Sovereign Assurance Pipe Band History

The band was formally set up in August 1992.

Kerry Ballantyne and Warren Ross floated the idea of a band that was different amongst musicians who had retired from competition bands or were members of other bands looking for something a little different. A few of the band's founding members are today still playing members of other bands.

The band was incorporated as the "City of Sails Pipe Band" and attended it’s first competition at the Tauranga Square Day in August 1993 where members paraded in a variety of kilts, many of which were loaned to the band by the defunct Kaikohe Pipe Band.

After a short period of operation we were extremely lucky to secure sponsorship from Sovereign Assurance, a Life Assurance company that is based on Auckland's North Shore.

The band undertook many parades and fundraising events and when attending the Cambridge contest in 1993 they proudly paraded in their new Red Gordon Kilts.

The band has competed at four New Zealand Championships and won the grade 4 championship in 1995.

The band has travelled to Australia, the United States of American and Canada. The Band intends to compete at the New Zealand Championships in Timaru March 2001 and then Travel to U.S.A. and Canada in 2002.
