Hi,

I was moping around in a bookstore again (love to do that) and found

this book in the filmsection that had a piece about HC on pages 98 - 100

(I'm sure that this is old news for some of you, or maybe most of you,

but I hadn't seen or heard of this book before and i'm sure I'm not the

only one...):

Screen Dreams

Fantasising lesbians in film

Clare Whatling

1997

ISBN: 0719050677

Manchester University Press

The back of the book said:

Should a lesbian film represent lesbians fairly or are lesbian

psycho-killers just that much more fun to watch? What, after all, is a

lesbian film? Is it defined by its characters or the audiences who

invest in them? Is it the most interesting aspect of films, as Clare

Whatling argues here, the audiences who watch them?

From Meryl Streep to Jodie Foster, Maidens in Uniform to Heavenly

Creatures, Clare Whatling provides an engaging introduction to some of

the more complex areas of contemporary film theory, whilst developing

new accounts of the relationship between the audience and the film text.

***

I stopped writing after this because I already looked pretty dumb,

rewriting the back of a book...*grin* It costs around 55 dutch guilders,

about 28 US dollars.

Take care,

Marloes

Hi Creatures,

Sorry to get semi-off topic but I thought that I'd mention that I'd just

seen Michael Winterbottom's (of Jude fame) "new" film "Welcome to

Sarajevo", because it's totally knocked me off my feet. And It's one of

few

times since seeing Jude that I've left the cinema with that strange

feeling

of not depression but thoughtfulness.

It's the highly topical story of a British news reporter who smuggles a

girl out from Sarajevo to save her from the terrors of war. It's got

great

acting (Dillane, Tomei and Harrelsen) and some really horrific scenes.

Winterbottom really knows how to push those emotional buttons. And

there is

a connection with Jude in it, because we're shown dead babies too in

this

one. Phew, some girl who sat next to me burst out in sobbing cries after

that scene. I'll venture so suggest that it's a better film than

Schindler's List, or rather I liked it better than Schindler's List, not

that I find SL bad or anything like that.

Has anybody else seeen it ?

Cheers,

*Passer borovnia*

Hi,
I just dropped on "The Borovnian Archives"
(/Hollywood/Lot/8826/). Nice to read some
information about other creatures in the "Mailing List"-section. Great!
Sad that only a few wanted to share their personal data. BTW, if there
are enough pics to build up a member gallery (hope mine arrived)? This
is likely the one and only way to see each other. Or is there any chance
to meet one of you in northern Germany?

Depends. Is Spangdahlem in northern Germany? 'Cause that will be our

Your 'duty station'? Aren't your here of your own free will?
Unfortunately that is more in the middle of (almost southern) Germany.
But if anyone plan a trip to 'Wilhelmshaven', 'Oldenburg', 'Bremen',
'Hamburg', 'Hannover' or nearby we could seize the opportunity to meet.

Not really...the military sends us where it wants us to go (currently
Japan...waiting for orders to Spangdahlem...)
Then again, when the time comes, at least I know I've got someone to

Small world? You betcha...I'm from a teeny tiny town in Florida, and

now we

are stationed in a teeny tiny town in Japan, right? Well, for the past

three years, a girl that I not only went to high school with, but was

in my

French class, was stationed here too....tres odd.

Sorry for not having answered this before. I bought another computer and

it took me a while to get rid of that hideous Windows 98 that came on

the package (no offense intended, Jean...). The only problem I still

have is lack of time, I'm finishing my undergrad so there are tons of

things to do until next month. But I'll be working on the member

database anyway.

> Sad that only a few wanted to share their personal data.

Indeed... Hey people, don't be shy! If anyone's worried about sending

personal info, please remember that you don't have to fill ALL the

fields on the form.

> BTW, if there

> are enough pics to build up a member gallery (hope mine arrived)?

Yes, Frank, but I have only yours and pics from Charles and Marloes,

apart from my own (yes, now I have a scanner!). I know that many of you

have your pics online, so please send me the links so I can get them.

And, again, if privacy is your concern, I can share the member gallery

link only on the list, not on the page.

:*

Juliana.

Then I can ask you some things in german (your family's moving overseas,

visiting relatives in Germany, living in Virginia vs. living in

somewhere in Germany etc.)?

Just let me know if this bothers you or if you would also like to talk a

bit in german.

Greetings from Germany,

Heavenly Creatures is turning against me! The other night, my sister
Char
wanted to play cards, but I'd hidden them, and I told her if she knew
where
they were, I'd play with her. She just put on a KW accent and declared,
'they're on my *lungs*'... I *had* to play with her after that even
though I
didn't want to. It's very annoying.

I was thinking, the other day, how I wish I could watch HC again for the
first time... I wasn't really paying that much attention the first time.
::sighs:: Oh well. I think I must have watched a couple of scenes
reflected
in my mirror, because every time I watch them, I feel like they're
backwards.

I'm just rambling now.

I've thought this many times, Alisha. I remember, I hired the video
when
I was housesitting for my parents; I'd been trying to get it for 3 days
and it was always out. Then it was in, & I brought it home, watched it
after lunch, and thought, 'Hmm, that was good, I'll watch that again
tonight'. (This was back in May '96, but I remember quite clearly all
the
details apart from actually how it felt to watch the film).

Then I watched it again at 10pm (how could I have waited so LONG?) and
thought, 'Hmm, that was VERY good' and wrote down some of the lines and
songs from the soundtrack in a notebook. I remember in particular I
loved
all the things about the Saints, and especially the diary entries from
the
period when Pauline was staying with Juliet, and they discovered IT.

The next morning I had to leave to come home, so I didn't have time to
watch again, but I remember playing through some of the early scenes and
thinking 'I have to buy a VCR because I have to watch this film again.
Soon'.

I'd give a lot to relive those moments! but their loss is part of what
makes them special, I guess.

Happy thoughts!
Phil

I know what you mean. For me the closest thing to reliving that first

viewing is not through watching the actual movie but by things like

listening to music i was playing a lot at that time. For example

whenever i listen to leonard cohen's 'the partisan' and 'so long

marianne' all those first viewing emotions come back to me. It's

weird.

Oh yeah and the wonderful smell of earl grey tea has the same effect.

Don't know why. Hey i never said i was normal.

Actors usually say they don't care about this things. They don't take

things too seriously, and they don't care if they have millions of fans

and they won tons of awards. Personally- I don't buy it. They are human

after all- and if "regular people" care if people love them or not, why

shouldn't celebrities? And if I'm wrong and they really don't care- they

are very misreble people because they can't approsiate anything and

that's a very bad quality. What do you think about this subject?

Kate has been publicly excited about being nominated for Oscars and

grateful for the Empire award. I assume she just finds "best Body" and

"Sexiest" awarded by Nivea and such a bit off the mark as far as

recognition is concerned.

Kate is a professional actress, not a starlet.

The LFF is amazing. I saw the brilliant Forgotten Silver there 2 years

If you live near London, keep your eyes open, because the NFT

Yeah, I noticed another one along those lines when I was in Brit Lit

class

the other day, talking about the word "minster" meaning church...ok what

I'm trying to say is that Kate's been in two films now in which the

cities

have had similar names... "christchurch" and "Christminster"... how odd,

yet how pleasing.

I saw it at the movie theatre on a huge screen and it was a truly

why be

If you want another tip, go see "Nelly et monsieur Arnaud" it's one of

Kate Winslet Ties the Knot

Kate Winslet has taken the plunge. The Oscar-nominated

Titanic actress married assistant film director Jim

Threapleton in a super-secret ceremony at a church in

Reading, England, on Sunday.

The surprise nuptials were kept as quiet as the young couple's

summertime engagement, which was only revealed last

month. At the time, Winslet coyly said she and her beau were

probably going to wed next summer.

Winslet, a frequent target of the paparazzi, wanted her

wedding to be a private affair, and for the most part she got

her wish, as news of the nuptials leaked out only at the last

minute.

About 150 guests, including Winslet's Sense and Sensibility

co-stars (and lovebirds) Emma Thompson and Greg Wise,

were on hand for the afternoon wedding at the All Saints'

Church in southern England, where the Winslet family has

worshiped since Kate was a child.

Winslet, 23, wore a cream-colored, Edwardian-styled,

pearl-encrusted gown by Givenchy, accented with a pearl

droplet on her forehead. Threapleton, 25, wore a dark suit.

After the simple, 30-minute ceremony, the couple emerged from the

church and kissed passionately as they were showered with confetti.

They briefly posed for photographs, and Winslet said she felt

"absolutely wonderful."

"It was quite amazing," said the happy bride. "It was the most amazing

day of our lives."

Rev. John Mortiboys, who performed the ceremony and has known Kate

since she was a little girl, said the wedding "was tremendously relaxed

and happyŠThey were trying to keep everything as secret as possible

because you can imagine what it is like in the glare of the publicity

all the time."

The wedding was followed by a reception at a 17th century pub.

This was the first marriage for both Winslet and Threapleton. The

couple met last year on the Morocco set of her upcoming film, Hideous

Kinky, where Threapleton served as a third assistant director.

"When you know, you know," Winslet said October 16 after announcing her

engagement. "That's what I've been told all my life and now I knowŠI

knew instantly. I thought 'Yep I'll have that.'"

Titanic star in low-key wedding

[Photo caption]Kate Winslet and her new husband Jim Threapleton

The actress Kate Winslet has outwitted the gossip columnists and

married at her local church away from the prying cameras of

newspaper photographers.

The 23-year-old actress tied the knot with fiance Jim Threapleton in a

low-key wedding at her family's local church in Reading, Berkshire.

About 150 guests - including Primary Colours star Emma Thompson

and her boyfriend Greg Wise - crammed into All Saints' Church for a

traditional Anglican ceremony.

Jim, a 25-year-old assistant film director, was ushered in by a team of

minders.

Designer wedding dress

His bride, wearing a cream gown by French designer Givenchy,

arrived later in a Mercedes.

The couple had tried to keep the wedding secret and the bride's

mother laid a trail of subterfuge for Fleet Street's finest.

The couple were married by Father John Mortiboys, who taught Kate

and her sisters Beth, 19, and Anna, 26, at St Mary and All Saints'

Church of England primary school in the town.

Fr Mortiboys said:"The whole thing was tremendously relaxed and

happy.

'Pressure of success'

"They were trying to keep everything as secret as possible because

you can imagine what it is like in the glare of the publicity all of the

time.

"Since the success of Titanic the family have been under

tremendous strain from the pressure of Kate's success."

Fr Mortiboys said no hymns were sung during the 30-minute service

and the couple exchanged simple and plain wedding rings.

The wedding reception is taking place on a riverboat on the Thames.

It's called "Hideous Kinky" based on a novel by Esther Freud. It had

it's UK

premire at the London Film Festival last week on the 17th, and should

be on

nationwide release soon. As for the rest of Europe i don't know, i

you try the internet movie database http://www.imdb.com

despite having it's premeire at the film festival it is not scheduled

Just wanted to throw a bit into the pile regarding Kate's next

project...

I was really fortunate to get to see it in the LFF last week and

thought it

was fabulous...a really great thing to look forward to next year. :)

What I've heard as far as release goes...is February for the UK, and

sometime

after for the US. It's a co-production with France...and it's had a

screening

there as well as London...so, I'd imagine that it will be released

around the

same time as the UK in France, if not the whole of Europe.

Happy Thanksgiving...having just come home from almost a month in

England I

feel absolutely bombarded with Americanisms! Grrrr! But, I'm absolutely

content in knowing that I've actually finally got an NZ cut of HC to

keep me

happy!!! :)

I am definitely looking forward to seeing this film. It'll be nice to

see

Kate in a sort of smaller scale film again.

Actually it varies a lot. For instance, I remember seeing Before Sunrise

(1995) in Denmark a few weeks before it opened in the UK and vice versa

with other films. But to quote Meja I guess "it's all about the money"

when

and where they think a market will be potentially open to a certain

film. E

g I think that There's Something About Mary will drawn every other

comedy

opening here the next few weeks.

Hey congrats! Wonderful isn't it ? For my part this will be a Sense and

friends

and a lot of glogg and aebleskiver yum.

Probably you all know this already, but I read it for the first time
today:

*** Titanic star Winslet weds

LONDON (Reuters) - British actress Kate Winslet, co-star of the
blockbuster movie Titanic, married her boyfriend Jim Threapleton in a
low-key ceremony Sunday marked by tight security. Bouncers checked
invitations at the door of the family's church in the town of Reading
after details of the event leaked out. The pair announced their
engagement last month, but said the wedding would probably take place
next year. The couple emerged to a warm reception from well-wishers
and were showered with confetti as they kissed passionately. The
bride wore a cream Givenchy dress studded with pearls and sported a
pearl pendant on her forehead.

Hi all,

Saw this in a recent issue of the street paper Inpress here in
Melbourne, Australia. I figured you'd all be interested, so I've
transcribed the article (any errors are almost certainly mine!):

Matricide - The Musical

Murder Ballads

For anyone who has seen the New Zealand feature film Heavenly Creatures
which is based on a story of matricide that occurred in Christchurch
during the 1950s, there is a least one scene that must immediately come
to mind.

Following the opening credits, where perennial and sunny images of the
city, post Second World War leisurely roll by, the film cuts to a chase
seen through the eyes of two teenage girls as they run breathless and
hysterical through thick scrub. The first scene ends with the camera
turning back on them, and the final, horrific image is of their
terror-stricken faces splattered with blood.

The potency of this scene is in its dichotomy. Despite being aware of
the girl's crime, the viewer is polarised and perhaps tricked into
considering the possibility that the two may be victims. But what are
they victims of? An attack? An accident? Or, as the film makers
suggest, of desires that snap like rubber bands in a society measured in
restraint and morality?

Australian writer Kathleen Mary Fallon was also intrigued by this true
story of two girls "who fell in love and murdered the mother that tried
to separate them." During their intense relationship the two penned a
series of writings including an opera, from which Fallon conceived
Matricide - The Musical. Although based on the story, Matricide also
explores its own concerns, says actor Deanne Flatley.

"It combines that story with other aspects of daughter/mother
relationships," she says. "And it looks at the whole notion of how
girls do actually separate from their mothers as they become women.
This includes how that relates to their own personal drives and whether
they become the people their inner drives are telling them to become,
and how much that is curbed by their socialisation." It's also been
given a contemporary setting, Flatley explains, because it lends itself
to a universal, almost customary, theme of mother/daugher relationships.

"What I've noticed during these mother/daughter scenes is that they are
very similar to scenarios that happened to me or my girlfriends. In
that sense what it's capturing is the ritual that mothers and daughters
play out - perhaps they change a little with time - and the way the
scenes are scripted it's very easy to identify with them. So no doubt
my mother can relate to them as well. There's something timeless about
them, some of these interactions are changing, but despite the feminist
movement, they are changing very slowly.

That is one reason why Flatley is not happy calling Matricide a feminist
play. "Okay, it's definitely a female play. It's looking at what
females could be like if they are allowed to just be 'female', without
restrictions. But I don't want to say it is solely a feminist play,
because it doesn't strike me like that."

"The piece is really about asking yourself how much are you made up of
other people's expectations and how much is you, and is there something
inside you, this crazy mad person who could rear its head at any stage?
That anger, which in this case leads to a murder, is so profoundly
distressing simply because it is created by a female, and I think
Kathleen links that very well. She believes that a lot of passivity and
depression in women is explained by an underlying anger of feeling
trapped. So this piece is about seeing the anger expressed. Granted
it's expressed in a unacceptable way, but that's often the nature of
repressing something and then letting it go."

It was this heavy subject matter, as well as several other
considerations that initially created a few reservations for Flatley,
how plays one of the teenagers, Impassionata. " I was pretty
apprehensive about it all," she explains, "working with a cast of only
women and knowing there was going to be nudity and lesbianism, and I
started to wonder what the energies could be like." With this in mind
Flatley made a date to meet with her co-star Elizabeth O'Hanlon before
rehearsals began to discuss her concerns. O'Hanlon quickly put her mind
at ease. "It's kind of worked really well," Flatley adds. "Elizabeth is
very different to me and this works on stage. We both have just thrown
ourselves in and even though we're completely different, there's an
incredible unity - a oneness."

Fierce, intense and confronting, Matricide - The Musical is also packed
with "acidic charm" thanks to Fallon's ear for "razor-edged humour".
Produced by the mischievous and often irreverent Chamber Made Opera
Company, directed by Angela Chaplin (artistic director of Fremantle's
Deckchair Theatre) and aided and abetted by composer Elena Kats-Chemin
(the 1996 recipient of the Sounds Australian Award for Best
Composition), the piece may not be for the faint hearted but is sure to
be an evening of energised entertainment.

"Angela says she directs by the "goose bump" principle," Flatley
explains. "If she feels the goose bumps she knows she's hit it. I think
she's felt that quite a few times."

Matricide the Musical is performed at the Unallocated Space (Studio 45),
45 Sturt St, Southbank, until Saturday 5th December.

A very interesting article, thanks Paul!

Hmmm, it's an important subject, although I've hardly seen anyone
discussing it on HC or the case itself... But it is intriguing how a
feminist, er, "female" play can have a title like "Matricide". Sounds
like something nearer "Obsession" or Medlicott's analysys. Of course, it
is a matricide, but if she claims to have written a play about female
relationships, it seems to me kinda strange.

And a musical? Hey, creatures, remember those jokes about HC transformed
into a musical? Guess it became true in a way :)

Anyway. Paul, I'm looking forward to your comments on the play!

:*
Juliana.

Hi,

Due to lack of time (and, sadly, desire, et cetera -- it's been a

long 2 years or so), I've come to the conclusion that HeavenlyWeb

has come to an end.

I was always promising myself that I'd keep updating the site, but

the fact that I kept letting myself down -- and others -- by not

updating this site, was a great disservice. Rather than see this

continue, I have made the tough decision to close the site.

A tip of the hat to everyone else around the world, for their continued

interest, fanaticism and discourse in, of, and about, the mesmerizing,

unforgettable, blissful film, "Heavenly Creatures."

This mailing list shall continue, so long as there is interest, and I

have a server to host it.

Please, no sad goodbyes. There is more reason now, than ever

before, for someone else to put up a "HC" webpage. Good luck, and

thanks for all the support and help I received over the years with

the webpage. I'll never forget this wonderful experience.

thanks,

Bryan,

This is about my 5th time writing a letter to you, the first was

answered about as rudely as one can imagine, in all caps if I remember

right. I have no doubt that you will surely ignore this email as well.

However, I felt to write for several reasons. You stated in your email

that by not updating the site was a "great disservice" and while I may

believe that, I also believe that taking the site down and putting it

back up as much as you have has been an even GREATER disservice. People

appreciated your page and continued to religiously visit. All you needed

to do to please everyone was move the page to a GeoCities server, or

another server with quite a large bandwidth, set up the site, and leave

it there with a note of no further updates. Everyone would be fine with

this, but apparently you've noted *several times more than neccasary*

that your personal life and time has completely prevented your updating

of the site. I really have to say I don't believe that to be true. Every

American has at least ONE free hour a day, that's the truth. You just

choose not to bother with the site anymore, and that's quitting. The

real gift to us HC lovers would be for you to have never even created

the site, especially since now after such a long time you're dropping

everything and quitting.

You try desperately to compose yourself as some sort of scholarly

gentleman to the list, but I've seen your real side, and it's showing

true now. Quitting must feel very good for you. It is the easiest way

out for you. God forbid anyone else should benefit.

For the last time,

Laurin McNiff

Oh my, what's all that??? Ahem, if anyone's interested in my opinions,

here they are.

Well, I really don't understand what's the big deal with updating

HeavenlyWeb, since everything that's there is coherent, has lots of info

already and contains some stuff no one else could be responsible for

(like Mel's letter, for instance). It's already a site with a beginning

and an end, if you understand what I mean. Of course, every webmaster

knows that the idea of a site is to be constantly updated, but that's

not necessarily valid for every occasion. Adam takes care of current

updates and Laurin, me and many others have brought new stuff for

everybody who's interested on HC. As long as the movie exists, there

will be at least someone who's interested in sharing info about it,

that's why I decided to create the Borovnian Archives.

Bryan, don't worry about excuses. People change interests, that's

perfectly normal. As much as you still love HC, it's clear that you

don't want to carry on with that, even because you don't really post

here anymore (yes, I've read some of the old posts). Leaving the site

there the way it is has nothing to do with it, it has a life of its own

now. Just look at your logs, Bryan...

The "great disservice" is really to think that no one values your work

just because it's old stuff. Good for me that one day I sat down in

front of the computer and backed up all your pages. It's just a pity

that the links kept breaking, because you were constantly removing parts

of HeavenlyWeb.

When you put something on the Internet, it's not yours anymore. The

whole world owns it.

:*

Juliana.

I thoroughly agree. I've made quite a few websites in my time on the

net, and I have not yet taken a single page "DOWN" off the net. They're

all there. Though some may not be updated, I would never have the heart

to just wrench them down from public view, because in truth if I

did-someone would be dissapointed.

I agree as well. I myself made a fairly large (no longer updateable due

to server

shutdown!) site dedicated to HC. But, to be honest, I wouldn't mind if

Bryan took

the site down, it's just that he's gone from taking it down, to keeping

it up, to

taking it down and so forth. I explained and bestowed my extreme

enchantment with

his site, and to no avail..Bottom line: Make a decision!:)

That's right, excuses don't matter. However, how many times need they be

uttered?

Once is enough, and it only takes once to understand. The HC fans are an

understanding

bunch! However, what will it hurt to leave the site fully functional and

no longer updated?

Just take 3 hours one day, redo the site, and leave it, with a word of

warning to new members

that they missed the golden days. I personally, would prefer this

alternative as opposed to the "It's down! It's up!" method. As for Bryan

posting, I can tell it's been ages since he

posted anything in his leisure that was positive about he or the site,

and the sad part is:

I've been on this list for a year and a half now. So, this whole thing

has been lingering

far too long.

Of course, everyone values the work of HeavenlyWEB, who wouldn't? It was

THE first HC site,

the first show of dedication and love to the film we all adore. EVERYONE

appreciates it.

And indeed, it IS a pity that the site is (Finally?) going down into the

hell of cancelled pages.

> When you put something on the Internet, it's not yours anymore. The

> whole world owns it.

Indeed this much is true. You make a page for the public to enjoy-not

just yourself. And,

in doing so you consider everyone's opinion rather than giving people a

taste of what might

be, then cruelly snatching it back.

That's just me. Personally I don't see the huge hardship of taking a few

hours to redo the major part of the site so it's somewhat navigable, and

then thrusting it back onto the web

for all to enjoy eternally. Surely more than 3 hours have been spent on

that site already.

Regards,

Laurin

Yes, please consider this option. It would hopefully be the first time I

can see Heavenlyweb without too much broken links...

At least people will be able to find the place where it all started for

HC-fans, the official home for the mailinglist. For updates we could

always go to one of the other HC-sites.

Too bad I missed the golden days,

Cut Bryan a break, will you? How he chooses to spend his time is up

to him, and he owes nobody here ANYTHING. You exercised very poor

judgement in your reply if your aim were to get him to change his

mind rather than browbeat him for something he clearly feels he

cannot continue to maintain.

Especially considering the fact that Bryan has repeatedly tried

to get others to continue the work with HeavenlyWeb, but with

apparently much luck. I'll leave him (if he so chooses) to

fill in the details.

In the mean time, it would really be in your interest to retract

your last post and apologize to him.

Bryan is one of the most polite, diligent, hardworking people I have

pleasure to meet. I am proud to have him as a coworker and friend,

so I excuse your comments as uninformed and trust you will exercise

good judgement in these matters for the future.

Oh no..you can't mean this. What happened to everyone who offered help?

To the list:

My sincere apologies you have to witness this. However, I feel

I must respond to Laurin to the list, as she posted her original

complaint to the list. I don't intend to carry this debate further.

Hi Laurin,

Regarding your post (diatribe?) to the list:

---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

If I did respond to you in all caps, at some time in the past,

I apologize. (I don't recall the specific incident, but if you

say it happened, it could have.) This is one of the reasons

why I can't host the website, and solicit feedback -- I don't

have the time or capacity to handle it with the attention and

consideration it deserves.

I wouldn't have even noticed your post to the list, had a friend

of mine not alerted me to it. (I truly *do not* have free time

to participate in this activity any more, as much as that saddens

me. I rarely read the list any longer.)

There were no bandwidth issues, etc. regarding hosting the page.

The only things lacking were time, energy, and a genuine interest

in keeping the site updated. (I'd rather not go into laborious

detail, but I feel you've forced me to, that I may save face in

front of all the Heavenly Creatures folks.)

I'd been updating HeavnelyWeb for 2.5, maybe 3 years. Other

things in my life have taken precedence, to updating a web page.

While I can appreciate the fact that you feel it is a greater

disservice for me to take the site down, and appreciate the veiled

compliment, do keep in mind that this is my decision, and I am

not compelled to keep a site up, just because it would

inconvenience you.

I'm sorry if you feel I have noted "*several times more than

neccasary*" [sic] about my personal life, etc. taking a toll

on my ability to update the site -- but it's true. Sorry

for telling the world about this; I guess it really was

not necessary at all (according to you). As for everyone

having "at least ONE free hour a day," would you be so bold

as to assume I have nothing else to do with that "ONE free

hour a day"? Anyway.

I must respectfully disagree with your deduction that it

would have been better for me to never have hosted the site

at all. I learned much about web design, and gained much

personal reward and a little bit of fame, by placing the

site online. Also, indirectly, my hosting of the site led

me to contact Melanie Lynskey, who graciously wrote back and

let me know what a great person she was, by bestowing a part

of her to me in the form of a personal letter. The site

also brought me in contact with the fabulous Jean Guerin,

and a very kind member of the New Zealand Film Commission,

who very kindly provided press materials and photos from

the movie. Hosting the site was a glorious experience.

I shall never regret -- or forget -- it.

Regarding your last paragraph, which is a personal attack

about "gentlemanly" status and such forth, quitting,

etc.: I am sorry that you think my closing the site

connotes I am a quitter, loser, etc. Instead of focusing

on the negative, perhaps you could be thankful for the time

the site was online. Keep in mind that what I provided

was free. I never charged for it. It was never guaranteed

to be up forever. Please relax.

Quitting does feel good to me, because I no longer have this

personal struggle between work, my time away from work, my

family, and The Website. The Website was sucking up lots of

my time, which was fine in the beginning. However, my life

has changed drastically since then, and, sadly, this means the

site must be closed down.

I really don't understand the tone of your email. What is

your goal? Are you trying to bully me into placing the site

back online? That approach doesn't work with me, and I

doubt it would work with anyone else.

Next time, before sending a letter with that tone, please

follow some advice: Take a break, re-read your letter, and

reconsider whether its contents are genuinely valid and

postworthy. Had you had some personal issue with me (for

whatever reason), I really would have appreciated your

sending it to me privately, rather than sully the list.

Laurin, I don't dislike you, or wish you ill will. However,

I think it is a sad day, indeed, when a person who had hosted a

pretty good website, is publicly vilified by another person,

purely because the person decided he could no longer host a

webpage. I wish you maturity, I wish you understanding, and

I wish you luck.

Respectfully,

b

Laurin,

> You stated in your email

Foremost, I don't think anyone is obligated to keep a site up

unless

you are company and are doing something for-profit.

Plus, I don't agree with this statement. I think that if you're

not

going to keep a site reasonably updated (once a month or so), then it

shouldn't be up in the first place. I do MAKE time for my website (to

keep

things atleast monthly updated). I stick to that general principle as a

web developer (both professionally and as a hobby).

> Every

> American has at least ONE free hour a day, that's the truth.

I WISH this could be true.

I wish I had ONE free hour each day.

No.

My online journal remains untouched since the middle of this month

and

I wish I could keep it updated *every day* (which I could with ONE FREE

HOUR).

I wish I had one free hour a day to work on it, but I don't.

Between

commuting to work (two+ hours commuting each day, where I do work on the

bus), putting in atleast an 8 hour day, typically 10 hours, coming home

and

eating, giving quality time to my partner (I'm sorry but my partner and

my

family come before *ANY* website), etc... well, I just don't have the

time

to update my website. Not all Americans are glued to the television

set (I

am very happy to have the one and a half hours on sunday to watch the

X-files and That 70s Show, which is the *only* television that I watch

regularly these days). My journal and website upkeep occur on

Saturdays...

but I wish I had more time as well. I write articles and do research

for

Metajournals.

A good friend once told me that people MAKE time for things that

they

find important. I'm sorry but my family and my work go before my

personal

website. Those two things are more important. Things like hobbies get

pushed out of the way, and understandably so.

I find the generalization that every American has atleast one free

hour a day insulting to me, a definite type A workaholic (and a proud

American).

> You just

> choose not to bother with the site anymore, and that's quitting. The

> real gift to us HC lovers would be for you to have never even created

> the site, especially since now after such a long time you're dropping

> everything and quitting.

I'm not Bryan but if someone said that to me, implying that I

wasn't a

lover of HC, I would be extremely offended.

Just because I don't have all the time in the world doesn't mean

that

I don't love something just as much as you do. I just have different

priorities. The fact that Bryan spent his time and money to keep up a

BEAUTIFUL site for three years is a wonderful thing (and to be

completely

frank, the HC website was the most beautiful site around in those

days...

the fact that the site design doesn't need to change over the years and

still remain beautiful relative to other websites is testament to the

genius web designer behind it and I applaud bryan as a fellow website

designer and developer). The web is a dynamic creature. It changes,

sites

go away and are manifested again in other forms. For the three years

that

his site was up, it was a wonderful resource.. but things have to change

and move on. Other things become more important to us in life, and

that is

completely understandable.

I want to formally thank Bryan for keeping the website up for so

long.

I loved HC when I first saw it and Bryan's website was the first site I

saw

devoted to the movie. It created a community (like this listserv) for

HC

people to come together many years ago (without it, I'm not sure if we

would have come together. I like Kate Winslet's material, but I'm not

into

joining a listserv devoted to one actor and am currently not a member of

the kw list). There are people that appreciate the genius that was

required to put up the site when it was needed, to serve as a beacon for

HC-lovers everywhere, and has been the point where we have rallied

together

for so long.

Now, that point has to go away, but that doesn't diminish the

wonderful serve that Bryan has provided for so long. I'd like to have

his

leaving to not be a sad one, like Paul and Juliet's. It should be a

happy

bon voyage.. off to other shores and other movies. Perhaps we shall

meet

again in the great tapestry of life (cheeze cheeze cheeze). This knot

of

HC loveliness shall come together maybe in movie-X. Or event-Y. It's

been

a great show. Thanks Bryan. =)

I must agree here. I also have free time but not enough to do

I have to do. I myself have not had time to redo my site. Sometimes

life

has a way of forcing you to prioritize and even things that should take

priority get pushed back.

I understand Bryan's dilemma. Now, somebody else could take the page

Although I'm sorry to see it go, and hope someone may salvage the site

and

keep some of it running, I want to extend thanks to Bryan for running

Heavenly

Web as long as he has. It was the first site I visited regularly on the

internet...along with being the first site for HC and/or Kate that I

came to

know.

I think it's a little rude to attack a webmaster for wanting to take

down a

site, or for not having the time to keep it going regularly. Really,

Bryan

doesn't owe any of us anything...it's his site, and he can do with it

what he

pleases. He obviously has other priorities to take care of, and running

a

website doesn't fall into play with those priorities anymore. We can

complain

about it going away...but, I don't think it's right to personally

attack the

person who runs a site for not having the time to keep it up. He

obviously has

personal reasons that keep him from the site...they are personal, and he

doesn't owe us any more of an explanation than that. We should be

grateful for

the service it's provided while it has.

I hope I'm not starting any kind of war...that's not my aim. If personal

promises and such were made and then broken, that's another story. But,

this

is the internet - not a paying job or family or anything even remotely

as

important in the grand scheme of things. People have reasons for not

being

able to keep up responsibilities, and we have to respect that.

Thanks again, Bryan, for the site. I think it's fabulous...and you

Excerpt from Canterbury College records, 6/5/53: Dr West defends the

college

against vilification on account of its supposed composition of a

'scholarly'

manner and possession of a 'true side'.

"As a scholarly gentleman myself, I feel I must take a moment here to

defend

Brian, Dr Hulme, Dr Medlicott and my learned friends and esteemed

colleagues

on the Canterbury College Council.

The seriousness of this accusation cannot pass without comment, in my

not

inconsiderable estimation, for, given the gravitas with which,

undoubtedly,

this august body must, and does, continue to esteem, nurture and govern

the

generation, refinement and dissemination of scholarly opinion and

learning

(nay, to uphold the very pillars of society itself, which would

otherwise

crumble into dust and be blown to the four winds), and given, too, the

refined sensibility which governs and protects its operation in this

day and

age, when learning comes under increasing attack from the 'popular

arts' and

MTV culture, not to mention the assaults of cinema and gramaphone

recordings; given these things, then, and the many other factors with

which

I must dispense here for fear of distracting from my main topic here

today,

I say to you that any attempt to criticize, vilify, assault, reject,

damn,

coerce, entrap, disdain, foment, or otherwise cause actual or partial

pain

to this august body will not be allowed to pass without severe frowning.

Particularly upsetting is the idea that we of the gown possess a real

side.

As everybody knows, we are totally superficial, having nothing beneath

an

outer layer of pedantry and guff. Ask any Oxbridge man what he keeps

beneath his gown and he will smile, with that secret smile that only a

true

scholar possesses, and say - nothing. For he knows that some day his

interlocutor will learn what all must some day discover amid the rubble

of

life: that the scholar needs no underpants, and that learning goes

naked,

like a new born babe, under the mother's gown."

OK, coming back to the real world for a sec.

Brian! Thanks for the only website I'll probably ever remember; it was

amazing.

Perhaps someone will take it on, if so good; but come on folks, it's

not the

end of the world if it has to go down. It doesn't change how good HC

is,

and there will certainly be other HC-related webpages in the future.

Things

change, after all.

For folk to put a rubric for how to join the mailing list on their

websites

seems an easy and uncontentious solution; I'd say that Adam's 4th World

is

the most important place for that to go. (sorry to put you in a spot,

Adam).

Felicitous and scholarly solicitations to you all!

Phil

Indeed, the letter was quite personal and quite nasty, I had also sent

several other letters offering to help out or take over with

whatever maintenance was needed on HCWEB-all were ignored. Saying that

you

cannot host a site in part because you cannot handle a right way to

respond isn't quite relevant-if that were the case why start a web

site? Not having the time is different, it's understandable. I stated

in my previous letter that everyone has at least one free hour a day

and of course I meant it, however if you truly do not have that time,

then so be it. However, I think a suggestion you should take into

serious consideration would be to spend a few hours rejuvenating the

beautiful site (yes, it is beautiful, I have tirelessly stated so on

more than one occasion) and leaving it online for all to enjoy, with

a note indicating no further updates. That way the site lives on, and

without personal interference.

Exactly my previous points pertaining to the email. None of my letters

were answered except one-one that was full of praise for your site,

responded in such a manner I would have thought you no older than 13.

However, that's in the past. What truly annoyed me was the fact that

HeavenlyWeb has been on and off the air so much! And, here we are again,

wishing good-bye to a site we would much rather keep-again. It's quite

like crying wolf, is it or is it not TRULY going? And, I stress, not

having time is quite acceptable and understandable, it's just that you

seem so utterly quick to drop everything, everything that you yourself

has stated is a 3 year in the making journey.

This is fine. Not having time or energy or genuine interest is to be

expected from every webmaster at some point in time, but why not hear

out keeping the site alive? Why not devote several hours to restoring it

and placing it back into it's glorious throne again on the web? Would

you purchase an old, historic home, restore it, and then leave it to rot

claiming lack of energy? I certainly wouldn't, I'd at least repaint it,

and polyurethane it before letting it be condemned. It's just a

suggestion, one that the majority of the list hopes be taken in

consideration.

Certainly. Other things will do that, and it's to be expected. I have

kept in mind that this is "your decision". No one else could make the

decision. However, when you create a stunning page FOR the people to

enjoy, why take away such a brilliant gift without first taking

suggestions into consideration? "Inconveniencing" the HC web community

isn't what this is about-it's about not depleting a wondrous page, one

that certainly everyone enjoys and would much rather see it live on,

than removed altogether. However, if it pains you that much to

"convenience" us, then do take the site down.

No one said you had "nothing else to do" with that "ONE free hour a day"

And, no one said your personal life was worthless. I admit my words were

rather harsh and not too well put, but keep in mind, a rather nasty "not

thought out" email was sent to me not too long ago, and the sender was

you. Now when I choose to address several issues in a non angelic way, I

get blasted for it by a friend of yours. I am not saying you are a liar,

and I'm not "bullying you" into keeping a site-I'm just fiercely trying

to address several points that I feel must be made. We are certainly

very alike in that respect.

> Hosting the site was a glorious experience.

> I shall never regret -- or forget -- it.

I agree. No one that adores HC will forget it. Which is all the more

reason

to attempt to convince you to leave HeavenlyWen ON the web. Not just for

convenience, but to keep those memories alive and to pass them on to new

HC

fans. That should be understandable.

> Regarding your last paragraph, which is a personal attack

> about "gentlemanly" status and such forth, quitting,

> to be up forever. Please relax.

Indeed I am thankful for the site and it's time online, however, I

already

addressed this to you in a letter that was rather long and well thought,

you

chose to tell me to "bugger off" in a sense, a rather rude "sense" it

was.

I'm not complaining about your site, you as a person or anything else.

I'm

merely firmly debating your decision to "remove" HCWEB. You may do as

you wish

with the site, as it is on your server, etc, but do know alot of fans

will be

crushed, and that a decent suggestion is to rejuvenate it for lost time.

I

realize it was never meant to be forever, but it turned out to be a

gift, and

why take away a gift? I am relaxed, I was before.

Then that is quite sad. As I stated, more than enough before, I realize

your life has interfered, and that's to be expected. However, just

because

you no longer have the time to update it any longer, does not need to

translate to"Take it down!" It COULD be translated to "Make it last

without

the strain of time", if you really wanted that. Somehow I believe you

no

longer want HCWEB to be a part of the HC fan's web life. And if that's

the

case, more than enough of us will be dreadfully dissapointed.

> I really don't understand the tone of your email. What is

> your goal? Are you trying to bully me into placing the site

> back online? That approach doesn't work with me, and I

> doubt it would work with anyone else.

Not at all. Bullying isn't my style. In fact, it repulses me.

My goal was to address the fact that people DO love your site,

and that it WAS a gift, and that people WILL be angry that you're

(finally?) taking the site down. I was merely making my points known

perhaps they were not nicely put, perhaps they were not sugar coated,

but let's remember, your email to ME was not either. That may sound

petty, but, it's true-who's to deem me mature when the same was done

to me not too long ago? "Relax." you said. I was perfectly calm when

writing that email, if I wasn't I could have said worse. But, I

restrained

my "tone" to "painfully blunt" and while I realize it ended up being

sent

to the whole list, it's original intent was NOT to go to the list, I

sent it

without thinking, and so the whole list read my comments-perhaps it was

for the better, for I'm sure if it had not gone to the list, you would

not

even reply, and you said so yourself. Also, this list is a community,

and

I have nothing to hide, especially my feelings and ideas.

> Next time, before sending a letter with that tone, please

> sending it to me privately, rather than sully the list.

"Practice what you preach." I could say. You clearly had not done

the same while addressing me. And, I however did. While I admit *again*

it was not the nicest email in the world, it was not in any way

attempting

to defray what honors you've done, and what excellence you've achieved

on the HeavenlyWEB, it was merely my points addressed rather bluntly.

My sincere apologies to the list-and Bryan, if this was taken

"personally".

It was not my intent.

> Laurin, I don't dislike you, or wish you ill will. However,

> I wish you luck.

Vilified? I don't agree. I was not pleased, and it showed in my email,

other than that, no permanent damage was *or should have been* done.

Of course it is a sad day, you're removing the first HC page ever to

grace the web, and perhaps you should agree-maybe another step can

be taken to avoid crushing the hearts of websurfing HC fans, not

excluding

the ones that so religiously post to this list(also created generously

by you).

I in turn, wish you the same, as we both need every ounce of it at

times.

My last, and final comments: Do think about this decision you've come to

determine. There is another solution, and I can only hope that you

somehow

consider it.

Sincerest Regards,

Laurin

About six month ago I first watched the movie "Heavenly Creatures" and

imediately fell under its spell. I watched it in the german synchronized

version, though (I'm living in Germany). Now I'm looking for the

original

(english) version of HC, but at no shop it seems to be able to purchase

the NZ version.

Has anybody any hints where I can buy the english full-length NZ

I have lurked on this list almost from its inception, and break my

silence

only after considerable thought.

Along with everyone, I was delighted to find HeavenlyWeb. It is, indeed,

one of the finest sites I have ever had the pleasure to visit. I was

sorry

to see its slow dismantling and now, it seems, departure.

I did find meself wondering why could not the site simply be kept in

place

-- if bandwidth and expenditure are not issues -- with a notice stating

"This site will no longer be maintained". This is quite standard

procedure

by webmasters for whom life has intervened, preventing further work on

the

site. It is clear that the site contains far too much in the way of

graphics and information to allow it to be transferred to one of the

freeweb services such as Angelfire.

It is also clear that the site contains much in the way of emotional

reinforcement and practical as well as entertaining information for

people

newly discovering "Heavenly Creatures". As such, its removal from the

web

is unfortunate.

On my personal homepage, I have carried a link to both HeavenlyWeb and

the

Fourth World website, and shall continue to do so. If HeavenlyWeb is

indeed removed from the web, I shall post information as to how to

subscribe to this mailing list.

I am deeply grateful to Bryan for providing HeavenlyWeb and for this

mailing list. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours, and

hope that he will continue occasionally to keep in touch with us.

Peter Jackson said that he likes to have a "fun day" on the set of

whatever movie he's shooting at the time.

On The Frighteners it was a day when the crew were dressed in period

costume, which they wore for the old newsreel footage scene of the

hospital massacre.

On Heavenly Creatures it was a day when everyone on set was in drag,

guys as gals & gals as guys. Transvestites in...emm, I don't know what

:-)

He said there was some pretty good footage of the "drag day" lying

around, which would be fun to put in an SE of Heavenly Creatures at

some point. I don't think he was 100% serious about the SE though :-(

FWIW I think that Heavenly Creatures is a much better movie than The

Frighteners. But that's another story...

Peter is proud of the job he did directing "Frighteners".But Fran told

me

when they were preparing it that it was just "A bubblegum action flick".

They had written it for Zemeckis but didn't expect to shoot it. Then,

after winning the Oscar for Forrest Gump, Zemeckis had his pick of who

to

get as a director so he offered it to Peter. Peter's main reason for

doing the film was that it offered him (and his FX buddy Richard

Taylor)

a chance to work with Rick Baker.

Peter remains the most fun director I've worked with. My first day of

shooting was also the day he did his cameo and he had the most fun

walking around coughing and being disgusting.

On the day I shot the "Third Man" stuff, we went off to see the footage

and when we walked back on set I had the gun in his back. Then I

whipped

it next to his head and wrapped my arm around him and announced some

"changes" in the film. For starters, it would now be entitled "Orson

Those of you who got the news from Mark Kines at Mel's Yahoo Fan Club

already know of her next role on Detroit Rock City, a movie about and

with the band KISS. Until now we didn't have other news on that except

for Mark's note, but today I checked out www.kissasylum.com and they

have a new article that confirms Mel's role. It's on IMDB noo, too.

FILMING

1978 KISS CONCERT for DETROIT ROCK CITY

Thursday, December 3 - Copps Coliseum: 6:30 - 11:30 p.m.

No unreserved admittance. To reserve your space call 1-877-663-6646

Detroit Rock City is the story of four teenaged boys - Edward Furlong

(American History X, Pecker), Guiseppe Andrews

(Independence Day), Sam Huntington (Jungle2Jungle) and newcomer James De

Bello - whose quest to see KISS in concert is

thwarted by a vigilant, ultra-religious mom, but only long enough to

send them scrambling through a series of impish

misadventures that usher them in to manhood and, ultimately, Cobo Hall,

where they finally bask in the glow of their idols. The

film also stars Natasha Lyonne (The Slums of Beverly Hills), Lin Shaye

(Something About Mary), Melanie Lynskey (Ever

After) and Shannon Tweed (No Contest). A "sweet, kind of edgy adventure

comedy with KISS," this coming-of-age story

indeed seems to have it all, and Hamilton is, in the words of associate

producer Tim Sullivan, " the gold at the end of the

rainbow."

BTW, it seems that they're casting extras frequently for the film (you

missed that chance yesterday...) so it's good for you American creatures

to keep checking.

The full article is at

http://www.kissasylum.com/news/Viewmag_article12298.shtml. No other news

on Mel there, though.
