Buying Guide

The following general rules apply to all gemstones:

• Color is the most important factor. Vivid,saturated colors are more highly prized than dull grayish colors. In general,within each gemstone variety,a clear medium to medium dark very intense color is the most preferred. The exception to the rule is truly colorless diamonds that are valued more than those with pale colors.
• The next most important factor affecting value is clarity,with clear transparent gemstones with no visible inclusions being the most valued. Some gemstone varieties are very rare without inclusions of some kind so the price structure takes this into account.
• Well cut stones of good symmetry and fine polish are more valuable than poorly cut stones. If the stone is too deep and narrow,areas will be dark. If it is too shallow and wide,parts of the stone will be washed out and lifeless.
• Gemstones are sold by weight. The price will be per carat. Generally,large gemstones are more rare,so the price per carat is higher.
• Always buy your gems from a good gemologist or reputable jeweler whom you can trust. Never buy anything based on unsolicited telephone calls. Ignorance can be very expensive if you are not dealing with someone you can trust.
• If you are buying gems as an investment,always buy the best stone you can afford. High quality stones are more likely to increase in value or at least hold their value. Buyers can find poor quality stones most anywhere.
• If you are buying a gem to be used in jewelery,it is best to buy a standard size. Standard sizes are less expensive to mount than non-standard.
