What is Acupuncture? Over 2,000 years ago, the Chinese began mapping precise points on the human body that could be stimulated by inserting hair fine needles to treat specific health problems. Modern electromagnetic research confirms the location of these points. Today, a wide range of illnesses and disorders is successfully treated with acupuncture, often in combination with herbal remedies. Most of the time, needles are inserted from 1/4 to 1 inch deep. Patients should expect to feel some cramping, heaviness, distention, tingling, or electrical sensation around needles where the flow of energy (qi) is blocked. In China, these sensations are considered to be painless (bu tong) but many Westerners experience them as mild types of pain or discomfort that generally fade as the session progresses, giving way to feelings of warmth and relaxation. Only sterile, disposable needles are used. As with any medical course of treatment, the number of necessary visits depends on the history and severity of the ailment.
What is Chinese Herbal Medicine? Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) predates acupuncture by over 1,000 years in its written history, and in professional practice is even older. It is easily the oldest medical system in the world, and primarily uses natural herbal remedies. The mot significant difference between TCM and Western fold medicine is that TCM uses pattern diagnosis as well as symptom diagnosis. Pattern diagnosis is the analysis of your signs and symptoms, emotional temperament, and the overall composition of your body. Patients are given herbal prescriptions that treat not just individual symptoms but the whole person. Herbal prescriptions have extremely low toxicity compared to even common over-the-counter Western drugs, and therefore have maximum healing benefits with little or none of the side effects that are an acknowledged part of Western medicine. Because herbs are concentrated and taken in liquid form, results can be noticed almost immediately.
