Edward Andrew McGee was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on January 21, 1932. His parents were Hubert McGee, and Jean Morrison McGee. They had four sons, Hubert (Jim), Jr., born in 1928, Edward, and twins, Michael Burnett and Gerald Morrison, born in 1938. Edward’s father was in the Coast Guard at the time of his birth.
Edward went to Ponce de Leon High School in Carol Gables, Florida. There he played football there and graduated in 1949. He then went to San Mateo Junior Collage, graduating in 1950. Soon after graduation, Edward went in the Coast Guard Academy and graduated in 1954. For a year he was assigned to the antisubmarine warfare division of the Coast Guard, serving on a cutter.
In December of 1955 Edward married Carol Boyajain, who he met at the youth group of St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Carol Gables, Florida. Strangely enough, his older brother, Jim, met his wife in the same church youth group. Edward and his wife had three children: twins, Jeffery Andrew and William Edward born in 1956, and Peter Brant born in 1957.
In 1956, Edward went to the Navy Flight school
in Pensacola, Florida to learn to be a pilot. In 1957 he was stationed
in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and that is where he lived the rest
of his life. He died on February 11, 1958, in a plane crash while
flying for the United States Coast Guard. He was flying treasury agents
looking for illegal stills run by organized crime on the Texas – Louisiana
border when his plane crashed. In 1981, the Coast Guard base in Elizabeth
City named and dedicated a hall in Edward’s memory.
