The best romantic composer

Gustav Mahler   1860-1911

An extremely talented man that proves what mankind is capable of, he was born in Kalischt, Bohemia,Czechoslovakia, from Jewish heritage. His music is lenghth, depth with painful emotions,  Mahler´s orchestral music is clear, complex and full of musical imagery, from the heavenly to the  banal yet he loved nature and life and was, of course a state of the art conductor aside from a master composer of the caliber of Beethoven!!!. He wrote basically symphonies and lieder cycles. Its last symphony is unfinished, however there are other versions from Deryck Cooke, Clinton Carpenter, Joseph Wheeler and Reno Mazzeti.

Mahler symphonies are absolutely atonishing and fantastic, he wrote 10 yet the most magnificent of them are the numbers one, second, third and of course the eigth " thousand". ( this symphony is a desecription of the entire universe with religion themes) Curiously, the author of this page feels that there exist quite many oriental sounds influence and instrumentation in the last part of this symphony, resembling somehow the sounds of Puccini´s Turandot. The use of incredible musical resources such as band and choruses give a tremendous impact on these symphonies. He exploited each instrument not merely for the clearest musical effect of which he was capable , but even more for its most striking emotional accents being the horn the instrument he probably was the greatest master of all times, the huge orchestration characteristics of its entire work represent the mayor difference from other Master composers. He was deeply influenced by famous composer Anton Bruckner yet Mahler´s output has far more musical resources and his symphonies are more complex yet of higher caliber.

The use of extensive human voice are also very outstanding and beautiful resources added to these simphonies that rivals the other master composers in the opera field such as Verdi and Mozart.

Although by all means all his simphonies are masterpieces just as the case of Beethoven or Brahms, we most particularly mention the second "Resurrection" and the eight " Thousand" as being the best representative of Mahler´s enormeous talent, of course the very " jewish" charachter of the number one " Titan" makes it a favorite in the concert stage. The Resurrection first movement is full of anger and state of the art bass section at the very begining  and passion with tremendous force just like the case of Beethoven!!!!  Mahler Symphony No. 3 has  tremendous orchestartion levels and a sense of perfection and a beautiful last movement and a glorius march at the end of the first movement.

In spite of the fact that almost all mayor conductors have recorded all Mahler´s work, such as Solti and Hornstein, it is our desire to mention the names of Leonard Bernstein and Klauss Tennstedt as being extremely talented conducting these magnificence works and therefore they do receive a special credit. There is a VHS by Tennstedt that the author feels everybody must have it. Unfortunately, they all have passed away and our hope at present seems to be Esa Pekka Salonen, he has done a very interesting and enthusiast third symphony.

We encourage the record companies and particularly the new and scarce format, the DVD  to come up with more and new versions of Mahler works and contribute therefore to the promotion of one of the greatest master composer that ever lived.

This page is made in Cholula, Puebla., Mexico        as a modest tribute to Mahler, Bernstein and Tennstedt.
