I was just looking at the Jan 5, 1900 Advocate at the Robbins Library. There was no major info about the change of the century. There was a brief article, possibly an editorial, discussing if 1901 or 1900 was the beginning of the new century.
The first news item of the year was - "The WW will hold its food sale on Saturday January 6 in the vestry of the Universalist Church from 2 to 5, pm."
The 2nd news item was - "Miss Laurie Davis entertained her cousin, Miss Davis from Deering (a suburb of Portland (Maine-ed)) over the Xmas holidays."
Also - The First Natl Bank of Arl will hold its annual stockholders meeting on Jan 9 at 4PM.
Prior to the Jan 5 paper is a special holiday supplement with several panoramic views of Arlington - looking west from the Center, and looking towards Spy Pond from Kensington Hill.
The Dec 29 paper had a story about a ton of iron that was stolen in Arlington. Officer Duffy traced the iron to a store in East Cambridge and 2 men (1 from Somerville) were arrested. The Jan 5 paper reports that both men were sentenced to 2 months in jail. (probably took them 2 months to heal their backs after that caper anyhow)
The Jan 5 paper also had a story about a man who was thrown into the street when his horse got spooked. A police officer took the man to the police station where he was treated before being sent home by train. The horse was later recovered in good shape.
Can't forget Cleveland Street - 2 youths saw some rubbish burning and thought that a garage was on fire. They pulled the fire box but the FD was not needed in spite of their speedy response. (No info as to how the rubbish got lit :-)
