Hey Critters,
I just came back from a press screening of the X-Files movie. (It's
good.
Just don't expect to have anything resolved). There was a trailer for
Ever After before the feature including a nice big close-up of Mel. Her
name is not on the principal credits nor could I spot it on the flash
card at the end.
It was nice to see her up there and smiling though. She's growing up
nicely.
I wouldn't be surprised if more producers become "keen to sign her up"
(BTW, This pretty much illustrates the point I was making last winterb
about Titanic posts and people saying "Less Kate More Mel" and "Enuff
Titanic already". This will happen whenever a HC alumni has a new film
and the bigger the flick the more postings we'll see. We should all be
proud when "the girls" score a new role.

Dear Creatures,
Got this from a film-makers mailing list. Thought it might give an
interesting read. :o)

"6. filmmaker(s) of the week:
The current success of 'The Truman Show,' written by a New
Zealander
(Andrew Niccol) and directed by an Australian (Peter Weir), will
hopefully
encourage film fans worldwide to seek out more talented Australasian
filmmakers, worthy and unheralded as they often are. Case in point is
Colin McKenzie, subject of the recently released documentary 'FORGOTTEN
SILVER' (First Run Features, out now). You'd be forgiven for never
having
heard of McKenzie. Neither had most of his New Zealand countrymen when
this documentary on his life and stunning achievements appeared on
television there in 1996. The TVNZ network was apparently inundated with
calls demanding to know why viewers had never before heard of this
brilliant director whose inventions included the first-ever color film,
the first film with sound, the world's first tracking shot, a
revolutionary film emulsion process using egg whites and flax, and the
first film of manned flight, which was shot, incidentally, on a farm in
NZ
six months before the Wright Brothers flew. The simple answer, of
course,
is that the whole thing was a brilliantly executed hoax, courtesy of the
slightly twisted mind of another talented Kiwi director, Peter Jackson
('Heavenly Creatures,' 'The Frighteners'). Jackson and co-director Costa
Bates not only wrote and star in this funny, tongue-in-cheek
"mockumentary," but they also enlisted the aid of such film luminaries
as
critic Leonard Maltin, actor Sam Neill and Miramax chairman Harvey
Weinstein to throw in their completely straight-faced comments about
McKenzie and his lost epic 'Salome,' the "tins-in-an-old-shed" discovery
of which supposedly set Jackson on this mission to chronicle McKenzie's
story. And while you may think we've spoiled your fun by revealing the
joke -- the film itself plays it straight right to the end, when the
credits roll minus any cast list -- you'd be wrong. The real pleasure of
this film is observing how well the ruse is executed, and the incredible
lengths to which Jackson has gone to construct his history, from the
authentically worn-looking "restored" film clips to the mocked-up news
headlines ("2,000 Dozen Eggs Stolen!") to the enormous "lost city" movie
set that Jackson and other sweaty film historians excitedly unearth in
New
Zealand's deepest, darkest bush. Knowing the low budgets with which
Jackson typically works, it's quite a job. And while the slow
realization
that someone was pulling their leg might have proved a big
disappointment
for New Zealanders keen to celebrate their very own Orson Welles, the
consolation prize, of course, is that they actually *can* claim the
authentically Kiwi talents of Jackson and Bates. (Baker)"

I just joined this list and I thought that I'd introduce myself. I'm
Kasey,
I'm 15 years old, and I saw Heavenly Creatures about a month ago and I
loved
it! My favorite actress is Kate Winslet and that's how I first heard
about
Heavenly Creatures. To make a long story short, I rented the movie, I
was
completely compelled, and I bought it a few days later. Well, that's
about it

Before you start whining that HC isn't included, I'd like to remind you
all HC is a New-Zealand film and the list is from the AMERICAN Film
Institute.
This explains why the greatest Canadian film of all time: an adaptation
of Hamlet set in Canada, starring Max Von Sydow entitled "Strange
Brew",
was not included.
[Canadians on this list are laughing themselves silly while listers in
other countries are taking down the title thinking they're going to
discover something.LOL. "Strange Brew" stars Dave Thomas ('Grace under
Fire') and Rick Moranis ("Honey I did whatever to the kids") as Bob and
Doug McKenzie are pair of typical canadian losers. They do for Canadian
Beer what Cheech and Chong did for Mexican Weed. And yes it IS based on
Hamlet. It is set at Elsinore Brewery!]
There it is often at the top of the list. Sam Neill said he thought HC
was the best film in NZ history.
The Third Man was 57...I thought that was a British Film....hmmmmmm
Well there you go! Bits of HC made it to the top 100.
Now all we need is for James Mason to be declared best actor and Mario
Lanza best singer of all time and we'll know the fourth world is all
around us.

I've done this. I just got a reply with the subject Command/Request
Response . What do I do now??
Simon
P.S. I find unsubcribe threads as annoying as everybody else does. So
when I wanted to unsubcribe i went to
http://www.reflection.org/heavenly/mailinglist.html which as far as I'm
aware is the homepage for this list. This page doesn't say how to
unsubscribe. It says how to get help. So I do that, but instead of
getting
any help I just get a reply that says Command/Request Response. I
guessed
I was supposed to reply to that so I did, but I still didn't get any
help.
Anyway the point is that maybe this list gets so many unsubscribe posts
is because it's difficult to unsubscribe!
P.P.S I not leaving because this list is boring, my email account is
being cancelled

I just unsubscribed (and resubscribed) to test whether the previously
mentioned method was correct.
Upon subscribing, by sending a message of "unsubscribe" to
heavenly-c-request@lists.best.com , you will receive a message whose
subject is "Command/Request Response". That's what I did -= and I opened
the message and read the following:
Command: unsubscribe
unsubscribe <jeffhamilton@mindspring.com> - successful
So it appears that it works.
Did I miss anything during the five minutes I was unsubscribed?

Hiya,
Just a quickie.
Glad to see Jean has a "Connection" with the Nē 1 spot. I was rather
pleased to see that two of the films my Great Uncle (Peter Bull) was in
are in the top 30 ! These are:
17. The African Queen (1951) - The German Captain
26. Dr. Strangelove (1964) - The Russian diplomat
That's my only claim to fame . LOL
just a passing comment..
Stephen
P.S Might be getting my house in the next month or so, so any
suggestions for names for it would be rather fun. ( I havn't told my
other half yet....she does not like HC !) #8-)

I'm impressed! Peter Bull is one of the great character actors of all
time. He was instantly recognizeable yet totally believable in all his
roles.
He worked with Hitchcock, the lucky bugger! ("Sabotage", 1937)
What a face! Perfect for Dickens adaptations (Oliver Twist, 1948) He
was
typecast as "the russian" for a while.
He also played identical twins in William Castle's "Old Dark House"
(1963).
He also was in the original "Doctor Dolittle" (1967)
He was a journalist before becoming a (stage) actor in 1933. Hmmmmm.
Maybe that's why I like him. I'd like to get my hands on one of his
books.
"Dr. Strangelove" is one of my faves. Every one of his scenes is a
major
laugh as he clashes with George C. Scott.

With all this talk about the top 100 American movies (a list, by the
way, which I think is a bit more intended for commercial purposes than
it could be...), I thought it would be interesting to know what would be
your choices, something like our top movies. Maybe not 100 ;), but I
think we all may end up finding similar tastes, as I'm obviously
counting HC on them.
So here's my top 15:
Heavenly Creatures (nooo, don't tell me! :))
Cries and Whispers
2001 - A Space Odyssey
Rear Window
Fantasia
Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau)
The Seven Year Itch
Rebecca
Rashomon
Breathless (Goddard)
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Fried Green Tomatoes
Empire of the Sun
The Sound of Music
Monthy Python and the Holy Grail
I like these movies for various reasons, either because they're really
good or because they represent an important time in my life. Eclectic, I
know. But it would be even more if I put my favourite Ancient Rome
movies (Quo Vadis, Ben-Hur), the Beatle movies, Star Wars... I'm looking
forward to know your choices!
And, well, I miss some HC content posts too (put the blame on me,
also!).
:*
Juliana.

This is an interesting list Joanna. However, one question comes to mind:
Have you seen any movies made before HC? It seems to be the oldest
flick
on your list.
If you like face/off try John Woo's Hong Kong flicks "The Killer" and
"Hard Boiled" starring Chow Yun Fat.
She's the one is ok but the same director made the same film a year
earlier with less money. "The Brothers McMullen" Try that one!
(BTW, I was in a restaurant a little over two years ago, discussing the
Fat-Asia film festival project. At tha table next to us, this girl kept
looking over and staring at me. It wasn't an appreciative stare but I
got
the impression I was being taken apart mentally. Sort of like "maybe if
he wasn't so loud" or "Maybe if he was a little trimmer". All I know is
that I felt scoped like women do when they are between boyfriends and
they mentally amass "spare parts" as they try to figure out what their
next victim will be like. Or worse, she may have been thinking "At
least,
I ain't going out with HIM!". Whatever it was, it didn't feel like I
was
being eyed in a good way. The girl looked familiar but I couldn't
really
place her.
The next day, I walk into a pharmacy and there on the cover of "In
Style"
was that girl, Jennifer Aniston. She was in Montreal and two days
later,
on ET was interviewed with Courtney Cox and the topic kept going back
to
her being between boyfriends.
Since I returned the stare a couple of times (and felt like saying "Why
don't you take a picture, it'll last longer") I figured her jaded look
came from her thinking "Oh! Great! Another guy who wants me because I'm
a
TV star". The irony is I DIDN'T KNOW.
It was really a weird experience.
Needless to say, JA isn't really my type.

Ok, here's mine w/explanations for some:
(and they are in no particular order, nor do I care if they are
American or
whatever, these are just my faves)
1.Imitation of Life
*With Lana Turner and Dorothy Dandridge, this is one of those movies
that
just tears you up. Like Titanic, it's manipulative, but in a good
way. I
cry and cry and cry at the ending.
2.Heavenly Creatures
*Not only are there 1,001 quotable lines, but this movie just makes me
spellbound every time I watch it. Kind of like TO DIE FOR, except that I
would never buy TDF, and I bought HC after the first time I saw it.
Would
have LOVED to have seen it in the theaters.
3.Welcome to the Dollhouse
*This movie is painful to watch because it is so incredibly real. I
like
the fact that the ending was NOT your typical happy ending, too.
4.Chasing Amy
*I'm a HUGE fan of Kevin Smith, and this movie is his best so
far....his
most mature and believable.
5.The Commitments
*I'm a sucker for Irish accents, ok? And this movie struck so many
chords
with someone who had *TRIED* managing a local band through its ups and
downs.
6.Dazed and Confused
*Totally different style from HC, but left me feeling the same way, as
if I
*KNEW* these people, and there were lots of parallels to my own
existence
(in both of them, actually)
7.The Little Mermaid
*ALthough I was originally pissed off by the happy ending, much
preferring
the original story by HC Andersen (can you tell I like depressing
artwork?),
this is my favorite Disney movie. Ariel is just cool, ok?
8.Heathers
*Winona Ryder. Christian Slater. Enough said.
9.Man in the Iron Mask
*NOT because of Leonardo DiCaprio, and not because of anything other
than
Gerard Depardieu's stellar performance as an aging Porthos.
10.Good Will Hunting
*Not just because I worship Robin Williams. Not just because Matt
Damon is
excellent. But mainly because I could feel for the characters, again,
some
parallels with my own life made it uncomfortable to watch, but worth it,
definitely worth it.
Yes, I know most of my favorites are from the Eighties and Nineties, but
that's just because that's what I've most been exposed to. And,
because of
their themes, they are the ones that most resonate with me.
My list of the next ten would go like this (Again in no particular
order)
11.Lady Jane
*Helena Bonham Carter in the tragic tale of the 9-day Queen of England.
12.Anne of the Thousand Days
*I'm a sucker for well-acted Tudor tales!
13.Gone With the Wind
*The visuals are so intense, especially for the time
14.King Creole
*Much better than the book on which it was based.
15.Viva Las Vegas
*A funny, feel-good romp.
16.The Rose
*Bette Midler's portrayal of an unlikable rock star based on Janis
Joplin
was a tour de force.
17.Bugsy Malone
*This was just really cute. Kids doing a gangster movie.
18.Cat Ballou
*ANother funny one, Jane Fonda as an outlaw. Wonderful when in a bad
mood.
19.Valley of the Dolls
*Wonderfully camp.
20.The Breakfast Club
*Best teen-angst movie of all time.

Here's my input...can't ever really come up with a concise list...and I
feel
like my list changes a lot, although there are always some that stick
forever...but here are some of my favorite films:
Heavenly Creatures
Howards End, A Room with a View
Safe
The Sweet Hereafter
A Little Romance
The Ice Storm
The Piano, An Angel at my Table, The Portrait of a Lady
Hannah and Her Sisters, Husbands and Wives, Sleeper
Impromptu
Fargo
Nashville, Short Cuts
Rebecca
Places in the Heart
And probably some rather significant others that escape me now...:)

Alright, a perfect excuse for me to tell everybody what my
favorite movies are! I think you can learn alot about a person from
their movie preferences, so I'm eager to hear from more creatures, and
I'm very glad to share mine. Whee. Here I go.
My all-time favorite movie is "Akira" (1988). Bonus points to
anyone who's heard of it, much less seen it. (Except Jean, I have a
feeling you might know this one.) It's doubly obscure due to the fact
that it's Japanese and it's animated.
Next, I have a few movies that I also feel are on a plateau
above all the other movies I've seen. They seem as perfect as a movie
can get. In a somewhat particular order, these are:
"Heavenly Creatures" (1994)
"Star Wars" (1977)
"Apocalypse Now" (1979)
"Taxi Driver" (1976)
"A Clockwork Orange" (1971)
"Wings of Honneamise" (1987) (This is also Japanese animation)
"Full Metal Jacket" (1987)
"Goodfellas" (1990)
"Schindler's List" (1993)
And finally, some honorable mentions, which I love to pieces,
but aren't quite flawless in my eyes.
"Clerks", "Brazil", "The Shawshank Redemption", "2001: A Space
Odyssey, "Grave of the Fireflies" (yet another Japanese animation
flick), "Reservoir Dogs", "Terminator 2", "Back to the Future",
"Titanic", and of course, various Hitchcock movies such as: "Vertigo",
"Psycho", and "Rear Window".
I encourage everyone who reads this to go out and see any of
these movies that you haven't seen before. (But if you try to get
ahold of the Japanese movies, make sure they're subtitled, not dubbed.
Trust me on this one.)
Thanks for letting me ramble,
Kip
p.s. I don't think I've really introduced myself very well to the list
before. Really quick: My name is Kip, I'm a 20 year old guy living in
Iowa, (which is a state in the U.S. in case you didn't know), I'm
studying Engineering in college right now, and I like parenthesis.

As for all of the ones you hated Orson, i agree with them except Pretty

that, although I understand your opinion, I could tell you what the
story
means, but I do not want to get you started as you said. Anyway it is
probably meant to be a chick flick, where girls get it and guys do not.

Even then, the fashions of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE were extensions of
Sixties
fashion to extremes it never reached. It was future fashion when it was
made. If you look at Alex's mum you'll see her hair is dyed funny. I'd
swear she was a late 70s punk who's reached middle age. It's as if this
movie foresaw the 90s with its exaggerated 60s feel.
In this age of overprescribing Ritalin to schoolchildren, the metaphore
of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE has more weight today than ever. Burgess and
Kubrick definitely had a vision of things to come.

then began stalking repertory houses and discovered a whole new world:
"old" movies.
Mind you, I was already inclined to like old flicks but my faves were
all
special effects movies at 15.

Nice to see someone has actually seen the film and doesn't just have a

I see too many people with Marilyn Monroe and James Dean posters who

speaking of Prof. Higgins *VBG* I love MY FAIR LADY because of Audrey

I was watching one of my faves as a kid earlier tonight. It was "20,000

At

I think I can top you on this. My all-time favorite anime films
are
all done by Hayao Miyazaki. His studio puts out masterpieces like
Porco Rosso (Crimson Pig), Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro),
Laputa, Kiki's Delivery Service, Nausicaa (his most famous and not
his best work, IMHO) and MANY MANY others. I watched Akira and I
loved it (of course). But in terms of plot, character
development,
excellent animation, I haven't seen ANYTHING that comes close to
Hayao Miyazaki. =) I'm a HUGE Otaku (double bonus points to
whomever knows what an otaku is) and one of the few female hentais
out there (triple to those who know what hentais are.. <grin>).

get
> ahold of the Japanese movies, make sure they're subtitled, not
dubbed.
> Trust me on this one.)
The best non-subtitled (dubbed) animated film I've seen is
"Castle of
Cagliostro" (one of Hayao Miyazaki's early works) and I have to
say
the DUB is much better than the SUB. The character voices are far
more interesting and the words aren't a direct translation from
the
Japanese but they do a really good job capturing the essense of
the
Japanese and making it even funnier than the original (IMHO).
Speaking of subtitled movies, I would recommend these three
Japanese
films: Tampopo (An AMAZING movie. Hilariously funny, sad,
intriguing, shocking, amazing film.), A Taxing Woman (about a
Japanese tax collector), and Minbo (about a lawyer that
specializes
in Japanese Yakuza prosecution.). All three films are directed by
Juzo Itami who is an AMAZING director. I've loved everything I've
seen of his (except for The Funeral.. I just didn't get the humor
in
that one since I don't know a lot about traditional Japanese
funerals). All three star Nobuko Miyamoto, Juzo Itami's wife,
who is
an amazing actress.
That's enough ranting and raving for now. =)

I have to say, I, too, prefer the dubs to the subtitles, because the
dubs
usually make more sense than the subtitles (the subs seem to be literal
translations, as opposed to what you were saying about capturing the
essence.)

Hi Creatures! (Hello to the new people! Welcome! *waving*)
Well, since everyone is listing their favorite movies I have decided to
=
list a few of mine! These are in no particular order, I am just
listing =
them as they come to me:
1)Heavenly Creatures (well duh...*G*)
2.)Dune (though it coulda been done better, but it was cool)
3)Fried Green Tomatoes
4)Titanic (this'd be a great movie even if Kate wasn't in it)
5)The Scream Movies
6)The Mirror Has Two Faces (Barbra Streisand, excellent actress)
7) Gone With the Wind=20
8) any Veronica Lake movie (I love older movies)
9) To Die For (the book is also excellent by the way..oh, who wrote it?
=
can't recall)
10) Noises Off
11) Frankie and Johnny (with Michelle Pfeiffer)
12) Dances with Wolves
13) Mars Attacks
14) Thelma and Louise
Uh, I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of any off the top of my =
head...i'm sure I will later. But I have a wide variety of favorite =
movies. An ecclectic taste I guess you'd call it *G*. I love all =
sorts, I even love the really "bad" B movies, b/w, box office hits, box
=
office duds, sleepers, horror, drama, foreign (with subtitles of =
course). =20

More on anime!

Define weird. =)
I thought it was a excellent piece. The physics is CORRECT
(which is
something that only a few animators really do well). For favorite
Miyazaki film, it's a three-way tie between Porco Rosso, Castle of
Cagliostro, and Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro) where the
depiction of young girls is amazingly accurate.
Have you seen it "on a big screen" instead of on tape? It's not
as
impressive on tape because you can't see details. There is one
scene
where Porco is speaking to the young girl (who is in the distance)
and a telescope is between them and >her image is drawn in detail
in
the eyepiece<. You just don't get detail like that elsewhere.
There
is no repetition of cells in his work, which is more than can be
said
of most animators that rehash cells and repeated action (cheaper
way
of making animation).
> I'm not particularly a FAN of anime, but have quite a bit of it.

Ahh.. =) You like the general type of animation that most people
enjoy... plus, it seems that you like the titles that are mostly
available here in the US.
I was VERY lucky to live in a place that had a huge animation
selection... plus, I was very active in the Japanese Animation
Club
at the University. Dominion: Tank Police is okay but of Masamune
Shirow's work, I liked Black Magic M-66 better (which isn't as
well
animated as Ghost in the Shell, but is a bit more cohesive in
plot).
I have the first few Tenchi Muyo episodes on laserdisk, but I'm
generally not impressed with the series. I have the manga for
Ranma
1/2 but I disliked the tv series (the animation is awful), the
OVAs
are bearable, but I hate the english dubs. DBZ is okay. I prefer
things a bit darker than that (although not too dark). I
definitely
don't fit the typical female anime fan because of the titles that
I
do like. I despise Kimagure Orange Road, a staple of female
fandom
here in the US (it is so poorly animated, I will wince at some
scenes, sorry to all KOR fans out there... the OVAs are
semi-redeeming, but they are poorer quality than I expect of an
OVA).
> IIRC, Otaku means fan, and hentai....aren't those
the....ahem...."adult"
> titles? (grin)
I would wholly recommend F3, although the animation leaves much
to be
desired (atleast it's not Crayon Shin Chan!). Dragon Half is very
good too, if you're looking for something very comedic (I laughed
harder watching this than any Tenchi, Maison Ikkoku, or Ranma
episode). The Slayers which is also good and highly recommended.
> I have to say, I, too, prefer the dubs to the subtitles, because
the

Correction: I do NOT prefer the dubs to the subtitles. I prefer
subtitles because the Japanese voices are so much better than the
English
ones. Not to slam american voice actors but, the japanese voice actors
have the same fame and recognition as non-animated actors have here...
and
rightly so because they are VERY good over their english counterparts.
They inflect their voice better than many of the english voice actors do
(IMHO). If the subtitles are a little funny, I can always figure it
out a
bit. Subtitles and dubs also depend on the translator. A friend of
mine
from school, Dave Flemming, did the subtitles for Patlabor II and they
are
excellent. I've heard dubs that are terrible (especially after
watching a
subtitled version of the same show). An example of this (hiding) is
Akira.
The sub for Akira is, IMHO, so much better in quality than the dub.

An otaku is an obsessed fan or nerd. It's not as bad a term as people =
think . It refers to the excessive politeness of "fan-boys".
I'm a big otaku myself but mostly of tokosatsu (special photography), =
daikaiju (giant monster) and sentai (superhero) stuff.

Grin indeed. Doesn't hentai refer to pornographic anim=E9? ;-)
Myazaki is a genius. Disney video will be releasing Kiki's delivery =
service soon. They have strcuk a deal to dsitribute all of Myazaki's =
stuff in the US.
My personal favorite in OVAs (Original Video Animations) is "Giant =

Heavenly Creatures
Hard Boiled
Toy Story
The Frightners
Nakita
Leon
City of the Lost children.
etc...etc..etc...
now compare this to my ex's taste.....
Dirty Dancing
Ghost
Anything with Brad Pitt !
Anything with Tom Cruise !
The sound of Music
as you can see, renting films can be quite fraught. I usally let her

P.S. Jean, you seem to know more about my Great Uncle Peter than I do. I

particular order of course.
1)The English Patient
2)The Sweet Hereafter

10)Jude
11)Gallipoli
12)Men Don't Leave
13)Oscar and Lucinda
14)The Horse Whisperer
15)The Man Who Broke a Thousand Chains
16)The Tenth Man
17)A River Runs Through It
18)The Natural
19)Jane Eyre
20)Wuthering Heights

this...I'd be interested in feedback.

I am a big fan of Japanimation! Did you see "Ghost in the Shell"? "MD
Geist"? "Demon City Shinjuku?" There's so many really good ones.
Actually,
Disney's new movie "Mulan" is based on a fairly recent Japanese animated
movie.
It would be really hard for me to come up with just 100 movies that I
like
the best, but they would range from "Metropolis" (an old silent Fritz
Lang
movie) all the way up to some of the most current movies. I'd have to
give
it some hard thought . . .

In my case, weird is the same person who likes HC also really enjoying
Grease 2. Sometimes I love movies that I know are really horrible, and
don't like ones that I can admire in a technical sense.

No, all the anime I've seen has been tapes or LD. And I do realize that
might make a difference, because I *blush* loved THE LION KING (Go,
Kimba...grin) when I saw it in the theatre, but it was really lacking
when I
viewing the video.

True, I do like the mainstream stuff when it comes to anime, which is
funny,
because that's about the exact opposite of what I enjoy when it comes to
other movies. Plus I like the ones that make me laugh.....comedies much
more than the more.....outre stuff.
But at least I'm not a fan of Sailor Moon (grin)

I just adore Ryo-ohki, and the full-length movie (Tenchi in Love) was
kind
of cool.

I will bear your recommendations in mind. My husband will be pleased
that I
am the one heading for the anime section of the Mokuteki instead of
him....smile

Oh I get where you're coming from, and didn't mean to impugn the voice
actors. But I have seen a lot of crappily subtitled stuff. Plus, I
don't
speak any Japanese, so I'm not very good at figuring out what's going on
from what I hear.

Not to mention that "The Lion King" is adapted from (but not credited
to)
Tezuka's (The creator of Astroboy) "Jungle Emperor", That book gave us
the animated series "Kimba, The White Lion" (shown in the US) telling
the
stories of Kimba as a lion cub as well as "King Leo" (shown in Europe
and
French-Canada) which continued the saga into his young adulthood.
Kimba's pals were a bird and a baboon.
The villain was a lion with a cataract-clouded eye which commanded a
horde of hyenas.
Hmmmmmmmm.

OK, time for me to try and respond to all the good Anime posts that
have
been going on lately. I get this in digest form, so allow me to try to
catch up.
1) >Marie Braden wrote this about 'Akira':"Hardly obscure, it's only
>like the most widely-known piece of anime outside of Japan."
Ok, yes, in terms of Anime, it's not obscure at all, but i meant on the
grand scale.
2)Alot of people have mentioned Hayao Miyazaki, and yes, I agree,
'Castle
of Cagliostro' and 'Totoro' are awesome. I haven't seen Porco Rosso
though.
3)I get double and triple bonus points since I know what 'Otaku' and
'Hentai' mean. =)
4) >Eileene Coscolluela wrote: "The best non-subtitled (dubbed)
>animated film I've seen is "Castle of Cagliostro" (one of Hayao
>Miyazaki's early works) and I have to say the DUB is much better
>than the SUB."
I agree. Dubbing seems to generally be decent in humorous titles, but
i
don't usually like it in serious movies.
5) >Eileene Coscolluela also wrote: "An example of this is Akira.
>The sub for Akira is, IMHO, so much better in quality than the
>dub."
Very true. When Jean mentioned "Films i hate with venomous passion, I
tried to think of any movies i felt that strongly about, and one came
to
mind. The dubbed version of 'Akira' (this makes it my favorite and
least
favorite movie, wow!). The goofy actors completely ruin the serious
atmosphere of the story. And dont' forget that in 'Akira', the
characters mouths are animated to match the Japanese dialog, which is
pretty rare in Anime. In the dubbed version, all this extra work by
the
animators is wasted.
6) >Kelly and Linda Wiggins wrote: "I am a big fan of Japanimation!
>Did you see "Ghost in the Shell"? "MD Geist"? "Demon City
>Shinjuku?"...
I have Ghost in the Shell, but I haven't seen the others. I'm a big
anime fan, but i mostly prefer the feature films and some OAV's, but
not
TV series.
7) >Jean wrote: "Not to mention that "The Lion King" is adapted
>from (but not credited to) Tezuka's "Jungle Emperor"
I remember hearing once that there was a cartoon lion predating Kimba
(Jungle Emperor), of which it seemed to be a take-off of. Anyone know
what i'm talking about, i can't remember anything else about it.
Ok, I think that will be enough anime-talk from me for now.
Later,
Kip

Exactly. Do you own the dvd? It has a running commentary track with
both directors, gina and jennifer and the mighty joe pantoliano. It's
very funny, and you learn a lot about how this film was made. I
believe the budget was only $2m. Titanic anyone?
My favorite scene is with the telephone ringing in the other room,
very creepy. The part where the camera tracks the telephone wire is
also quite brilliant. And what about jennifer's scene in the elevator
at the end of the film?
Oh yeah, and the dvd is the unrated version, with more intense love
scenes, and you really get to see that one guy's finger being clipped
off! Oh boy.
Talking about commentary tracks, did anybody here listen to the
director's commentary on the FREEWAY disc? I tell you, this guy is
really sick. Brilliant director though :)

About japanimation, i bought the GHOST IN THE SHELL dvd a while ago,
still have to watch it. But, what i wanted to ask you anime experts,
is this title any good compared to the other stuff you talked about?
I'm also looking for some more titles to start building a nice anime
collection, so fire away.
And yes, i love reading about all your favorite films, i'm already
compiling a list of must-see titles from those lists.
BTW somebody mentioned CLUELESS in his/her favorites list. I love
that film, it's a true classic. I also forgot to mention that i adore
all those crappy 80's john hughes flicks, like THE BREAKFAST CLUB, and
PRETTY IN PINK (also starring gina gershon from BOUND btw). Anyway i
know those movies suck, but i just like to watch them every once in a
while.

Thanks, sort off :\
You know, i have received quite a lot of private emails from people on
this list who also love NBK. Time to come out of the closet people,
together we'll stand strong against the most hideous critic alive!

OK, I´d like to add my favorite movies as well (not ordered):
Rosemarie´s Baby ( forget "The Exorcist"! )
The Graduate (I love the soundtrack)
The last Unicorn (I always have to cry in the end)
Woman in white (0f 1949, I think)
Muriel´s marriage (the reason why I love ABBA-songs ;c) )
The piano
The great Dictator (by Charles Chaplin)
Leon- the Professional (I love this movie soooo much)
Excalibur
The Commitmants
Knocking on heaven´s door (it´s a German movie but really funny)
That´s all I can think of at the moment. There are so many brilliant
movies, but I can´t remember the names...

I'm just pulling your leg. I knew I'd get a rise out of ya! : )
You'll be pleased to know it's been reported that OS was seen yakking
with Leo DC at an LA eatery until closing time last week. It seems they
were discussing "American Psycho".

If this was the sixties, you'd be making chains out of foil cigarette
pack liners because that wuld mean a seeing-eye dog for someone.
These chains letters usually exploit either greed or generosity: it
either states your forwarding will result in a donation (designed to
bring tears to your eyes) or a hefty cheque for you.
There was one just a few weeks ago from Bill Gates "testing a program
which tracks forwarding and was going to reward all those in the chain
with $1000".
Legit posts for help usually refer to a website where contributions can
be made. Any e-mail asking to pile on signatures is merely a clutter
device and sabotage: eventually the letter becomes too big and crashes
servers.
It's just spam.

This line is known as "the kicker". It conjures up a feeling about
ourselves we don't want- so we act.
It's also a classic indication that a prank or a fraud has been
perpetrated.
No legit "charity" letter ever pre-insults a potential contributor.
This is just typical "Urban Legend", "Oral tradition" and "Rumor"
mechanism in action, adapted for the relatively new medium of internet.
