Colours: Their Meanings and Uses


BLACK- The colour black absorbs all energy. Black is often associated with negativity, although black is not necessarily a negative colour. Many witches choose to incorportate black during rituals to help the flow of energy. Black is useful for getting rid of negative energies and purifying.

WHITE- The colour white is often associated with "goodness" in our society. White is very useful for purification and dedications. White is "scientifically" all colours combined, therefore, the colour white can be used in place of another colour (if necessary). As well, using white is an easy way to incorportate all colours... White is a very useful colour.

RED- Red is often associated with love, reason probably being that the colour red is a source of passion and energy (Passion and energy being not only positive things, but also negative, such as anger and malice). The colour red is a "balancing" colour. It is equally a part of "good" and evil", "life" and "death", and "power" and "weakness". The element of Fire is often attracted to, and represented by red.

ORANGE- Orange is an "attractive" colour, it's good for attracting emotions and elements, as well as physically attracting attention.

YELLOW- Yellow is associated with happiness. The colour yellow has it's place in many Spring rituals. Yellow is the colour of intelligence, accuracy, open-mindedness, eagerness, and spirituality. Yellow is the colour of the sun, and The Goddess is often represented by the colour yellow. The element of Air is often attracted to, and represented by yellow.

GREEN- Green is the colour of fertility. It often symbolizes youth, life, and growth. Green is often associated with success, prosperity, normality, and activity. The element of Earth is often attracted to, and represented my green.

BLUE- Blue is the colour of peacefullness, happiness, contentment, and success. The element of Water is often attracted to, and represented by the colour Blue. Light Blue is often used is healing and has both "air" and "water" qualities. Light Blue is also the colour of the sky on normal days, therefore; this colour has an "enveloping," closing aspect to it. Deep Blue is often used for protection purposes, and has a very penetrating quality.

VIOLET/PURPLE- Purple is the colour of power and highness. Purple is often used for healing, and even moreso than deep blue, has a very penetrating quality. Purple combines spirituality, power, calmness, and contentment. Purple is also the colour of nobility.

BROWN- Brown is often associated with wholeness and life. Brown is also sometimes associated with animals and the outdoors. Brown sometimes radiates awareness and tension.

TURQUOISE/TEAL- Colours in this range are often associated with good intentions. These colours are used to bring about good feelings and emotions. These are peacefull shades, often giving the feelings of contentment, profundity, and security.

PINK- Pink is often associated with innocence. Pink is the colour of friendship and kindness, and is often a calm and soothing colour. Pink is also the colour of fragrance and youth.

MAGENTA- Magenta is a very senior colour. Things associated with Magenta are intelligence, wiseness, weakness/helplessness, hope, the passing on of knowledge or being, and achievement.

These are only my interpretations of colour. It is always important that you use YOUR OWN interpretations, associations, and feelings, and use the things that work for you... I, in no way, believe that these are the only feelings and uses for these colours.
