There were railways before there were steam engines. These used horsedrawn wagons and often only to pull the empties back up to a mine or quarry. This one comes from the Stratford and Morton plateway.

The earliest railways were part of colleries, and one horsepower was one of these ponies, here seen this summer in the New Forest.

The use of horses to move railway vechiles lingered in England until about 1960.
