CNW and UP Pictures

(And various others)

The first picture is of a UP Executive passenger train stopping in Eagle Grove, IA while it was touring the new ribbon rail that was recently laid on the Jewel subdivision. This was taken in March 1998.

UP

The next picture was taken on the Boone & Scenic Valley RR excursion west of Boone, IA in June 1996. The B&SV RR is an excursion train that runs daily from Memorial day thru October. The engine here is a Chinese built Class JS steam locomotive. It was the last engine off the assembly line at the Datong Locomotive Works in China in 1989 before it was converted over to a deisel plant. It was delivered to the B&SV in Dec. 89 and began running in the spring of 1990.

Here is a picture of the UP SD40's that were painted for the Olympic Torch train. This picture was taken in the Eagle Grove, IA yard in Aug. 1996 after the locomotives had been put into regular service.
OLYMPIC

These pictures were also taken in Eagle Grove, IA of a UP track evaluation car that was used to inspect the new ribbon rail that was recently added from Eagle Grove south to the mainline in Ames, IA. The first picture was a night shot.
EVALUATION CAR

The first picture here is of the Kate Shelley bridge on the UP(former C&NW) mainline spanning the Des Moines river west of Boone, IA. This photo only shows the middle portion of the bridge and does not do it complete justice. The second picture is a view looking down the mainline toward the bridge from the east side.
BRIDGE

This photo shows a former Waterloo RR switch engine used by the AGP bean processing plant (Ag Processing) in Eagle Grove, IA for load-out switching operations.
SWITCHER

The next set of photos is comprised of three pictures of the ribbon rail and track laying equipment as it was coming into Eagle Grove, IA from the south. Shortly after aquiring the C&NW RR Union Pacific replaced the old joint rail with high speed ribbon rail south to the mainline in Ames, IA to help speed up operations.
RIBBON RAIL

This picture is an upper view of the UP line crossing the Des Moines river in Fort Dodge, IA. The former C&NW line was originally the Chicago Great Western line that was aquired by C&NW in the late 1960's. You can also see the Illinois Central RR line which crosses under the bridge. I also have a side shot of this same bridge in my B&W photo section. It was taken in the 1930's with a passenger steam train crossing it.
UP BRIDGE

Here is beautiful shot of Union Pacific #844. It is a 4-8-4 class steam engine that UP uses for excursions and promotional events. This picture was taken on the mainline between Boone and Ames, IA in Sept. 1996. #844 has the distinction of being the only currently operational steam engine that has never been put out of service since it was built.
UP #844

Here is two pictures of restored cabooses taken in the Boone & Scenic Valley RR yard in Boone.

This shot was taken of a westbound Chicago Central train in Webster City, IA in January 1998.

This picture is of Chicago Central GP-18 #8190.
CC #8190

These pictures were taken of a pair of Union Pacific SD40-2's, one still in former C&NW colors, crossing the old CGW line over the Des Moines river valley in Fort Dodge, IA on 11-07-97. The bottom picture was taken from the east end as the train exited the bridge. Below the bridge you can see the IC line that also runs through Fort Dodge.
UP SD40-2'S

This next series of pictures were taken by my brother-in-law of 5 Cedar Rapids & Iowa City Railway locomotives pulling a frieght train through Iowa City, IA in May '98.
