RADIO PREMIUM DECODERS & OTHER GOODIES
1. Buck Rogers Solar Scouts Member Badge - 1936 - This is a really beautiful brass badge, issued as a Cream of Wheat premium, and is one of those radio premiums that could be a piece of jewelry.
2. Captain Midnight Mysto-Magic Weather Forecasting Flight Wings Badge - 1939 - a mouthful, but a great radio premium from Skelly Oil Company. In a nice, complete example like this one, there is a small piece of litmus paper (remember that from chemistry class, kids?) which was supposed to foretell a change in weather for all of us daring flyers.
3. Radio Orphan Annie - 1937 -Silver Star Member Secret Message Ring - you needed to use the 1937 decoder to get the secret message on the top of this ring. How cool! Save more boxtops, kids!
4. Captain Midnight Mirro-Magic Code-O-Graph, 1948. This brass and plastic badge was not only used to code & decode messages, but also to flash messages in daylight using the small mirror in the center of the red plastic on the rear of the decoder. Unfortunately the red plastic back piece is nearly always warped (if it's not missing altogether). A large piece, and still one of the more popular decoders in spite of the poor plastic used for the rear piece.
5. Captain Video Secret Seal Ring, 1951. A scarce premium from the most popular show on the Dumont TV Network, this is a beautiful gold colored brass ring, designed to emboss CV initials on paper. The ring pictures a small rocketship and 3 stars as well.
6. Helen Trent Radio Replica Brass Badge, 1949. A scarce brass radio premium from a daytime soap opera which was on CBS from 1933 to 1960. Loosen the imitation ruby "dial" and turn the wheel in back to view five cast members, including Helen Trent.
7. Captain Midnight 1947 Decoder. This is the only all-plastic decoder in the Captain Midnight series. It's a blue whistle, marked "Captain Midnight S.S. 1947" on one side, with a red decoder dial on the other side. It's a great collectible today, but a bit of a letdown for the fans who were used to great brass decoders.
8. Sky King - 1947 - Secret Signalscope. This action item had a scope to spot enemy aircraft in your neighborhood; a whistle inside the scope to be used for calling Sky King; and a magnifier to view secret messages.
9. Frank Buck Explorer's Sun Watch - 1949. A popular item from Wheaties, this Jack Armstrong premium is quite nice. There's a glow-in-the-dark face, with the Frank Buck signature (signature not on all models), the sundial, and a compass all in a brass base.
10. Radio Orphan Annie's Secret Society 1936 brass decoder badge and the manual. The manuals are more difficult to find in decent condition than are the decoder badges.
