A country's official flag is undeniably a symbol of great national pride. Offending it is considered an insult to the people it symbolizes. However, aside from being a sacred emblem, a flag speaks a lot about the history and social make-up of the land where it originated. The Haitian flag is no different and like every other nation, Haitians reserve a special day to honor it. May 18 is our Flag Day. | |||||||||||||||||||

| In Haiti, Flag Day is a major national holiday celebrated with a televised parade and school marching band competition. Flag Day is also observed by Haitians abroad. In The United States for instance, Haitian nationals from all walks of life pay tribute to their flag by organizing various social events ranging from the annual parade in Miami, FL to the Franklin Park concert in Boston, MA. Most attendees, however, often come to enjoy the good food associated with the festivities without realizing the historical struggle that our ancestors endured in order to make such a wonderful day possible. Our flag's origin can be traced to two distinct historical timelines. First and foremost, it can be linked to our celebration of freedom. Unfortunately, it can also be attributed to the power struggle that has been haunting us for well over two hundred years, shortly after we earned our independance from France.
