A COUNTRY CALLED CZECHOSLOVAKIA
The country of Czechoslovakia was smaller than the state of New York, however, it had hundreds of glass and china factories. In 1993,Czechoslovakia became a free country. It was then divided into two independent states. One was called the Czech Republic and the other was called the Slovak Republic.
When Czechoslovakia was created in 1918, the products that it produced were quite beautiful and unique. The quality was superb with beautiful coloring and design. The Czech products became easily identified.
Many Czech products were exported to the United States from 1918 to 1938. These items are easily identified because of the markings found on the product "Made in Czechoslovakia." One item of special interest to me is the WALL POCKETS with Birds made by Czech's.
Wall pockets were introduced during the Victorian era. They were used to hide things out of sight. They were made of yarn, cloth, lace, cardboard, wood, wicker, and many other materials. The things they wanted to hide out of sight were papers, gloves, scarves, combs, slippers, and other items.
The Victorian women were very fond of outdoor plants and nature. They needed something to bring nature indoors, so they could enjoy it all year around. This may have led to the development and manufacturing of decorative containers. These containers were designed in porcelian and glass especially to allow plants to become indoor decorations for the walls. Ivy or any type of hanging plant was used. Thus, the love of nature was brought indoors by the development of wall pockets.
Wall pockets have become a very collectable and popular decorative item with today's collector because they do not need much space nor do you need much money to collect them. I became very interested in collecting the Czechslovakian wall pockets because the country of Czechoslovakia was only in existence for 75 years. Therefore, Czech wall pockets have become more challenging to find and much more valuable.
