Patricia (Patsy) Anne McGee was born at Letterman
General Hospital in San Francisco, California, on May 26, 1951. She
was born to Hubert (Jim) McGee, Jr. and her mother, Beverly Jean Clark
McGee. Patsy was the first of three daughters. She was named
after her mother’s sister, Patricia Anne Clark (Tricia), who died when
she was fifteen because of a heart problem. Patsy’s father was in
the Army at the time of her birth. During the next one and a half
years, they moved to Oklahoma, Alabama, and then returned to San Francisco
where her sister, Constance (Connie) Jean McGee, was born in January of
1953, in the same hospital. Since their father was in the Korean
War, Patsy, Connie, and their mother, moved to Elizabeth City, North Carolina,
and lived with their grandparents, Hubert and Jean McGee.
In January of 1954, the family moved to Greenville,
North Carolina, where her father attended East Carolina University and
was a police officer. Patsy’s youngest sister, Susan Beverly McGee,
was born at Pitt Memorial Hospital in October of 1956. In 1957, they
moved to New Bern, North Carolina, where Jim was a math teacher and also
coached wrestling and football. Patsy started school in the first grade
in New Bern. Over the next five years, they moved to Roanoke and
Vinton, Virginia.
When Patsy was in the sixth grade, her father joined the FBI. Over the next five years, they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, Moneterey, California, New York City, and San Juan. Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Living in Puerto Rico, she played the flute and piccolo in the school band and was also on the swim team.
In 1967, Jim started working at Harvey Alumina on the island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. Patsy spent her junior and senior years there and graduated Valedictorian, from St. Dunstan's Episcopal School in June of 1969. During high school, Patsy received a National Foundation Scholarship to study math and science at Southern Illinois University one summer. She also took college courses at the College of the Virgin Islands during her senior year. For the next two years, she studied math at Carnegie-Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1971, she started LPN school in Hendersonville, North Carolina. In October, she married Joseph George Young. In 1972, Patsy graduated from the LPN program. Joe was in the Navy and stationed in Bainbridge, Maryland, at that time. After Patsy graduated, she joined Joe in Maryland and a few months later they moved to Springfield, Massachusetts.
In 1973, Patsy and Joe moved to Asheville, North Carolina, which was his hometown. She worked as a LPN in Coronary Care, and started an Associate Degree of Nursing program in 1974. They had a son, Fred Myerle Young, on August 27, 1975, and they divorced a year later. Patsy graduated from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute in December of 1976, and became a Registered Nurse.
In 1977, Patsy’s parents had moved from the Virgin Islands to Hawseville, Kentucky. In March of 1978, Patsy and Fred moved to Lexington, Kentucky, and shared an apartment with Patsy’s sister, Susan, who was attending the University of Kentucky at that time. Patsy married Joseph Norman Duguay, on March 31, 1979. Joe already had two children from a previous marriage, Corinne Leigh Duguay, sixteen and, Jeffrey Scott Duguay, fifteen at the time.
In June of 1981, the family moved to Evansville, Indiana. Corinne and Jeff moved with them and then graduated from high school a year later. Patsy started working at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Labor and Delivery. On November 28, 1983, she had a son, Matthew Paul Duguay. Patsy was active in the Cub Scouts and later the high school band club with Fred. She was also Advancements Chairman for Matt’s Boy Scouts. In 1993, Patsy decided to advance her nursing degree and started school at the University of Southern Indiana. During her time at USI, she maintained a 4.0 GPA, was inducted into the Golden Key National Honor Society, and was listed on the National Deans List. She received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing on May 9, 1998.
Patsy’s parents decided to retire to North Carolina in 1998. Since Patsy and her family were close to them, they also decided to move. Patsy was offered a job at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Labor and Delivery. On September 18, 1998, Patsy moved to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to start her job. Joe stayed in Indiana to sell the house and in January of 1999, he moved to Elizabeth City.
Even though Patsy moved frequently and attended
twelve different elementary and secondary schools during her first twelve
years of school, she stayed on top and came out with Valedictorian in high
school. She was a single mother at one time and worked through much
of her higher education. However, despite some ups and downs in life, she
continued to come up number one as a mother, a wife, a nurse, a daughter,
and as a citizen.
