December 10th in beautiful and tropical Sanya, China!

The 55th finals of the Miss World Pageant will be held for the third-year in sunny Sanya, China, as over 100 of the planet's most beautiful women gather to compete for the title currently held by Maria Julia Mantilla of Peru. This year, more changes are expected, as President Julia Morley seeks to continually revamp the show to keep it up-to-date.

    COLOR COMMENTARY...PRODUCTION

Chinese Opening Sequence: If we were impressed by the Olympic-style Chinese presentations at the beginning in 2003 and 2004, this one truly took the cake. Sparks flying off, giant video screens showing fire in the background as tradition met the present in a combination of intense Chinese dancers, setting their pace to an all-female group of Bond-type Chinese musicians, who match the intensity with their performance. All this is topped off by a spectacle of costume and drama with the presence of Chinese opera actors. This segment was absolutely heart-racing.
Delegates in Swimwear: Third time was the charm for this section as well. After a beautiful and elegant quipao presentation in 2003, a more modern swimsuit dance in 2004, this year we saw a dramatic change in the lighting concept, dance moves and pace of this segment. It was obvious as the European delegates appeared in the blue backdrop and began moving to the pace of the instrumental-techno background. The girls did an excellent job with the dance moves, each group with their own unique presentation style. My particular favorite was the Asian-Pacific group's presentation.
Nostalgia: These were no ordinary judges. After a quick historical clip showing the judges' respective crownings, we were led back onstage for a another quick look at these ex-Miss World's, who walked down the runaway another time. Now, why didn't Miss World do this in 2000 when it had a huge group of ex-winners present for the reunion?
Gowns: For the next large portion of the pageant, we were introduced to the delegates, in six groups, with quick gown presentations, followed by the announcement of the semi-finalists in that respective group and a quick word with them, followed by clips from their "Vote for Me" presentation. The musical background was virtually the same in each group, but you could make out local elements introduced to match the girls...steel drums in the Caribbean group, Western instrumental music in the European groups, a Latin beat for the America's, et al. One noticeable difference between 2004 and 2005 was lighting...while 2004 preferred pure white, 2005 used a variety of light pastel colors. I suppose it added to the flavor of the pageant. Another high point was that styling and make-up was much cleaner and complementary to the girls than in 2003 and 2004, leaving more of the girls looking their best.

Performances I: During the eveningwear portion of the pageant, we saw performances from Alexander O'Neal and the peacock dancers. The first song done by Alexander O'Neal was too 1980's for my tastes, so not in my opinion something to highlight. However, if the opening number was intense with Chinese culture, this showcased the rhythmic, graceful and elegant side of it, utilizing minimalistic elements to capture the emotion of the piece. Once again, true eye-candy and an example of what Beijing may showcase in the 2008 Olympics.

Fast-Track Finalists: With the 12 semi-finalists announced, the group was closed out with the final 3 winners named. The video-clip for the Beach Beauty competition was more sweet and to the point than last year's and 2003. For the talent segment, we saw some true creativity, with each of the five finalists being taken to a complementary setting to perform her piece. These clips were shot in Cinema format for a dramatic effect and were amazing. In some versions of Miss World with no commercials, the full-length of these clips are available during those breaks.

Beauty with a Purpose: There's no denying that Miss World does not tend to do much to showcase its reigning queen during the telecast, usually just a short walk and question at the end of the pageant. However, this time, Maria Julia Mantilla was done justice with a beautiful montage showcasing her activities through the year...she will surely not be forgotten. This was followed by yet another heart-jerking montage of Miss Korea's diverse charitable activities, which won her that final spot in the semi-finals.
Goodbye, Sanya!: Compared to the more conventional tourism spots in Miss World 2003-2005, this was done in a more music video style and shot in Cinema, which in my opinion, enhances the appeal, especially from a tourism perspective. It reminded me of the stunning montages when Miss World delegates went to Malta and the Maldives.

Finalists Group: The moment of drama came quickly and swiftly...hearts raced as each continental Miss World was crowned. In some ways, this moment was even more dramatic than the actual crowning!
Performances II: With the crowning moment nearing, an appropriate setting was created with something more soulful by Alexander O'Neal ("If You Were Here Tonight"). This year, surprisingly, the non-finalists were not onstage to accompany the final performance...so, no bitter and disappointed expressions!
Finale: After some chitchat with the ex-Miss World's and a short profile review of the six finalists, they got their final chance to parade onstage. As we have seen in recent years, the drama culminated with the crowning of Unnur Birna and her two princesses, followed by a shower of gold onstage and the traditional festivities of the girls onstage.

    PAGEANT COUNTRIES OF THE FUTURE

  • With the completion of the world's two large pageants, Miss World and Miss Universe, certain countries have tasted sweet victory: Puerto Rico (3rd in MW, 2nd in MU), Mexico (2nd in MW, 4th in MU), and Canada (Winner in MU, SF in MW). Within 3 years of the change in direction in Canada (both licenses changed hands), it has had a Miss World 1RU and SF, and a Miss Universe winner and SF. This was an incredible improvement upon the dismal record of Canada in the past. For Lupita Jones, director of Mexico, it has breathed new life and halted critics of her pageant functioning. After a dismal performance in the 1990's, Mexico is back in the last 2 years with a MW 1RU and SF, and a MU 3RU and SF. Puerto Rico has continued its escalation of success in MU from the 1990's, but after a long drought in Miss World, it has been back with a major local directional change, which has seen a 2RU and 2 SF in the last 4 years.
  • Still on that list:
Dominican Republic (Since 2003, MU Winner and 3RU, MW 1RU and SF), Nigeria (Since 2001, a MW Winner and 2 SF), Philippines (Since 2002, 2 MW 4RU and MW SF), Peru (Since 2003, a MW Winner, 2RU, SF and 2 MU SF), Russia (Since 2001, 4 MW SF), and Jamaica (Since 2003, 2 MW SF).
  • Next Stop Is...
  • The Miss-Big-Favorite-Who-Didn't-Place Award goes to . . . Costa Rica! Indeed, although Leonara Jimenez gave an amazing presentation, she was beaten out by two other strong delegates in the America's group. Previous winners of this award: Christianne Balmelli (Chile 2001), Lola Alcocer (Spain 2002), Karolina Gorazda (Poland 2003), and Nikalaya Dullaya (Thailand 2004). Welcome to ther club, Leonara!

    COLOR COMMENTARY: RESULTS

  • Iceland (Unnur Birna)
  • Mexico (Dafne Molina)
  • Puerto Rico (Ingrid Rivera)
  • Italy (Sofia Bruscoli)
  • With most fans undecided beforehand on the African group, and eyes set on the delegates from Namibia, South Africa and Nigeria, I was pleasantly surprised to see my personal favorite, Tanzania (Nancy Sumari) take the Miss World African title. I have had my discontent over some of Miss World's African choices in the past: Nigeria over the fashionable Angola in 2004, the exclusion of Uganda in 2003, Ghana in 2002 and Zimbabwe in 2001. For me, Nancy has it all...an incredible face and superb fine-polishing as can be seen by her flawless skin, hair, make-up and presence. Besides that, a sexy black gown which complemented her well. She represented the women of Africa confidently during her two opportunities to speak onstage, displaying strong control over poise, diction and her nerves! I would, however, preferred to have seen her in a runner-up spot over Puerto Rico and Mexico.
  • One of the biggest shockers of the night was the victory of Oh Eun-young (Korea), a delegate very few fans noticed in the Asian Pacific group. However, in her defense, I would say that she looked much better onstage than I ever imagined. She presented a sweet, demure, traditional personality but you could also tell she was no country belle, either. After winning the Miss World Asian-Pacific title, Miss Korea humbly accepted, but admitted that she wanted to be known less as a beauty queen, but more as a professional young woman. SEMI-FINALISTS:

ICELAND BAGS THIRD MISS WORLD CROWN

Miss Iceland, Unnur Birna, was crowned Miss World at approximately 10:00 pm in Sanya, China on December 10th, beating out 101 other delegates for the crown. Unnur is 21 years old, 5'9" tall, and finishing up studies in Anthropology so that she can continue onto Law school and become a lawyer. Recently, she spent time working as an airport cop. She is the third Icelandic woman to win the title, following in the footsteps of Hofi Karlsdottir (1985) and Linda Petursdottir (1988). The only other times Iceland has placed in Miss World were in 1983, 1984 and 1987.

    FINISHING TOUCHES FOR PAGEANT

  • During the dress rehearsals for Miss World held on November 9th, Miss Australia, Dennae Brunow, was crowned the mock winner. Obviously, this tends to play little significance considering Nepal in 2003 and Canada in 2004 were also chosen mock winners. Among the finalists: Guadeloupe, Mexico, England, Trinidad & Tobago, Italy, Indonesia and South Africa
  • The format is similiar to last year's event. The final set will follow the recent frenzy over simple, modern backdrops with video screens and lighting to accentuate the girls. Hints of icy white and blue all over.
  • The opening number will be another spectacle of Chinese culture, featuring performers of Szechwan Opera and the famous Peking Opera, as well as a group of government-sponsored dancers, and a group of female violinists.
  • This will be followed by the delegates' opening presentation. As with last year, it is confirmed the opening number will be a modern spectacle done in beachwear, with a hint more of a fashion show-type feel to it.
  • The delegates will all present themselves in eveningwear, as has been tradition in Miss World since 1997.
  • The former Miss World's who will be judging at the pageant will this time get a chance to come onstage. They took part in the rehearsal.
  • The throne has been a fixture in Miss World...this year, it looks like a shaped metal chair, ultra-modern design.
  • Alexander O'Neal is expected to sing two songs during the night: "Saturday Night Love" and "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On"

    Predictions

Miss World 2005: Italy - Sofia Bruscoli

    9. American Virgin Islands - Kmisha Counts (Talent)

Commentary: Pageant Politics and the Crown

In the world's two major pageants, Miss World and Miss Universe, pageant politics is always a factor...what type of image do they want, where do they want to go, what audience do their want to attract, where will they get the best payoff? Although we'd like to believe all is fair, that would simply be unrealistic. Pageants stay alive if the winners they choose fit into the pageant politics goal.

So, that being said, what is Miss World looking for this year?

  • No surprises here A look at the last 7 or 8 Miss World's gives you an idea that in that span, no winner has been a real surprise. These were all delegates that I could see were making their way towards a Miss World crown, especially Rosanna Davison and Maria Julia Mantilla, almost custom-built for the pageant...and yes, included in that list is Linor Abargil!
  • That being said, some assumptions have to be made. The first being that Black and East/SE Asian women are less marketable from a business standpoint, and therefore less appealing to be crowned. Miss World is not expected to really go into either group this year, with one exception: Philippines (Carlene Aguilar), who may in fact be part of a greater marketing strategy altogether. As for the two Asian powers, China is simply not beautiful enough to be crowned and Miss World is changing its strategy, and India is a market Miss World has already dealt with.
  • The next question is, can Miss World have back-to-back Latin American winners? Its not out of the question. The battle for this would be led by Costa Rica (Leonara Jimenez). Although there are some other stunning Latin American delegates, she seems to be the only likely possibility at this point.
  • ...and that leaves us with Europe! So we begin with Iceland (Unnur Vilhjálmsdóttir). What is she lacking? Icelandic beauties are famous worldwide, and her looks are truly international. She could be part of an image which is seeking more of a sexy, trendy model type for this year...and if thats the case, can we really overlook Italy (Sofia Bruscoli)?. She is likewise an Elite model, the young, fresh and natural type Miss World loves, and probably holds an edge over Iceland.
  • Although Northern Europe is led by Iceland, there are two other beauties who look like they could fit into that crown: Russia (Yulia Ivanova) and Switzerland (Lariane Gillieron), the latter with the better option of winning.
  • Although Southern Europe is led by Italy, there are other beauties who stand a chance. One incredible surprise is the stunning Moldova (Irina Dolovova) who pulled a shocker in the "Beach Beauty" competition, and has suddenly moved up to this special group. Of course, that isn't enough to go on...her aesthetic qualities, esp. her having one of the most beautiful faces in the whole group, puts her ahead.
  • Predictions for main crown contenders group: Philippines (Carlene Aguilar), Costa Rica (Leonara Jimenez), Canada (Ramona Amiri), Iceland (Unnur Vilhjálmsdóttir), Moldova (Irina Dolovova), and Switzerland (Lariane Gillieron).

    Commentary: NORTH EUROPE GROUP

  • This region is clearly the one with the highest-quality contestants. Despite the high level of beauty, it seems to have come down to a handful of girls to take the remaining two spots in this region
  • Beach Beauty That's the prize picked up by the fortunate Russia (Yulia Ivanova), who is now automatically part of the semi-finalists group. Yulia is stunning and could come in as a second-rung delegate to take the continental prize, but in the meantime, the lead contender is:
  • Iceland (Unnur Vilhjálmsdóttir), a sexy Scandinavian beauty who oozes with style, radiates with her great tan, and has one of the most aesthetically appealing faces in the entire pageant. Unnur is ready to bring Iceland back to the semi-finals after a long time. She is in the lead to take the continental title, and if Miss World wills it...she could be battling for that ultimate crown!
  • British babes are on the loose in Sanya...while all eyes have been on England, my personal favorite is Northern Ireland , the most incredible representative from her small land. Also in contention are Scotland AND Wales, not to mention the other British Isles beauty, Ireland.
  • Switzerland

    Commentary: SOUTH EUROPE GROUP

  • Italy, Moldova and Spain are the main contenders in this group
  • Italy (Sofia Bruscoli)
  • Spain (Mireia Verdu)
  • Moldova (Irina Dolovova)

    Commentary: CARIBBEAN GROUP

  • This region is the smallest, having sent only 11 delegates this year. However, almost all of the contestants are of high quality and can not be 'written off' from a Miss World standpoint.
  • Golden Voice Its already been a lucky stint at Miss World for (American Virgin Islands) Kmisha-Victoria Counts, who picked up the Talent prize and already is one of the semi-finalists. It is doubtful, however, that she will ultimately win the Caribbean's continental finalist slot.
  • After seeing photos onstage from the dress rehearsal, I believe one of the fierce contenders for the Caribbean title is Trinidad & Tobago (Jenna-Marie Andre) and the other is Puerto Rico (Ingrid Rivera)
  • Jamaica (Sharelle Griffith) is the other strong possibility.
  • Bahamas (Ordain Moss) has surprised us from her initial photos, but is not likely to place

    COUNTDOWN BEGINS: HOSTS, PERFORMER NAMED

  • Previous it had been announced that Angela Chow of Phoenix TV would continue in her third year as the hostess of the pageant. This year, there will be no secondary hostess, and she will be accompanied by Welshman entertainment reporter Tim Vincent, who currently works on the show "Access Hollywood". The 33 year-old is best known for his years of experience hosting on British television.
  • Old is Gold...Miss World has confirmed the primary performer as Alexander O'Neal. He is expected to perform at least 2 numbers throughout the night, like Lionel Richie the year before him.
  • The former Miss World's and Maria Julia Mantilla hit a shopping centre in Sanya on Wednesday to be greeted by excited locals.

  • Commentary: AMERICA'S GROUP

  • Unfortunately, the America's group is the weakest of all 6 groups this year. Despite that, a handful of gems have floated to the top and will make fierce contenders in the overall competition.
  • She's unstoppable! Costa Rica (Leonora Jimenez) was making waves among fans months before setting foot in China...why? She is a 6' supermodel who visually captivates. She has looked near-perfect during her entire month. Like Canada, was a finalist in both fast-track events and invited to a couple of press conferences. She is the hottest contender for the America's continental title by far, and could make it a back-to-back for Latin America for the ultimate crown.
  • East meets West No one ever doubted her potential - Canada (Ramona Amiri) has lived up to and beyond expectations. She combines the exotic look of her heritage alongside Western pageant polishing. There is word out she could win "Beauty with a Purpose" - leaving a spot open in the group for one more to slip in. Much like Australia/Trinidad & Tobago in 2004, Ramona was in the T5 of both Beach Beauty and Talent, and has already been invited to a couple of press conferences. I don't believe she can beat Costa Rica to the continental title, however, but she seems like a lock on the semi-finalist spot.
  • Is there room for us? Two delegates are waiting behind in the line: First of all, a real surprise in Sanya has been Brazil (Patricia Reginato), who has revealed a more softer and feminine look than in prior photos. This girl has the presence factor down and was one of the finalists in Beach Beauty. She could very well be contending for the other spot.
  • the other top bet is Mexico (Dafne Molina) shows us that despite fading into the background at some points during the month, she has made a big comeback in the recent Beach Beauty competition and "Vote for Me" specials, looking fashionable and simply stunning all-round. If Canada picks up the final fast-track, she will contend with Brazil for the other America's spot.
  • Appreciated, yet little Noticed There are handful of other delegates who have looked great throughout. A surprise beauty is El Salvador (Alejandra Carcamo), who is refreshingly beautiful, naturally-styled delegate from her country, although her presentation in "Vote for Me" was more humorous than perky. Also surprising is Guatemala (Maria Ines Galvez), who has a great face and body and has been every bit polished and modern. If Central America continues to send delegates like this year's batch, we will see more semi-finalists. Peru (Fiorella Castellanos), while attractive, has failed to come up to the high standard set by her three predecessors and will be fighting harder to place.
  • SUMMARY: America's QOB - Costa Rica, AM Semi-Finalist - Canada, Key Alternates - Brazil, Mexico

    Commentary: AFRICAN GROUP

  • There is no doubt that Namibia (Leefa Shiikwa) has been the most often-mentioned delegate for Africa's Queen. However, I do not personally think she is as much of a shoo-in as is expected. In some angles, she is definitely unpolished, and her presentation indicates the same. Nonetheless, she has the right packaging to make it. There are many strong contenders in this region. In fact, I would say it is the best African group in Miss World in sometime.
  • Merit Leaders If I were solely basing judging on total beauty, the leader would be Tanzania (Nancy Abraham Sumari), the only delegate who combines incredible beauty (a Black version of Philippines' Carlene Aguilar) with super-confidence and polishing. Right behind her is Botswana (Tshegofatso Robi), who shares the same qualities with a more subdued personality.
  • Status Quo? Nigeria (Akinnifesi Omowunmi) is the most polished in terms of her look, diction and poses, although they also come off a bit too put-on. With a winner in 2001, followed by placements in both 2002 and 2004, there is no doubt that Nigeria is a contender at Miss World with the right girl.
  • Rising from the pack I don't personally consider her to be among the most facially beautiful in this group, but in terms of overall packaging, South Africa (Dhiveja Sundrum) packs a real punch. As expected from an SA delegate, she is very well-spoken, confident and well-groomed. If that is enough to bring the rainbow nation's drought at MW, we have to see.
  • Miss Personality 2005 If there was a bubbly, spunky and cute fast-track, the winner would be Kenya (Cecilia Mwangi). Who can overlook her gleaming smile and unique African sense of style? She is definitely in contention to offer a surprise.
  • If we are talking about a truly authentic African beauty, then its no doubt Zambia (Precious Mumbi), who sizzles with a certain sexiness and traditional feel to her.
  • Recognition should be given to Mauritius (Meenakshi Putty), a pleasant surprise in the "Vote for Me" special and one of her nation's best delegates in recent years to any pageant.
  • SUMMARY: African QOB - Tanzania, AF Semi-Finalist - South Africa, Zambia, Key Alternates - Namibia, Nigeria

    Commentary: ASIAN PACIFIC GROUP

  • Clear in the lead: Carlene Aguilar (Philippines) has been noted by fans since the beginning of this year, and her momentum has only managed to increase as the crowning is days away. Armed with a beautiful face, radiant smile and 'cutesy' personality, she has all the assets to become a Miss World...and indeed, she is in Sanya to win. She is by far the frontrunner to take the Asian Pacific Continental title, with a slim chance of an upset. She will be up against stunning contenders from other regions for the coveted crown, though!
  • Can she be kept out?: Ting-Ting Zhao (China) has possibly been China's most lackluster delegate since their entry to Miss World. While she is indeed attractive, there are superior delegates in the region. However, she is Miss China, and that in itself is a fast-track title. Her chances at the continental title are slim, thought.
  • Two's company, three's a crowd! This is probably a concept that a few other strong contenders in the region are going to have to realize. With the above two having a virtual lock, the chance for another to sneak in are slim. This group includes Australia (Dennae Brunow), a vivacious blonde 'beach beauty' type who appears every bit as stunning on tv as her modelling photos showed her to be. Can she make it a 4th consecutive year for the island nation? Perhaps "Beauty with a Purpose" can open some doors. Alongside her is India (Sindhura Gadde), who is not as conventionally beautiful as last year's representative, but has clearly made use of what she was available to her: style, fitness, personality, diction and a cosmopolitan aura which most of the region's delegates lack. India is certainly not a sure defeat this time.
  • Back with an attitude In a marked difference from her predecessor, Japan (Erina Shinohara) has been sent under a new national director, and her Westernized packaging contrasts heavily with the traditional representatives from the past. The change in director will also end the Miss World/Miss International battle, with only their respective candidates suffering.
  • Not be totally overlooked... Malaysia (Emmeline Ng) reminds us of the nation's stunning representatives in the 1990's and has an edge of modernity/style Indonesia (Lindi Cistia) is extremely cute and youthful, but the political mileage out of its placement has already been used. Sri Lanka (Nadeeka Perera) has a beautiful face, but lacks the polishing. Hong Kong (Tracy Ip Chui Chui) is also a stunner, but a Miss Hong Kong will never place in a Chinese Miss World Pageant.
  • Wild-Cards She has been seen all over in photos from the Chinese press, but is not regarded as a contender by most: New Zealand (Kay Margaret Anderson)
  • SUMMARY: Asia/Pacific QOB - Philippines, AP Semi-Finalist - China, Key Alternates - India, Australia

    BEACH BEAUTY

In a way, this year's "Beach Beauty" show, combined elements from Beach Beauty and last year's Top Model contest. It was held indoors, as a formal evening event, as opposed to the beach setting of 2003/2004. Emerging as the winner of Beach Beauty 2005 is Miss Russia, Yulia Ivanova. The 5'10" beauty is an aspiring tv presenter and now advances to the Top 15 of Miss World.

Finishing in second was a surprise delegate, Moldova's Irina Dolovova. Placing third was Mexico's Dafne Molina. The finalists were Canada - Ramona Amiri and Iceland - Unnur Birna.

The finalists group was whittled down from the initial group of 102: They were Brazil (Patricia Reginato), Costa Rica (Leonora Jimenez), El Salvador (Alejandra Carcamo), Hong Kong (Chui Chui Ip), Italy (Sofia Bruscoli), Jamaica (Terri Karelle Griffith), Kenya (Cecilia Mwangi), Lebanon (Lamitta Frangieh), New Zealand (Kay Anderson), Philippines (Carlene Aguilar), Slovenia (Sanja Grohar), South Africa (Dhiveja Sundrum), Trinidad & Tobago (Jenna Marie Andre) and Wales (Claire Evans).

    TALENT WINNER

Miss American Virgin Islands, Kmisha Victoria Counts, was named as Miss World Talent during the Beach Beauty Contest held at the Sheraton Sanya on December 6th. During a show held earlier in the month in Wenzhou, Kmisha was a finalist along with Czech Republic, Italy, Japan and Canada. She now advances to the Top 15 semi-finalists. Kmisha is a music student and sang "I Will Always Love You" from 'The Bodyguard' as her talent. American Virgin Islands has not been in the finals of Miss World since 1989, when Vania Thomas took that honor. This also guarantees the Caribbean will have at least 3 representatives in the semifinals.

    MISS WORLD!...WHERE TO...NEXT?

  • When Miss World President Julia Morley signed contracts with the Government of Sanya, prior to the 2003 pageant, the deal cited the open possibility of keeping the pageant there in 2004 and 2005, as well, which obviously went through. In an interview, Sanya mayor Zhang Qi confirmed that Miss World will not return to Sanya in 2006, now that it has succeeded in its endeavours of increasing publicity and tourism in the sleepy island city. Now that the three-year "deal" is up, where will Miss World go next?

    Clockwise: Dalian, Istanbul, Oporte, Brisbane

  • BRISBANE/GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA - Seeking more worldwide promotion of its beautiful beaches and cosmopolitan atmosphere, state officials and a few local businessmen invited MWO to the Miss World Australia Pageant in 2003, to promote the prospect of a pageant in Australia's "Gold Coast". An Australian Parliamentarian, Michael Johnson, on the government tourism committee, is leading the promotion, and hopes to convince Miss World officials and local business that the relationship can be mutual beneficial.
  • ISTANBUL, TURKEY - There has been no secret that Turkish tourism officials have been in negotiations with Miss World, Ltd. for a while. It played host to the grand Mr. World 1996, a men's show held on the scale of any Miss World. Negotiations were on in 2001, but Sun City won out then. Then in 2003, it was being acclaimed as the alternate host venue to Sanya, as the China SARS scare put that arrangement in dilemma. Miss World 2002, Azra Akin, has been at the center of a worldwide Turkish tourism promotion, and announced that Istanbul is attempting to host Miss World 2006. Despite Turkey being the least Conservative Islamic nation, Miss World does remember 2002, and may think twice on this one.
  • OPORTO/TROIA, PORTUGAL - Troia was the resort peninsula outside of Lisbon which hosted Mr. World 1998, and later on, Miss Mundo Portugal in 2001. In fact, it was reported that during the bidding for Miss World 2001, it was one of the frontrunners. The other option is Oporto, Portugal's second largest city in the northern coast, which is less frequented by travellers than Lisbon.
  • MOSCOW, RUSSIA - Talks were held with Russian officials over hosting either the 2005 or 2006 pageant in Russia, either Moscow or another city.
  • OTHERS - A clearer picture will arise after this year's pageant. After all, there has been a diverse group of cities in the running for the pageant, ranging from Singapore to Dallas, USA.
  • PAST DESTINATIONS OF MISS WORLD - London (UK), Miami, Atlanta (US), Macau, Malta, Malaga (Spain), Hong Kong, Taiwan, Norway, Cape Town, Sun City (SA), Comores, Dubai (UAE), Livingstone (Zambia), Seychelles, Bangalore (India), Paris (France), Maldives, Abuja/Port Harcourt (Nigeria), Xi'an, Shanghai, Beijing, Sanya, Wenzhou (China).

    SHANGHAI STOPOVER

  • As reported earlier, the delegates were split into two groups over the 2nd and 3rd. The delegates from the Americas, North Europe and Asian Pacific went to Shanghai, while the delegates from Africa, the Caribbean and South Europe stayed in Sanya.
  • The delegates in Shanghai had a mini-press call during the daytime and attended the charity auction in the evening. The delegate from Hong Kong fetched the highest bid for her gem-studded globe.
  • Julia Kourotchkina, Azra Akin, Lúcia Petterle, Gina Thicke, Denise Perrier, and Wilnelia Merced are the confirmed ex-Miss World's who will serve on the judges' panel on the 10th. In the coming week, Miss World, Ltd. will release the complete list of judges, performers, hosts and so forth to the Chinese media
  • EVENT BROADCAST: Miss World, Ltd. has made its list of broadcasters available at the following LINK. This may be the largest Miss World broadcast ever, with the organization already confirming broadcast in 70 of the countries participating this year. More countries may be added as tv rights are still being negotiated. 12 more countries in the Middle East that do not take part in Miss World will be covered by regional broadcaster MBC. If regional African broadcaster M-Net also takes part, Miss World will be available in most African countries, as well. The event will also be shown for the first time on America tv since 1994, on E! Entertainment.
  • Delegates staying in Sanya were treated to a visit to the Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Park. There, they had the chance to see some rare statues, beautiful landscaping and architecture, and finally a show of Kung Fu by the monks.
  • Miss Angola, Claudia Santana, never arrived at the pageant to begin with. Miss Finland arrived and went to Wenzhou with the other delegates, when she had to return to Finland due to a family emergency. Miss Congo, DRC was the only contestant who was a week late, due to some last-minute problems with her travel arrangements.

    CHANGES TO SCHEDULE

The Miss World Organization made some late changes to the 2005 Schedule:
  • BEACH BEAUTY, originally scheduled for Saturday, November 26th, was postponed to Tuesday, December 6th. The aim is to make the fast-track event a more formal, organized event which will be followed by a party on the beach at the Sanya Sheraton
  • According to the press, the scheduled Shanghai-Tianjin-Beijing Itinerary did not come through due to a lack of coordination between various agencies. Last year, a scheduled visit to Beijing also failed due to log
  • The delegates were originally scheduled to visit Shanghai on the 27th and 28th. However, they will now be there on December 2nd, for a special charity gala at the Equatorial Hotel. According to Chinese media, they will only be there for one day, and will dress in the traditional costumes while auctioning off their national gifts. Miss World 2004, Maria Julia Mantilla, made a special visit on Saturday the 26th, to announce this. Only HALF of the delegates will be part of this event. On December 3rd, they will take some time to visit key spots in Shanghai, and then return to Sanya in the evening.
  • The other 1/2 of the delegates will remain in Sanya, rehearsing on schedule. On December 3rd, however, they have been invited to a special Flower Exposition in the city.
  • Instead of the expected second part of the China tour, the delegates have been participating in some impromptu activities in Sanya for the past couple of days. Among them were a beach volleyball game, a soccer game, shopping and relaxation. The Chinese media reported the skill of the African delegates during the soccer tournament with hotel staff.
  • Another group of six delegates was interviewed on Monday by the press. Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, Guyana, Mauritius and Guatemala were in the spotlight this time around. They explained bits about themselves and their countries while expressing happiness over their experience in China thus far. The press also caught up with Miss Kenya, Cecilia Mwangi, mostly to find out about the intricate beads she wears around her face.

    SANYA ACTIVITIES

  • The delegates depart for their remaining tour of China on Sunday, November 27th. The Beach Beauty competition, scheduled for Saturday (11/26), was postponed to the following week.
  • Besides packed days of video-taping back in Sanya, delegates that were not taping that day were taken to the spectacular Yalong Bay Butterfly Park, which boasts of 2,000 varities of butterflies and a host of other flora and fauna.
  • On one evening, the Sheraton Sanya management threw a special party for the delegates, where they expressed their appreciation for the service given to them, and danced, ate and drank the night away. They were joined by nearly 200 other guests staying at the hotel.
  • The local press took a few moments out to focus on the five delegates of Chinese descent competing for this year's crown: Chinese Taipei, China P.R., Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong...but wait - didn't they forget someone? Miss Philippines is also of Chinese descent, and has competed for the Miss Chinese International crown. So, we have six in all.

    FINAL SET FOR MISS WORLD

  • On November 24th, construction for the final night's stage at the Beauty Crown Theater began, and the press was invited to take a look at it. The intent is to appear to look like a diamond, sparkling light from every direction. A Beijing Company has been brought in to put together this concept, and will piece it together by November 30th, when the delegates begin their stage rehearsals. The stage will feature five giant screens to allow the audience to see everything. A certain number of seats have been eliminated to allow for the more spacious design. The background will be pitch-black in order to allow a sharp contrast with the bright set and colorful images on the television screens. Like last year's set, the designers have decided on something more modern and minimalist to place focus on the delegates.

    BACK IN SANYA

  • The delegates are back in Sanya, finishing up the other 3 of the "Vote for Me" specials. Besides Angela Chow, who was featured in the Asian Pacific special, former Mr. World contestant from Mexico, Gabriel Soto, was featured in the Caribbean special, and may possibly host the America's special as well.
  • Sky-High Ticket Prices This year, the highest-selling ticket price has gone up from $2,000 in 2004 to $5,000! There are also 'distinguished' tickets in the $2,000 and $1,000 range, followed by $600, $400, $200 and $100 seats in further back sections. Of course, the $5,000 tickets include the best final night seats, a ticket to the coronation ball, special VIP services and an invitation to an exclusive swimsuit show and evening banquet on December 6th.
  • Julia Morley has announced that including 10 former Miss World's who will serve on the judging panel, a total of 25 ex-Miss World's will be in Sanya for the crowning of the 55th Miss World.
  • The original schedule of Miss World intended next week's China tour to include a day in Tianjin and then an excursion to Beijing. However, a revised schedule shown by both Sohu.com and Sina.com says the delegates will be going straight from Shanghai to 3-day excursion to Chengdu. Chengdu, near the Chiangjing River in Central-Southern China, is a city rich in thousands of years of Chinese imperial history, besides being a site on the original "Silk Road", a cotton center and home to giant Panda's. Chengdu is home to 11 million people, and now Southwest China's economic hotspot. It is also the main access point into nearby Tibet.

    TALENT FAST-TRACK

This year, the Talent Fast-Track competition was held during the delegates' excursion to Wenzhou, at the Rui’an stadium. The pre-selections were held in Sanya the previous week, but on Sunday, November 20th, the final was held. In order to allow more delegates stage time, 65 delegates were chosen at the talent pre-selection, although each delegate only had 90 seconds this year to show off her talent. In addition to this, the delegates modelled traditional dress from their countries one-by-one, which they were asked to bring by the Miss World organization.

    SUMMARY OF THE FIRST WEEK

  • November 16th: The Talent Pre-Selections/Rehearsal were held in a nearby assembly hall. The final is on November 20th
  • Julia Morley pulled out six continental representatives in the afternoon for a small promotional call of a company sponsoring the pageant. Pageant observers often regard her choices of delegates in past years to these 'small-knit events' an indication of who may be ahead. The delegates were from Jamaica, South Africa, China (PR), France, Costa Rica and Iceland.

  • November 14th - 17th: Delegates participate in swimsuit pre-tapings for the 6 "Vote For Me" specials. Besides mandatory sessions for all delegates on the last day, the first three days were exclusively to tape the 3 "Vote for Me" specials for the Asian Pacific and two European sections. The three remaining specials will be completed after the delegates return from Wenzhou.
  • It has been offically announced that Phoenix TV's Angela Chow will return as a host to Miss World for the third year running. • In the evening, they proceeded to the Mangrove Bay Resort Hotel for a dinner given by the Government of Sanya to welcome the delegates. Julia Morley thanked the government for the work they did to organize the event. The girls all got their second chance to impress the press in cocktailwear. According to Sohu.com (Official media patron of Miss World 2005), Miss Philippines (Carlene Aguilar) was looking graceful in a blue skirt and feather ensemble, while Miss China's (Ting-Ting Zhao) youthfulness contrasted with the elegance of her black evening gown. All of the delegates took the stage in their respective groups. The evening was complemented by performing arts displays.

  • November 12th: Rest and relaxation over! The girls set off in the streets of Sanya, as dozens of colorful jeeps were ready to parade them for the public during the Happy Hainan Festival, held to concur with Miss World festivities every year. Besides the parade, a number of other spectacular visual treats are put on for the public. In the evening, they donned a more formal look for the Golden Rooster Film Awards, an event which featured numerous Chinese film stars. However, the girls got the chance to take a walk down the red carpet and serve as special guests for the event.
  • November 10th-11th: The delegates arrived in Sanya's airport, with the Chinese media waiting to catch a glimpse of the beauties. The girls, tired from jet lag, spent the first couple of days getting settled in to the Sheraton Sanya and getting to know their new roommates.

    THE JUDGING PROCESS/JUDGES PANEL

The first press conference has already been held for the 2005 pageant in China. This year, 2 delegates from each continental region will be selected by a judging panel, with three additional spots in the semi-finals reserved for the winners of (1) Miss World Talent, (2) Miss World's Beach Beauty and (3) Miss World's "Beauty With a Purpose".
  • The Talent and Beach Beauty competitions were held in the previous two pageants, highlighting the delegates with the best performing arts talent and best overall styling and fitness in beachwear.
  • "Beauty with a Purpose" seeks a delegate who has made extraordinary contribution to chosen cause(s). Besides a presentation submitted to the pageant prior to the delegates' arrival in China, there will be three days during the final rehearsal period when interviews will be held with the girls. It is assumed this award will be announced at the final event.
  • The Sport, Top Model and Delegates' Choice fast-tracks have been eliminated.
  • With a vote-weighting system which allows each country in a region to have the same number of total points to allocate to any ten delegates in that region only, 2 semi-finalists who achieve the top number of votes through Telephone/SMS will be announced as semi-finalists for their respective continents. If a delegate has already won a fast-track or vice-versa, the next highest vote-recipient will be named.
  • Once the fifteen semi-finalists are in place, a judging panel at the Miss World Theater will deliberate to choose six continental queens (even though 1-3 regions will have more than 2 semi-finalists), and those six winners will be announced as the crowning moment nears. After making their final assessment, a new Miss World and runners-up will be named. This new system seeks to blend both public participation and the traditional judges' panel. The six regions are: America's, North Europe, South Europe, Africa, The Caribbean and Asian Pacific.

JUDGES: MWO has announced that the final judging panel will consist of all former Miss World's, for the first time ever:

  • Julia Kourotchkina (Russia, 1992)
  • Azra Akin (Turkey, 2002)
  • Lúcia Petterle (Brazil, 1971)

THE REIGNING QUEEN - PERU'S MARIA JULIA MANTILLA

It has been a whirlwind year so far for the reigning Miss World, Maria Julia Mantilla of Peru. After meeting the Chinese media and lingering in Sanya a few days after her coronation, she was flown into London to finish paperwork and begin some work. Only a few weeks passed before she made a well-received homecoming into her native Peru, starting with a touch-down in Lima and then on to her native Trujillo and other regions to celebrate the holidays.
  • In January, she went back to China, but this time to Beijing, where she launched an AIDS Awareness initiative and was photographed visiting the Great Wall and Forbidden City.
  • In March, she was off the USA, making a stopover in Latin-influenced Miami, where she appeared on one of the community's most well-known talk shows, Don Francisco, and gave other interviews and appearances. She then worked at the 2005 Variety Clubs Charity Telethon in Des Moines, Iowa, followed by a Unicef Tsunami Dinner & Fashion Show in Houston, Texas.
  • In April, she was accompanied by Julia Morley to Russia, first in the city of Perm, home to the Russian delegate in Miss World 2004, who met Maria there. Along with the Russian Beauty director, they were treated to a traditional welcome of the cold inner region, and they participated in an orphanage visit and a circus specially for under-privileged children. Julia and Maria then went off to Moscow, for a private meeting with a boy helped by the Miss World organization many years ago, and a visit to a Moscow Childrens' hospital, besides press meetings. Later in the month, she was off to Prague, Czech Republic, for a special tour of the city and press call, beyond some charitable activities. She made an appearance at the Miss Czech pageant, as well. With a stopover in Beijing and Sanya, Maria moved on to Indonesia to help in Jackie Chan's charitable relief efforts for tsunami victims. After a stopover in Jakarta, she met victims affected by the earthquake in Banda Aceh, and participated in a fund-raising activities, beyond having an audience with the Indonesian President.
  • In June, she did something never done before by a Miss World, with a special project where she would scale a Himalayan mountain in Tibet to fund-raise for charity. Even though she is a natural athlete, she had to begin an intense training regimen. Her only break in the month was the Red Cross Charity Ball in London, but then it was back to Peru to be tested and trained to make sure she would be ready.
  • In July, it was a break from her rigorous training to make an appearance with Ms. Morley in Wenzhou, China, which will be one of the cities of the 2005 Miss World Tour. Besides press meetings, their was a special celebration by local officials of her 21st birthday. It was then off to Lhasa, where she made final preparations for her climb - she made it to the summit.
  • In September she met the current and former Miss Ireland's at the The Heartbeat Trust Ball in Dublin, which sought to raise awareness of heart disease. In the time she isn't travelling, Maria spends time in Peru, England and China, working in charitable projects, attending galas, shootings promo's as the Special Tourism Ambassador Of Peru, and promoting the upcoming Miss World Pageant, where she will give up her crown. In her native Peru, she is of superstar status, with the media and public always keeping a watchful eye.
