Last Update: December 16th, 2004
It was the return of a triumphant queen on the eve of December 16th, as Maria Julia Mantilla, Peru's Miss World 2004, returned to her native country. After being crowned on the 4th, 'Maju' spent 2 weeks in London in various society and charity events, aside from a crash course in English and some Miss World etiquette training. She landed at Lima's International Airport, where her family and friends were waiting in one zoned off area, including Marina Mora and Maria Julia Mantilla, her aunt and ex-beauty queen. Tight security was arranged, with at least 50 police officers protecting her and the Miss World President and Vice-President, Julia and Steven Morley, who accompanied her. Throngs of people eagerly awaited outside the airport, hoping to catch a glimpse of the beauty, but she was quickly whisked into a white limousine, courtesy of her national directors, and escorted by the police to the Country Club Hotel. Despite news of a press conference, this has been postponed until Friday. The press pushed and shoved their way to try and get a photo of her or speak with her, but she finally arrived out onto her balcony, giving a short, sweet message and then going back to her private celebration, as reporters screamed "Maju!" "Maju!".

Friday morning - The much-awaited press conference where Maria will talk about her win and what she planned for the future. The press is very curious to know about her boyfriend, as well. Later, she will attend a special banquet with the Mayor of Lima and visit the Peruvian Congress, and she will be given a special ambassador title. On Saturday, arrangements have been made for a morning meeting with the President of Peru, Alejandro Toledo, along with representatives of Miss World and Reinas Del Peru. She will then leave for her native Trujillo. Special festivities have been set up with dance, music from her arrival at the airport on to her journey to a couple of major local sites. The Miss World Organization will allow her to then take a brief vacation with her friends and family for Christmas and the New Year, after which she will be immediately sent off to worldwide obligations in Kenya, India and Egypt, according to local authorities. In the meantime, you can read more about her in Caretas Magazine. http://www.americatv.com.pe/noticias/view.asp?id_video=3754

Exhausted delegates from Turkey and Egypt on their way out

Farewell, Miss World! Contestants departed from Sanya on Sunday and Monday to return to their home countries...with many different emotions, ranging from disappointment, to happiness, to not wanting to leave their new friends, to wanting to return to normal life. It was a competitive year, and congratulations to all 107 beauties who decided to take on the challenge. See you next year.

Maria Julia Mantilla held on of her first formal interviews on Monday, with Miss United States as her translator, the only other delegate who has not left yet. She discussed how her platform will be focused on AIDS Awareness work, and she was able to give the reporter statistics on her research thus far. She will be going to Beijing in January for a large AIDS Conference.

Post-Pageant Comments

The final of Miss World 2004 left me with very fixed emotions. On the one hand, I was over the moon to hear the name of Miss Peru, Maria Julia Mantilla as the new Miss World. She was my bet for the crown from her crowning to just a few weeks back. It is hard to deny her incredible facial beauty, and the sort of class and sophistication she exudes while still showing personality. Miss World has not failed to crown another beauty, our first winners from the America's since Venezuela's Jackie Aguilera in 1995. It was obvious than voting was in fact taken into account, a detail that some had believed earlier and some others had been skeptical of.

First Runner-Up was a slight, but not major surprise. Although I find her to be a bit too pageanty, Dominican Republic's Claudia Cruz is beautiful in a conventional way.

USA

Dominican Republic

Poland

In Third place we had Nancy Randall, Miss United States. I must say, she looked at the top of her game in the pageant and has an excellent mix of beauty and brains. It was enough to even take away attention from a somewhat showy gown. Topping out the top five was another personal favorite, Poland's. Again, she looked her best in the actual pageant, although I never expected her to go that far. It was perhaps justice for some stunning Polish contenders from previous years. The placement of Philippines in the top five was slightly degrading to the many beautiful contenders sent from Asia & Oceania this year. Although last year's delegate impressed us with her style and personality, this year's delegate should have ranked among the bottom contenders, in physical terms. The most natural assumption is that an overzealous voting campaign produced this unfortunate result on an otherwise strong finalist group.

Vietnam

Mexico

Russia

In the remaining ten finalists, we had 4 of the fast-track winners, Mexico, Wales, Antigua and Australia. It was especially distressing to see Australia out of the top five. She looked simply mesmerizing. Russia and Trinidad & Tobago both looked great and failed to surprise most pageant followers. China, as I suspected, did not place as high as previous years. I think her gown was just a bit over the top, even if it displayed some beautiful ethnic elements. Vietnam is extremely cute, and again, a surprise, but not a surprise. Czech Republic was another pre-pageant favorite, but does not live up to her beatiful predecessors. Nigeria is a shock beyond all shocks. Out of the African contestants, I was clearly predicting Angola, with possibilities for a number of other countries who sent strong representatives this year, such as Uganda, Tanzania and Botswana.

History-Makers: It was a fairly diverse group; There were 3 finalists from the Caribbean, 3 from the America's, 1 from Africa, 4 from Asia and Oceania and 4 from Europe. 5 out of the 15 semi-finalists were women of African origin, something that I was surprised to see in Miss World. There were definitely some ups and downs for various countries.
Powerhouses stumbling? India seems to be turning into a hit-or-miss at the pageant, having seen better day in the 1990's. However, the worst situation is for Venezuela, which has gone from consistent finalists to only having placed 3/8 years, with only one advancing to the final five. They also failed to place in all 3 of the national pageant's pet events (Universe, World, International) and have not been faring well in regional competitions, either. South Africa placed straight from its re-debut in 1991 to 1999, but afterward it only placed once, in its home country, and only in the top ten.
Re-emerging In the meantime, USA was finally back in the top five for the first time since Gina Thicke's victory in 1990! b>Philippines continued a 3-year streak due to voting, after seeing a rather bleak run in the 80's and 90's.
The new powers China failed to make the top five after 3 years, but she still made it, and it is likely that trend won't stop. Vietnam celebrated placements in Miss World in 2 of the 3 years it has actually participated! Australia and Peru also celebrated a 3rd year in their own streak. Both Russia and Nigeria have managed to place in 3 out of the last 4 years. Trinidad & Tobago and Dominican Republic both managed a second year.
Long wait... Giant Brazil spent a 6th year out in the cold, but Mexico came back in after 7 years. Poland is back after a full 12 years.

China

Czech Republic

Nigeria

The show was well-done and a booster on the last couple of years. The opening was simply spectacular, combining the drama of the drum performance with the sensational swimsuit dance in the opening. The eveningwear segment was full of unnecessary choreography. The mood in that parade was mellow, yet fast-paced enough to keep viewer attention. The other local entertainment piece was absolutely fascinating, but the same can not be said for Il Divo...I mean, "Unbreak my heart?" That was perhaps the low point of the show. Lionel Richie was another pleasant addition, although I hoped to hear one of his modern hits along with the classics. It was a nice touch for him to serenade the new Miss World. Although the footage showcasing the finalists and sub-contests was fantastic, as usual, it would have been excellent to have something reminiscent of the fashion show in the actual telecast, just for the finalists. It would give viewers more of an opportunity to identify their favorites out of the 15. The cut to the top five was unnecessarily rushed. It would have been interesting to see the leaderboards from some other countries throughout the telecast. The purpose of even having a judging panel was beyond me, when they did not open their mouths once! Overall, the packaging of the show was good...the stage, the lights, the music, the smooth flow of the show and the touch between traditional and modern, east meets west...congratulations Miss World, you've done it again!

Her parents are still in Trujillo, where well-wishers have been calling and stopping by to congratulate them. There will be a great party there today for the victory. She also has a boyfriend back home, who anticipates giving her a kiss upon her arrival back, but her mother denies any plans of marriage, saying that she is too young. Maria's aunt, Maria Julia Mantilla, was Miss Peru in 1969. She will be welcomed back home in about two weeks time, and ocne she steps down in Lima, she will be taken in a parade and later greeted by the President and others. Dress rehearsal

    Dress rehearsal

    Last Update: December 2nd, 2004

    CONTESTANTS' CHOICE NAMED

Congratulations to the fifth semi-finalist, Australia's Sarah Davies. She is this year's Contestants' Choice and automatically fast-tracks into the semi-finals! This now makes three years in a row for Australia in the semi-finals, and proves speculation that Australia was considered the hot tip for this sub-title. A dress rehearsal was held on December 2nd, with the stage entirely ready for the final show, and 3,000 spectators in the audience. During the progress of the show, the three hosts named the four fast-track winners, and as a surprise, made the early announcement of the Contestants' Choice. Miss Canada won in this rehearsal, as the organization showed a striking contrast from last year's production, with a fashionable set, an opening number featuring the girls dancing in cocktail-wear, among even more dramatic performances by local artists.
  • Star-Struck Lionel Richie and Il Divo arrived in Sanya today, along with Sir Vivian Richards, who got a chance to meet many of the contestants, including his own countrywoman, who looks posed to do very well in the competition.
  • Miss World 2005 The municipality of Sanya has been extremely pleased the last two years about the increase in tourism as a result of Miss World. On December 3rd in the morning, Julia Morley announced plans to hold the pageant there a third year, something which was rumored last year.
  • A final contestant review is available Here.
  • Webcasts will be limited. Your best bet is to try the official web site of Miss World for its special, paid service. 4:00 Saturday TV Markiza (Slovakia). Colorvision (Dominican Republic), Televicentro (Puerto Rico) times are yet to be confirmed, but probably delayed. Band tv (Brazil) will not be running the event most likely. Streams for Indosiar (Indonesia) and MTV(Hungary) are available online, but with no confirmed times.

Contestants from Tanzania, Puerto Rico and the Philippines at the AIDS Conference

Miss Philippines gives her viewpoint on AIDS/HIV

Miss Albania is 'mock' Miss World

Practicing some moves for the final event

    Last Update: December 1st, 2004

  • Today, the delegates visited the Miss World stage for the first time. Miss Albania took the mock crown for the first time.
  • A group of contestants still sidestepped part of rehearsals today for an AIDS awareness conference. They were USA, South Africa, Fiji, Tanzania, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Brazil. The delegates gave their own viewpoints on the status of the disease worldwide. Fiji is a medical doctor and was personally interested in the cause. South Africa and Tanzania both mentioned the extreme effect of AIDS in Africa. Today is World AIDS Day, and the pageant once again showed it is truly 'Beauty with a Purpose'

    Last Update: 11/30

  • Two judges have already been announced to provide the audience with their 'opinions' and only that. They are internationally reknowned cricketeer Sir Vivian Richards of the West Indies and Australian actress Katie Richie. It is presumed that more judges will be on hand to offer their commentary.
  • The delegates are currently spending their last few days in intense rehearsals, mostly focused on the dance routines for the opening number and the group modelling segments for the eveningwear fashion show. The final prize which will be given out on the final show, Best Eveningwear, was ajudged during the Miss World Fashion Show held last week.

An outside view of the Miss World Crown of Beauty

Germany and her mother get a small celebration on her birthday

Contestants from Argentina, Peru, Greece, Cyprus pose before attending a special seminar.

    Last Update: 11/29

  • Group Study; Similar to last year, a small press conference was gathered with contestants from Gibraltar, Holland, Latvia, Greece, Sweden, Finland, and Moldova. Basically, they were asked to answer general questions about today's Miss World, HIV, their personal likes, and so forth.
  • The Miss World Crown of Beauty has been remodelled in the last few days, with a better sound system, more expensive lighting and two giant video screens. The planned design, as rumored, is a completely white background to provide a more fashion-show like setting, with curvature for the video screens, in which segments from the beach and other activities will be displayed.
  • Despite a lower level of interest than last year's month-long spectacle, Sanya's political and business leaders are happy with the exposure that the small island has received in the world. One of the clearest indicators of this was heightened levels of tourism all throughout this season. One can only wonder if this will mean a 3rd year in Sanya for Miss World...
  • Happy Birthday! Now it was Miss Germany's turn to celebrate her birthday. Her mother was on hand to celebrate with her.
  • Awareness The contestants and their family members/friends were invited to a special seminar today which focused on womens' rights around the world, particularly the rights of the girl child in Africa. Special speakers were brought in to inform the audience, and the girls really felt enlightened afterward.

    You Decide: A Review

The "You Decide" show started with the mock Beach Party scene. Only Troy McClain anchored this event, taking some time to chat with the girls in-between. There were also two segments showing the delegates' activities to date. For now, I only give an overview of actual personal opinions. A condensed, final review will come in the next couple of days, which takes this into consideration with the actual competitive edge of the girls.

Group 1 has contenders that will be mostly scrambling for the European/Latin spots. Beauty-wise, my pick is Belgium. Even with a petite frame, she is beautiful. Ecuador is incredibly sexy, while France and Netherlands both exude a ton of sophistication. Group 2 is led by the consistently stunning Russia. Her television presence outstrips her photo beauty. The real sex bomb of this group is Northern Ireland, who SHOULD be Britain's best bet in this competition. Bulgaria and Moldova also lead with their combination of offbeat styles (intense curls, sharp contrast colors) and good looks.

Group 3 has a clear-cut contender: Thailand. While her actual outcome leaves doubts in my mind, she is a clean-cut beauty, polished in all areas and should be contending for the crown. Also to look out in this group are two truly beach babes: Italy and Sweden. Group 4 is a rather weak group, but my opinion of pageant favorite Trinidad & Tobago has certainly risen. She has incredible presence and self-confidence. Falling behind her in this group are Panama and Ethiopia, both who possess the right charm and polish (+ beauty), but might not have a competitive edge.

From right to left: Holland, Finland, Greece, Gibraltar, Latvia, Moldova, Sweden pose at a special press conference on Monday

Group 5's hottest contender in my mind is Bosnia & Herzegovina, who has a perfect face and just a hint of sex appeal. However, she is extremely close to Slovakia and Poland, who could both battle her and the other Eastern Europeans in the end with their high-class bond girl aura. Group 6 has one babe who is heads above the rest. Australia is clearly becoming the Rosanna of this year's pageant. She is beautiful facially, has improved upon her presence, been polished and seems to have worked things in her favor this time. But let's not over look India, who can simply radiate on-screen, and Mexico, who possesses the presence factor.

Group 7 is dominated by Brazil. She is tall, sexy and has presence, but maybe needs to be more charismatic, although charisma is something that takes Angola to the next level. Her looks are haunting. The same goes for Paraguay, who relies on sexy moves and a modern edge in her look to edge out the competition. Finally, in Group 8 we have a goddess in the form of Spain, mostly because of a flawless porcelain face. She even edges out an earlier personal favorite, Peru, who loses her edge here but still manages to look good. Chinese Taipei is extremely cute and gets attention.

    Last Update: 11/27

  • Book Drop; Sunday afternoon, the delegates met up in the Sheraton's central dining room to cast the votes for the final fast-track award: Miss Personality. It is now confirmed that that award-winner will once again fast-track into the finals, and the award will be announced on December 4th.
  • After casting their votes, the delegates headed to another reception where they donated a book from their country along with a small national flag inserted, to create an international childrens' library.
  • Sour Grapes; Miss Austria, Sylvia Hackl, told the Austrian press that her withdrawal had to do with a fight she had with pageant officials about her luggage. The pageant has not responded to her claims of poor treatment in regards to said luggage. It is unknown if they ever will!
  • Global Spectacle; The full telecast list is now available at www.missworld.tv. This year, Miss World will return to the small screen in major markets such as the U.S., Canada, Australia, the U.K., South Africa, among others. The broadcast will truly be a global event.
  • Miss Childrens' Charities?; Contestants from Angola, Antigua, Australia, Belgium, China P.R.O., Dominican Republic, Fiji Islands were invited to join Julia Morley in a special visit to the Hang Sha Childrens' Home in Sanya (11/27). There is speculation that with the inclusion of certain delegates who have been faring well in Miss World's fast-track events, the pageant may be showing favoritism by inviting these delegates along. Only time can tell us is this is true.
  • New Host; Joining Angela Chow and Troy McClain to host the final event will be Lisa Snowdon, a sex kitten in the British modelling scene. She is also a television anchor and is trying her hand at acting.

This will be known later on. In addition, there was no onstage segment and Hanson was not there to perform, although these items were never confirmed by the Miss World Organization, regardless.
    - The number of contestants is back down to 107, with the withdrawal of Miss Austria, Sylvia Hackl, from the pageant for unknown reasons. Last year, the local delegate forwent the pageant for fear of competition, and the year before, as part of the pageant boycott.

As part of this program, host Troy McClain and the Sheraton staff joined the delegates in showing off live footage in a taped 'beach party', with the delegates sipping drinks, dancing, playing beach volleyball, etc. Troy will also be shown interviewing some of the delegates during the party. This is part of the effort to increase the amount of exposure for delegates in the pageant.

    - The delegates took a side trip to Wanning, a tropical city on Hainan's East Coast, and were welcomes by thousands of local fans. The panel of judges included: Miss World President Julia Morley, Variety Clubs Representative Krish Naidoo, General Manager of the Sanya Theatre Wu Jiaming, musician Michael Dickson, and an executive from a Chinese television station.

The results of the Miss Sport Competition are as follows: Miss World Sport is Amy Guy, Miss Wales. She was followed by Sarah Davies from Australia, and in a tie for third place, both Trinidad & Tobago's Kenisha Thom and Peru's Maria Julia Mantilla. Remaining finalists were: Antigua, Fiji, Holland, Iceland, Russia, and Thailand, who were screened out of the original contestants. The three final events were: Track, Long Jump and Swimming.

Amy Guy automatically fast-tracks to the top 20, the first Miss Wales to ever place in Miss World. Ms. Guy is not only an accomplished Equestrian, but has been on netball and cross-country teams, as well. Welsh newspapers already began praising her victory in the days following, and now, Miss World will be returning to British terrestrial television after a 2-year gap.

    Last Update: 11/16
Miss World has announced its largest television audience ever. In order to conduct the two-hour international broadcast, the organization has roped in the following:

Troy McClain, known for appearing on Donald Trump's hit show "The Apprentice", will be the male host for this year's pageant. Although he is making waves as a professional corporate speaker, his experience as an event host is evident.

For a second year, Angela Chow of Phoenix TV will play the role of female host. She enthused the audience with her strong experience in English and Chinese, as well as her naturally charismatic hosting style. It is unknown if a third host will be there this year.

Musica! The highlight performer for this year will be the internationally reknowned star Lionel Richie. He started his car in 1979 by making a smash with "Three Times a Lady". Throughout the eighties, he continued with hits such as "Endless Love" and "We Are the World". In the late 90's and recently, he has started to don a more modern image and has come up with hits such as "Angel" and "Don't Stop the Music".

Joining him will be the less-reknowned group Il Divo. The group was created last year by American Idol/British Idol visionary Simon Cowell. They try to bring classical and pop music together, singing in Spanish, English and Italian. With a 2004 debut, they are now #1 in the United Kingdom with Album sales, and they hope to make gains in other countries after this performance.

Tickets this year range from $60 to $2,000 U.S., along with special VIP tickets. Overall, promotion of the pageant is much lower compared to the previous year. The MWO claims that judges will be brought in to comment, but this has to be confirmed. Viewers should also expect local performances as part of the spectacle.

    Prayer Time

    Contestants from Africa

    Last Update: 11/16
    - On Tuesday, the contestants visited the Mt. Na Buddhist Cultural Center. There, they took some time to pray (probably for the crown) and watch some performances afterward.
    - Why has Rosanna been distinctly absent from Miss World Activities? She has been hitting cities like Hong Kong, Beijing and Guangzhou in an effort to drum up publicity for the pageant. She has also been joined by last year's Miss China, Guan Qi.
    - $$$$$: Since Miss World 2001, neither than pageant nor Miss Universe have found a place on the South African small screen due to lack of viewer interest. However, Mnet has agreed with show a one-hour version of the pageant the same day.
    - The pageant this year has not found trouble in most areas of the world, but the new reality format is trying to battle the decreasing viewer interest in pageantry throughout European countries, something many European pageants had turned to, as well. The organization also hopes to find its way back onto television in Canada, USA and Australia this year.
    - Taking a tour? Rumors have started floating that Dallas, Texas (USA) is showing strong interest in hosting next year's pageant.

    BEACH BEAUTY WINNER:
    United States

    FIRST RUNNER-UP:
    Australia

    SECOND RUNNER-UP:
    Trinidad & Tobago

    Last Update: 11/14
    - The Miss World Beach Beauty contest was held on the white beaches of Sanya late Sunday afternoon. The winner of this event is United States, Nancy Randall. The Chicago resident automatically fast-tracks into the top twenty semi-finalists. With Rosanna Davison having picked up last year's crown, the USA is on its way to a clean sweep year in the world's three major pageants.
    - Finishing behind her were Australia's Sarah Davies and Trinidad and Tobago's Kenisha Thom, respectively. Finishing out the top ten were representatives from: Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Mexico, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Philippines. Congratulations to all the winners!
    - The evaluation for 'Beach Beauty' was done not just today, but over the last few days, during shootings. Twenty semi-finalists were chosen to step forward, and although we are not sure who all of them were, they included contestants from Aruba, Slovenia and Venezuela. Hainan's Daily News reported that some contestants were not pleased with the selection, but the winner certainly was, as she spent the rest of the day posing for photos and talking to reporters.
    - The judges for Beach Beauty WERE: Julia Morley, Miss World President; Wilnelia Forsythe, designer of the swimsuits and ex-Miss World; Krish Naidoo, Variety Clubs representative; Paul Kirrage, the director for this year's Miss World telecast; Li Xiaobai, representative of the New Road Modelling Agency; Claudio Nardini, General Manager of the Sheraton Sanya.
    - The Swimsuit Bash was a hit. Entertainment was brought in from all over the world, including a Hawaiian hula performance. With a grand buffet of food and plenty of spirits to enjoy, the audience was only more delighted during the swimsuit parade, held in-between performances. Of course, it was not just the audience who got to have the fun. The contestants were also spotted grabbing a plate of food, when they weren't busy posing for photos and getting ready for the show.
    - While approximately 60 of last year's contestants auditioned for the talent competition, this year, a whopping 85 decided to try their luck. After all, a semi-finalist berth is at stake! 20 finalists will be chosen for the fast-approaching talent finals. Performances this year include magic, ethnic dance, dramatic performances and mind games.
    - The Miss World Fashion Show preparations are also under way. Several local designers are busy creating designs for the theme "Rainbow Colors", aimed at promoting Sanya's fashion reputation. The contestants will be assigned to specific designers.
    - Almost all of the expected contestants came to Sanya. Miss Vietnam, Nguyen Thi Huyen, is expected to have made a delayed arrival in China, once her directors decided to send her. It is also unknown if Northern Marianas' representative did in fact arrive. Another surprise came when Miss Uruguay, Jimena Rivas did not show up. She has been removed from the Miss World contestants list. The story behind her absence is unknown. For the time being, it is presumed there are 107 contestants in China at the moment.

    Last Update: 11/13
    - The focus this year was much more on getting a detailed tour of Hainan Island's sites
    - The first trip was to Deerpark which is not actually a Deer park, but a traditional Hainan village set-up for cultural tourism. There they met with locals, who were very excited to greet the visitors. Of course, shopping for traditional handicrafts was a must!
    - The girls then proceeded for a tour of Butterfly valley, which is in fact known for its butterflies. The valley also had some beautiful natural sites for the girls to enjoy.
    - On Thursday, it was off to the Seashell Exhibition centre. One can be fascinated here by the variety of different oceanic objects up for display. However, the girls were more keen to get to the gift shop and then take some time to relax in front of the Yalong Bay, nearby. This time, as tourists approached for photos, Miss Brazil (Iara Coelho) handed out colorful campaign cards, asking people to give her their vote.
    - This year's swimsuits are once again a colorful collection by ex-Miss World, Wilnelia Forsythe. The girls got a chance to get accustomed to them, and then the photography and videography stint began. The 'You Decide' program will be airing in a couple of weeks from now.
    - Today, Saturday, the delegates will be mingling with approximately 300 visitors, during the 'Swimsuit Bash'. The details are not quite clear on what will really go on here. Tommorrow, the first semi-finalist will be chosen during "Beach Beauty".

Miss USA, Nancy Randall, and Miss Denmark, Line Larson, join the other Miss World contestants in a Street Parade in Sanya on November 9th.

    Last Update: 11/11
This year's pageant kicked off with a colorful street parade in Sanya. The delegates were driven on the route in special vehicles as thousands of locals came to see their favorite contestants. Virtually all of the contestants are in Sanya right now, getting ready for the first leg of the competition. The mayor of Sanya and Miss World President Julia Morley were among those who gave speeches.
    - Miss Egypt, Heba Ahmed caught a flight on Tuesday and has joined the other contestants, despite her mother's illness.
    - Miss India, Sayali Bhagat has been given the highest odds by a number of online betting-houses at the start of the pageant. Can she keep that lead, and do high odds really translate into Miss World success? Such was the case last year! - Miss Aruba, Luisiana Cecilia, celebrated her birthday upon arrival
    - Vietnam has finally opted out altogether, with the pageant stating that their contestant does not have sufficient time to prepare for the pageant.
    - Belize will be holding its next pageant in mid-December, with the winner going to Miss Universe and Miss World. they could not send a delegate this year due to the delay of the said pageant.

  • Final List of Delegates Posted
After months of speculation, a final list of delegates has been posted and is pending final confirmation, but it looks like this is the ultimate list of candidates who will be present in China. Most of the ommissions are candidates whose presence was questionable. They include: Algeria, Guatemala, and Malawi. Also on the list are the Miss World specified candidates from Vietnam and Northern Marianas. Countries like Belize and Andorra forewent the pageant altogether. The only real surprise this year is the Miss Fiji, Aishwarya Sukhdeo, who was set to compete last year, is now back this year. There are unofficial reports that Miss Northern Marianas may have secured the funding to arrive in China this week. Confirmation is expected. Miss Vietnam's non-presence apparently has to do with financial problems, as well, as with Miss Malawi's. More to come on this matter soon.

Contestants from Ecuador, Bolivia and Canada are captured upon arrival

    Last Update: 11/08
Miss Canada, Tijana Artanauvic was the first contestant to arrive on November 6th. She was followed by contestants from Ecuador, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Poland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan and Peru. This year, the plans to arrive in Hong Kong were cancelled, and the girls flew directly into Sanya. More delegates are expected before tommorrow night's big welcome ceremony. In addition, the delegates

  • Miss World Makes Official Statement
Julia Morley Int'l President of Miss World, has confirmed that 112 contestants are expected to arrive in China this coming weekend. She claims that a few contestants have opted out, but has not confirmed who. This will still be the largest Miss World Pageant ever. The mood in China is much more sombre compared to the previous year. However, China has also hosted an explosion of news pageants in that time-span. Has the Chinese pageant market become over-saturated that quickly? For the time being, organizers in Hainan have decided to host the event yet again with the 'Happy Hainan Island Festival.' The final venue for the pageant is expected to be the Crown of Beauty.

Many delegates have been focused on last-minute preparations as they get ready to leave their home countries. For example, Miss Bulgaria - Gergana Guncheva will leave with 7 designers gowns and souvenir gifts for each of the contestants. The 17 year-old is excited about the pageant and has dyed her hair black for a more chic look. In less pleasant news, Katarzyna Borowicz, Miss Poland will be heading to the pageant only a couple of weeks after her father passed away. This will indeed be a very difficult pageant for her.

  • The impact of global voting on the pageant
In a bold new move, the Miss World Organization has decided to do away with the traditional set of judges in its pageant. The judges will only offer commentary, but the viewers will cast their vote via phone, text messaging, interactive TV or online, starting with the Miss World You Decide Program one week in advance. The intention is to make Miss World more of a reality-style show and bring in more audience interest in pageants. Audience participation in choosing pageant winners around the world has made a dramatic entrance in the last few years. In 2001, Miss World first introduced public voting as a percentage of the final results. This continued throughout 2002 and 2003. The big question is, "Does this change anything?" One can only wonder...In a clarification statement released at www.missworld.tv, the organization says the following: Ten points will be allocated to every country, depending on who receives the top ten votes in that country, total.

    FINAL CONTESTANT REVIEW

    Fast-Track Winners.
1)MEXICO: Her strong points are her height, modelling capabilities, presence and modern look. Miss World usually has a more sweet demeanor, but she could break into the final five and court. Winning is not totally out of the question.
2)WALES: The best this nation has sent to date, but a safe bet to not go any further.
    3) USA: Her major factor is based in strong stage presence and excellent communication skills and confidence. Miss World wants to market more in the America's this time, so the possibility of her clinching the title are VERY STRONG.
    4) ANTIGUA: She is certainly very pretty and has an amazing voice, but her chances to making it past the top 15 are limited.
    5) AUSTRALIA: Sarah has it all. Facial beauty borders on that of Rosanna Davison. Add to that excellent communication skills, and a type of personality - classy, sophisticated, sweet - that Miss World loves. Chances for her win are VERY STRONG.

    Home-Court Advantage
CHINA: At this point in time, it seems highly unlikely that Jian Yang will bring China its first Miss World title. The big question here is, where does she stand? Court, top 5 finalist or just in the top 15? Her host country status obviously means something!
An Org. Favorite? - There is an additional girl who almost feels like a fast-track winner because of all of the events she has placed in - TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: When she speaks, you can sense the confidence. Her face is striking and she knows how to work the ramp very well. She seems like a sure Top 15 bet, and has a chance to make it into the top five.

    AFRICA
Chances are, and I am pretty sure of this, that Africa will only be graced with one semi-finalist. However, surprises can happen. My pick this year is clear: ANGOLA (Silvia Anair). A delegate who I earlier wrote off came on strong in the pre-pageant activities. She has striking looks, is constantly fashionable, and has a great, outgoing personality and presence. I even believe she has chances to make the top five with luck, but probably no further. Next in line is ETHIOPIA, who is very pretty but lacks charisma and presence that make Angola more dominating. Others to look out for: EGYPT, who has not met up to expectations, and BOTSWANA, who is a solid competitor overall, but doesn't 'stick out'.

    ASIA & OCEANIA
China is surely in, and Australia represents Oceania, but will Asia/Oceania produce more finalists? My instinct is that at least one more will grace the finalists. Leading the possibilities is the absolutely beautiful THAILAND. However, what she has in facial beauty, she lacks in stage presence and charisma. Here is one girl I can see easily clinching the Miss World crown, and just as easily slipping out of the finalists group. It is hard to argue the merits of INDIA, who ranks right behind. She also has a tremendous amount of facial beauty, plus charisma and stage presence. She is obviously not India's next Miss World, but has great chances of advancing into the 15-5-3. Other girls to watch out for: CHINESE TAIPEI; The Chinese press/audience has given her a very warm reception and she definitely has the physical qualities to place, but this would be a mostly political move. PHILIPPINES could be another surprise, and VIETNAM as well. She is really cute!

    CARIBBEAN
The Caribbean already has Antigua in and Trinidad & Tobago virtually in. Is there room for more? Probably not, but if someone else is there, it will be DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, who is a good overall package but would be a good marketing move. Puerto Rico is an outside possibility, but has not met expectations at all so far, while her two predecessors outperformed.

    AMERICA'S
The America's already have both USA and Mexico in and fiercely contending for the crown. But chances are that 2-3 delegates from the region will be joining them in the semi-finals. My eyes are on four delegates for now. PERU has tremendous facial beauty, but needs more energy when taking the stage. Still, she has a sweet demeanor and was my best bet for many months. I still believe that she has a strong chance of taking the title, but she could just as easily be left out. The second one is BRAZIL, who has the height and all the necessary physical attributes to make it, but more of a model demeanor. Her chances of making the cut are excellent, and she has chances to take herself into the next round and by chance of luck, win. Following her is ECUADOR, a sexy blonde who has come on as a real surprise and has a real chance to make it, but may be a bit too pageant patty for the pageant. In contrast to that is the super-modern and stylishly dressed PARAGUAY. While she does not possess the 'sweet demeanor', her overall packaging stands out and she has a real chance to make it. VENEZUELA and BOLIVIA seem to have lost their impact, but either one could provide a surprise.

    EUROPE
Finally, we have the most baffling continent: Europe. So far, we only have Wales guaranteed, but 2-3 more delegates are likely to be added. Frankly speaking, out of all the finalists to be determined, we are left with the most open field here. Topping my list are two delegates: SPAIN and RUSSIA, both who manage to combine height, sex appeal, and modelling capabilities with the sweet demeanor quality. I do not get the feeling this year's Miss World will come from Europe again, but there is always a chance. Besides those two, there is a slew of competitors I feel could make the cut, possessing qualities such as sophistication, style, facial beauty and so forth: NETHERLANDS, BELGIUM, GREECE, FRANCE and from the Eastern side: POLAND, SLOVAKIA, ALBANIA, CZECH REPUBLIC.

Disclaimer: The most important thing in Miss World is, anything can happen and will happen!
