates did not come on one-by-one, but throughout the show they were continually off and onstage and it was a great chance to get a look at what a lot of these girls on television. Gowever, first a run-down of the event.
The costumery was magnificent, picked up from the centuries of Chinese culture which have passed through Xi'an. In the opening, the stage was dark, with the girls on the arms of dancers dressed as the stone soldiers which the city is famous for. An elaborately-dressed woman came onstage to sing a beautiful operatic piece, and the delegates (one group of them) walked onstage. There were several of these, and it exciting to watch the dramatics unfold with the beautiful delegates as a bonus. Everything was an absolute visual spectacle and very professional. In her speech to the spectators, Julia Morley thanked Xi'an for all they had done for her, and said that the few days she and the girls had spent their, she would never forget for a lifetime.
Azra Akin, the reigning Miss World, looked radiant and had a chance to get a victory walk in a stunning orange and ivory evening gown, and her walk was in fact to the song 'Victory', performed by a few local performers as the girls danced a bit. The most spectacular portion of the night was the grande finale, where the stage was electrified with all types of performers converging, with the delegates lip snynching and swaying to the music. The whole thing was mind-blowingly of Olympic proportions, and it makes one wonder how much money was in fact spent just to celebrate having the Miss World delegates for a few days in their ancient city.
Of course, I was not just watching the show for its artistic value. Like any other pageant fan, I was scanning the screen to get a look at as many of the contenders as possible. Here are some of the ones I wanted to comment on:

The Girlz
Andorra - Looked gorgeous with her hair down and in a black lace gown. May need more presence, but definitely looking good. Not to be overlooked.
Angola - Great onstage in a gold evening gown, not very tall but love the face and the girl has atti-TUDE. I don't think it makes her a greater contender in this pageant, but I just needed to mention it! :)
Australia - Just a natural beauty from the start. Always chooses simple fashions which accentuate the eyes and hair, and upholds the importants aspects of remaining classy, dignified and poised onstage. The Miss World crown would look very nice on that head...
China - Sash or no sash, this girl is the best Asian delegate. Aside from being tall, she is well-dressed and has great stage presence, that department she continually manages to overshadow the other girls from the region.
Ecuador - Looking sensational in a simple flowy purple dress, Mayra has the height and stage presence and the exotica. What the dress also showed was that some more physical training may be in order.
Guadeloupe - One of the tiniest girls, this Caribbean gem has been seriously overlooked. She has one of the most beautiful faces and smiles and has some good taste in all aesthetic departments. Height could hurt her, but if Nicole Rita-Ghazal coulds make it with facial beauty and lack of height, why not this girl?
India - I have been asked about her, and the truth is that I am not sure wear she stands. On the one hand, she has the training to make herself stand out, but the curly hair was a mistake and the clothes not very flattering. She still has some possibilities, but they are just not as great as I had hoped before she arrived.
Ireland - The most beautiful blonde. She has always been a favorite of mine and does not overdo anything onstage (A plus point here), but I think she needs to 'kick it up a notch' with her look if she wants to grab attention, which I did not see last night
Peru - Ravishing as usual in a simple white gown. I often sidelined her as a lesser version of Marina Mora, but in all the photos and onstage yesterday, she has made herself distinct and could even be looking forward to a crown. She does, however, come off a bit stronger than Mora onstage in terms of presence, but that could hurt her, as well.
Russia - I was not ga-ga over this girl 3 years ago, but her transformation is incredible and she has the onstage air of a seasoned competitor, dressed to go in her 'disco ball' nightmare from 2000, yet she exudes the right type of unassuming poise. Needless to say, she gets seen and she will hopefully make a better choice for the final night.
Scotland - As good as, if not better than last year's delegate. She was not very commanding onstage, but leaves the same impression as Uruguay...something a Miss World panel could pick up on: Class and composure.
South Africa - Her placing in Miss Universe created a lot of buzz, but I can not say that she has left the impression on me I hoped for, as she is often overshadowed by a lot of other gorgeous girls who stand by her in the events, and the Xi'an celebration was no exception. I don't think her feat at Miss Universe can be repeated here.
Uganda - Statuesque, with the right mix of exotic and outstanding in a gold African-themed dress. She has been consistent but I don't know if it is what the judges will go for.
Uruguay - A real sleeper, she has a news anchor-cum-model look to her, but she is superb onstage and could get attention from judges who are not easily impressed by dominating stage attitude. Again, that is why I call her a sleeper but MW judges have often gone for a lot of 'sleepers'
Venezuela - Who can leave out Venezuela? In a sequined orange gown, she looked fantastic as usual, and stands out enough to possibly make the top ten again with luck. Overall, she has proven herself worthy, but there are a lot of other countries with equally beautiful representatives who are being ignored by fans who declare her the absolute winner.
Those are my comments from the gala. Again, a disclaimer that I only mentioned some girls at this point but will be making more comments later on. There are

Tang Party in Xi'An...Girls Go On Tour
November 14th, 2003
The girls are having fun in Xi'an. In the last couple of days, I caught some great news coverage on Phoenix tv of their activities.
The party on Wednesday night was done in traditional Tang style, with people specially designated to wear costumes and set the decorations to fit the theme. A giant Miss World 'birthday' cake was made with the famous pagoda on top. At the left, you can actually see Azra Akin surprised by the size of the thing, before cutting it
The weather in Northern China is strikingly different from that of Sanya and Hong Kong. As can be seen in the gala photos, the girls opted for jackets and sweaters and scarves instead of mini-skirts. In Beijin, which is coming up on their tour, there was even some snow recently.
On Friday during the day, the girls went to visit the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses in various sites. I got a glimpse of a lot of the girls, some who looked happier than others. I noticed that some of the Latin-Caribbean contestants always seem to be getting in shots together. In this group is Curacao (who is better than photos and very vivacious), Aruba (Still one of the most beautiful faces but not very tall), Venezuela (Just a good-looking girl who did not seem as dolled-up as usual), Argentina (Cute, small girl) and Bolivia (One of the duskier Latinas, although I have mixed feelings about her now).
Some of the other girls who caught my eye included: Australia (The chic hairstyle and smile are her best assets), Ethiopia (The most beautiful African girl who only caught my eye once on tv), Armenia (Not quite as vampy as expected, but def. a beauty) as well as Croatia (Absolutely gorgeous girl, one of the best in a strong Eastern European group with very distinctive eyes). Of course, there were plenty of other beauties to look at, but those are just some that stuck in my head for now. I will be posting captures of the girls for you guys to judge, as well.
On Friday night, their was more traditional celebration, with centuries-old dance and song performances, followed by a parade of the delegates onstage in the theater. After this was over, the charity banquet continued in another room, where local bigwigs had a chance to sit down and mingle with the delegates. Miss Dominican Republic is not ravishing as I expected, but more adorable and girl-like in her look. Miss Venezuela is simply consistent and classy in her styles, and I also struck by Miss Guadeloupe, who joins the Venezuelan in being shorter but one of the more facially beautiful delegates.
The delegates, along with their tour of the city, got a chance to sample some authentic Chinese food. Of course, it was amusing to see the adorable Miss Belize manuevering with her chopsticks, and to see the reactions of the girls as they consumed some things, although Miss Cayman Islands was pleasantly surprised. Stunning stand-out in this group, Miss Puerto Rico, Joyceline Montero, talked about the differences between Chinese food in Puerto Rico and China, saying that what she had eaten in Puerto Rico was geared towards local taste, but she was enjoying the cultural experience. I also caught a glimpse of Miss Guyana (Great smile) eagerly trying to get information out of the local tour guides.
Azra Akin can not believe the size of the Miss World 'birthday' cake!

Welcoming Celebration in Xi'an
November 13th, 2003
The girls arrived in Xi'an this morning for the third city in their Chinese tour. The total number of girls is still 100% confirmed, but on the Miss World site, the countries of American Virgin Islands, Austria and Turks & Caicos have been removed, leaving 108 contestants who will take part in the competition. Panama (Ivy Ortega) and Paraguay (Karina Butnet) will make their arrivals today in China to join the other delegates.
Celebrations are a part of Miss World delegates' arrival in each city. Xi'an is no exception. It is a more traditional city, but the girls will be splitting up into two groups for shootings tommorrow throughout the city, to be used in the Miss World telecast on December 6th. Most people will have heard of the famous army of Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses which was created for a symbollic purpose. That will be prominently featured on the show itself.
The girls are in Xi'an for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, and fly out on Sunday morning to their next destination. Using my translation service, it seems that the first night's event has something to do with the historical aspect of the city, Friday night's event is another charity gala as is Saturday's, but the one on Saturday is called a 'literary party' (I assume this has to do with illiteracy). The exact voting system is unclear, but changes are obvious. One is that the web vote, for whom an award will be given on the 6th, you must pay for allocations of ten votes each. Registered Miss World members may also go to the site and use their ten free votes, which I did yesterday for a few of my favorites at the moment. There will also be SMS voting, but I am unsure how that will play into final judging, except that their will be a Viewers' Choice or something for that vote, as well.
Apparently, the winner of either the Web Vote or Viewers' Choice (I am not 100% sure which one, or if it is a combination of both) will get an automatic spot in the 20 semi-finalists.
Apparently there was no giant press conference in Sanya, but what actually happened on Wednesday was that the girls donned their swimsuits and hit a private beach. Swimsuit shootings are always part of Miss World, but I imagine that there will be more when they come back from their tour. The girls practiced an ancient form of Chinese meditation on the beach before starting some activities and enjoying their free time, but even on the private beach, locals came out to get a glimpse of the beauties - no surprise!
Most of the girls have been photographed in China, and it is great to see what they look like without studio hair and make-up and airbrushing, where it is easy to manipulate things. These are just my first impressions on the photos in the Chinese press so far, as well as coverage of pageant events on the Chinese channel Phoenix TV, without getting into heavy detail or analysis:
The ones who looked good before and still look good: Aruba, Australia, China, Georgia, Ireland, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda, USA and Venezuela
Surprises: Gibraltar, Greece, Guadeloupe, Holland, Korea, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malta, Portugal, Scotland, Turkey
Disappointments: Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Curacao, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Zambia
Of course, more photos are to come and maybe these opinions will change around yet again. It is too early to start making final lists, but one thing is for sure...it is very competitive!

Sanya Activities
November 12th, 2003
After the girls were given the proper welcome and were escorted to their hotel, it was time to relax and get ready for their first formal event, an evening banquet in their honor. Miss World President Julia Morley was granted a key to the city and made a speech, expressing her happiness over the professionalism of the organizers and their willingness to make an extra effort. Some other officials also gave their own speeches, and aside from an acrobatic performance, there was also plenty of food for the girls to enjoy. One-by-one, the girls made their appearance onstage to the specially-invited guests, a highlight being the reigning Miss World, Azra Akin, being taught martial arts.

Goodbye Hong Kong, Hello Sanya
November 11th, 2003
It was fun, but the delegates left Hong Kong to arrive at Sanya today, November 11th, at 12:30 local time. Once the girls were greeted, local staffpeople and schoolchildren garlanded them as they were taken to the Miss World opening ceremonies. Among the arrangements was a military band and the famous 'dancing lions' act. The people are very excited in this island, where even taxi drivers have been practicing their English in anticipation of the Miss World delegates. Hong Kong Activities
November 10th, 2003
As it appears that pretty much all of the girls who are going to attend are in Hong Kong, there are 105 delegates registered in China as of Sunday night. The expected no-shows include Turks & Caicos, American Virgin Islands, Austria, Panama and New Zealand. Confirmed information is still being awaited on the full list of delegates. In the meantime, the girls began their first activities on Sunday in Hong Kong, gathering for a sort of press and welcoming ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square, where Sanya's mayor was in attendance. The Chinese press obviously favor China and Hong Kong, but many other girls were photographed as well. Following that, they boarded buses to take a tour of the city, and the locals were more than excited to see the delegates. They toured Qingma Bridge, and looked through a Chinese pavilion, a popular shopping street and an ancient temple.

On Monday, the delegates went early on to Victoria Peak, the highest point in Hong Kong. Aside from being a center of natural beauty, the trip is especially worth it, because at the top of the peak, there is an uniquely-shaped structure in which visitors can climb to take themselves to a breathtaking view of the entire city. Later on, there will be a special United Nations Refugee Charity Banquet. Government officials, diplomats, the consul and business leaders will be meeting with the delegates, and it will be televised on Phoenix tv.

* Tidbits *
November 8th, 2003
Case of cold feet It appears confirmed that Miss Austria, Tanja Duhovich has backed out of the Miss World Competition last minute, fearing that she will not win the title. The national director is making an effort to have a delegate ready last-minute, and the expected girl is Jasmin Molnar, First Runner-Up in the pageant.
Are they dressed or not? Many of the delegates seemed troubled about how well-dressed they would be for differing reasons.
While Miss Puerto Rico, Joyceline Montero had an official session to present her wardrobe, others were not quite as
lucky. Miss Barbados, Raquel Wilkinson mentioned that she still had not gotten an evening gown or any of her promised
cash prizes. Miss Australia, Olivia Stratton tried to be be as kind as possible while pointing out that her local
organizers had stuck the wardrobe bill on her, and some designers did come forward for her when she made a plea. However,
perhaps the most heartbreaking story was that of Miss Botswana, Boingotlo Motlalekgosi, whose wardrobe was stolen from
her flat recently, including her finals gown. Due to a lack of sponsors, she had to make some quick arrangements to have
clothing for the pageant. She was given a special farewell at the airport by the Botswana Football Team.
ArrivalsMost of the delegates will have arrived by Saturday, November 8th. The respective press in individual countries have been
interviewing the girls. While Miss Venezuela had a huge departure blitz and is confident about her chances to become Miss
World, some other delegates are apathatic. Says Miss Italy, Silvia Cannas: ""Excited? Not that much. It will surely be
an important experience, which will help me grow, and, independently of the outcome, I hope to represent my country
decorously - I don't expect anything from this contest. I just want to have fun and undergo new selection during which I will
meet new cultures. My dream is that of graduating as soon as possible and then become actress..." For her part, Miss
India, Ami Vashi left Mumbai on Thursday night. She says that she is confident, and does not feel any pressure. Her final
evening gown is yet again designed by Hemant Trivedi and the Sheetal Design Studio, while her other ensembles are from
different designers or labels. Prior to leaving, she participated in a special event with street children.
Action Man The organization in London is negotiating to have Chinese film star Jackie Chan as either a finals judge or guest of
honor at the telecast. More news to come soon
The Sanya government has asked people to stop chewing Betel nut, because of the reddish spit stains around the city which
they are currently cleaning up prior to Monday's delegate arrival to the city; Meanwhile, 80% of the tickets for the final have been sold. $2,000,000.00 U.S. are expected in revenue from ticket sales alone. The
Crown of Beauty stadium is ready, and is being prepared to hold an exhibition on the Miss World Pageant inside for curious
visitors

China Opens its Doors Up to Beauty November 1st, 2003
The hosting of the 2003 Miss World Beauty Pageant in Mainland China is not just a spectacle, but of great political importance as well. The People's Republic of China traditionally frowned upon beauty contests. Apart from the recent years, the only other representative was Pan Tao in Miss World 1994, a beautiful young woman whose origins and whereabouts are unknown to this day. During the late 90's, there was an increasing interest in modelling competitions, which were sanctioned by the government, and one of the most prestigious of them all, the New Silk Road Model Contest, obtained a franchise to Miss World in 2001, sending the young Li Bing to Sun City, South Africa, to a frenzy of publicity. Li, a model from East China's Jiangxi Province, did make some major mistakes in her communication, but still finished fifth overall in the contest. Upon her homecoming, the Chinese press was eager to speak with Li Bing about her experiences and discuss the possible change in China's attitude towards beauty pageants, because in reality, she had not officially won any beauty contest.
In 2002, China began its exposure to more female beauty pageants such as Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Earth. In the meantime, the provincial government of Sanya, a resort city on the offshore island of Hinana, sent its representatives to London to speak with Julia Morley and the Miss World staff about bringing the international competition to China. Several visits were made China by Miss World representatives throughout 2002, where Julia Morley expressed her satisfaction with the beauty of the area and the organization of the New Silk Road Model Competition in that very city. Emerging victorious in the contest was Ying-Na Wu of Hainan, an aspiring interior designer. However, things were much different for Ying-Na than Li, with authorities becoming more open to pageantry and the state-sponsored media showing more support to Ying, who also finished fifth in the controversial 2002 Miss World Pageant. More importantly, the end of the Miss World telecast highlighted the signing of the host venue papers, major tourist landmarks in China and a message welcoming viewers back next year to Sanya. Major Chinese and international press outlets reported the news...China would host Miss World 2003.
In 2003, yet another possible hurdle came up, with the SARS crisis breaking out in Asia, most powerfully in China. In the summer of 2003, the organization was mentioning the possibility of moving the pageant to another location, but eventually the crisis died out, allowing the pageant to move on as planned. Everything is set for the 2003 Miss World Pageant, and everyone involved hopes for nothing of the sort of last years dilemma, which included mentions of disorganization and financial woes from the organizers. Chinese and international press have been invited and provided with special facilities to cover the event. The beautiful five-star Sheraton Sanya Resort will play official host hotel for the pageant, due to its incredible reputation, as well as its private beach along the Yalong Bay and proximity to local villages. The multi-million dollar Miss World Crown of Beauty is almost done construction and will illuminate what was once a desert-like area into a picturesque setting with an artificial lake and installed greenery in the area. All that is needed is a group of contestants... |
